He joined the military in 1941 and at the beginning of the “Battle of the Bulge” was transferred to the Infantry. He served in France and Germany and received an E. M. A. E. (European, African, Middle Eastern) Ribbon with a Bronze Star before returning to Civilian Life.
In 1953 he and his family relocated to Florida with enough wide experience to activate a new woodworking company, Gate City Millwork, Inc. His progress was so great, he sold his company in 1979 that included a new plant with 35,000 square feet with fifty skilled employees who manufactured quality woodwork for delivery through the State of Florida and occasionally to other parts of the world.
His wife, Marjorie Thise Clark predeceased Ed in 1998 after more than 54 years of marriage. He is survived by his current wife, Marie A. Clark, whom he married in July of 2007, one son, Jeri P. Clark, residing in Leesburg, FL, one daughter, Mari Donaghy, residing in Acton, ME, three grandchildren, Aaron Donaghy of New Castle, ME, Sara Tremblay of Acton, ME and Anne Cordero of Sanford, ME. He believed it was his obligation to give his talent to worthwhile projects and served as President of the Central Indiana Retail Lumber Dealers Association. He served on the board of Directors for the Lafayette Little Theatre. He was a member of the Architectural Woodwork Institute, a member of the Sales and Marketing Executives group of Fort Lauderdale, member of the Home Builders Association, President of St. Gregory’s Men’s Club, Plantation, FL, President of St. Vincent De Paul Society, Member of the Parish Council at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mount Dora; a Red Coat at Waterman Hospital; American Legion member and a member of the Elks Club for over 45 years.
His most gratifying project began in the early stage of his retirement. He believed in the motto “The road to daily happiness is not so far behind. It’s what we do for others that brings true peace of mind.” During those twenty-five years, he purchased homes, reconditioned them, and sold them quickly to young married couples to help them get a start in life. Although he never talked much about his actions, a quick review of these recorded transactions are learned he had nearly one hundred of these dealings.
