William Cottrell (Brugs) Kennedy
God has welcomed home another member of the “Greatest Generation.” William Cottrell (Brugs) Kennedy, Born August 14, 1922, in Tavares, Florida, died from this life on February 13, 2012, in Mount Dora, Florida.
Of his professional life, he was most proud of his 20-plus years of soldiering, first as a Marine in the Big War, then as an Army officer afterward, defending the rights and freedoms Americans enjoy and the rest of the world covets.
Of his personal life, nothing meant more to him than family. Reared in small-town Central Florida by loving parents (Walker “Lawyer Red” and Christine Kennedy), he embraced the values that make families strong, using those values to guide and influence his own family. In Honolulu, Hawaii, at the end of the war, he married Rhonda Simpson (of the Mount Dora founding family), a long-time, home-town girlfriend, beginning a formal relationship that lasted 61 years until her passing in 2006. That union begat three sons – Bill (born in Deland, Florida); Charlie (born in Nuremburg, Germany); and Jim (born in Monterey, California), each of whom started their own families, giving him six grandchildren and seven (to date) great-grandchildren.
Aside from the love he shared, he left a legacy of appreciation for all things natural (the mountains, the beach, camping, fishing, hunting), for the visual and performing arts (painting, photography, theatre, big band and jazz music), for history, and for the United States of America. Perhaps his most memorable characteristic was his sense of humor and innate ability to lead most everyone he met to as least smile, if not to laugh. Oh, and he was addicted to Ham radio, and he loved the Gators!
He is already sorely missed, but he has left us with a lifetime of great memories to cherish.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, 2012, at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in Mount Dora.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, FL 32778.
