Sophie Saraceno, 82 Floral City

Sophie Mary Saraceno, 82, Floral City, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala.

She was born April 11, 1919, in Boston, Mass., to Stanley and Sophia Radzvin. She came to Florida in 1984 from Peabody, Mass.

She was Catholic.

Survivors include two sons, Philip A. Saraceno of Huntsville, Ala., and Michael S. Saraceno of Austin, Texas; four daughters, Barbara Weigold of Inverness, Mary Preisner of Glastonbury, Conn., Roberta DuBeshter of Rochester, N.Y., and Jean Jalbert Ross of Peabody, Mass.; one sister, Pauline Sergi of Cambridge, Mass., and St. Petersburg; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Samuel S. Saraceno, on June 29, 1998.

Fred Scarlett, 65 DuQuoin, Ill.

Fred W. Scarlett, 65, DuQuoin, Ill., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at his Florida home in Inverness.

He was born July 20, 1936, in West Frankfort, Ill., to Fred and Margaret (Brown) Scarlett.

Mr. Scarlett was a retired bank examiner. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, DuQuoin, Ill., past elder of the church, and auditor for First Lutheran Church, Inverness.

He was a member of the Elks, VFW and American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Kitty Scarlett of DuQuoin, Ill., and Inverness; two daughters, Shelley Schantz and her husband, Rob, of Inverness and Sherri Halstead and her husband, Neal, of Columbia, Mo.; brother, Don Scarlett of Pana, Ill.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Les and Donna McClure of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren, Sidney Schantz, Taylor Schantz, Tyler Schantz, Blake Halstead and Jacob Halstead; and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jean White.

Robert Schack, 82 Beverly Hills

Robert J. Schack, 82, Beverly Hills, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Inverness.

A native of East Orange, N.J., he came here from New York City, N.Y., 16 years ago.

Mr. Schack was a retired warehouse manager for a pharmaceutical company.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having been in the Battle of the Bulge. He was in the tank division. He loved fixing things and was an avid golfer. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Schack of Beverly Hills; son, Robert J. Schack II and his wife, Eileen, of Clifton, N.J.; daughter, Beverly Ann Nelson of Freehold, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Andrea and Ashley Schack of Clifton, N.J., and Kamron Nelson of Freehold, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Hospice of Citrus County, 3350 W. Audubon Park Path, Lecanto, FL, 34461.

Albert Tweedy, 73 Inverness

Albert L. Tweedy, 73, Inverness, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Inverness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio. He came to this area in 1994 from Montpelier, Vt.

Mr. Tweedy was a laborer for the city of Berlin, Vt. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 3, Montpelier, Vt.

Surviving are his son, Richard Tweedy of Montpelier, Vt.; daughter, Linda Davis of Bennington, Vt.; two grandchildren; and close friend, Betty May of Inverness.

Donald Whittemore, 67 Ocala

Donald H. Whittemore, 67, Ocala, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Palm Gardens, Ocala.

Born in Des Plaines, Ill., he came here seven years ago from the San Francisco Bay area.

He was retired from the U.S. Navy. He was retired from retail sales.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 399 in California, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and the Ocala Shrine Club, and On Top of the World RC Flyers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara S. Whittemore of Ocala; daughter, Cathy Cummings of Superior, Wash.; son-in-law, Shannon Cummings of Superior, Wash.; son, Thomas N.

Whittemore of Rochester, N.Y.; stepson, Walter R. Schmucker of Salina, Kan.; and daughter-in-law, Melanie Schmucker of Salina, Kan.

Jimmie Brunswick, 58 Crystal River

Jimmie H. Brunswick, 58, Crystal River died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001 at his home in Crystal River. He was born July 7, 1943, in Hickman, Ky., to William H. and Dorothy M. (Barr) Brunswick and came to this area 25 years ago from Anchorage, Alaska.

He was a carpenter and a commercial shrimper and an U.S. Army veteran. He was a Baptist.

His son, William Ray Brunswick, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Gail, of Crystal River; daughters, Lelia J. Morse of Inglis; Theresa L. Dyess of Bedford, Va. and Joy M. Brunswick of Crystal River; sisters, Betty J. Hickman of Union City, Tenn.; Linda Denney of Jacksonville and Dottie Teuton of Ocala; Seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons, Timothy and Jayme Rickett of Crystal River.

Geraldine Mandato, 81 Inverness

Geraldine Rose Mandato, 81, Inverness, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at her home.

Born April 19, 1920, in New York City, she came here in 1971 from Farmingdale, N.Y.

Mrs. Mandato was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, where she was active with the Catholic Womens Club.

Survivors include her husband, Albert E. Mandato; a son, Daniel, and his wife Geri Oliveri of West Palm Beach; a daughter, Kathleen and her husband Richard Krause of Shelter Island, N.Y.; three sisters, Alice Espinosa of Inverness, Lillian Doyle of Long Island, N.Y., and Dorothy Ogorman of Long Island, N.Y.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Daisy Violet McCallum, 83, Crystal River, died Monday Dec. 3, 2001, at Sevens Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River. She came here from Canada in 1987.

She was a retired nurse. She was a member of the Church of the Living God in Crystal River.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheril Williams of Crystal River and adopted granddaughter Vilma Miller of Jamaica, Monta Bay; the Williams and Bunch families, Harres E. Curtis, Agatha Curtis, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Smith and Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Watkins Sr.

Charlie Sandstrom, 80 Ocala

Charlie Sandstrom, 80, Ocala, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and came to the Ocala area in 1986 from East Meadow, N.Y. He served with the Army in World War II. He was a retired driver for United Parcel Service. He was a member of the Teamsters of Long Island, N.Y.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia Coloe, Centereach, N.Y.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death May 20, 1999, by his wife, Frances Sandstrom.

Marie Womble, 54 of Inverness, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Tampa General Hospital.

Survivors include her daughters, Tracy Hagen of Ohio, and Teresa O’Brien of Inverness; a son Jimmy D. Womble of Indiana; grandchildren, Abby Hagen, Amy Hagen, Kayla O’Brien, Sheldon O’Brien, sisters, Deannie Barr, Redo Reed and Polly Heavener and a brother Arnold Swanson. She will also be greatly missed by her ex-husband and friend Jim Womble.

Marguerite ‘Maggie’ Beach, 78 Homosassa

Marguerite “Maggie” I. Beach, 78, Homosassa, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.

Born in Detroit, Mich., she came here from Joppa, Mich., eight years ago.

She was a homemaker: was known for her talent in oil painting and took art classes. She enjoyed needlepoint, particularly “Pretty Pinch”. She enjoyed her work with ceramics and was an accomplished organist and played for family and friends at her home.

Mrs. Beach was a former member of Lakeview Baptist Church of Battle Creek, Mich. She was a member of the Michigan Club of Beverly Hills and past entertainment chairwoman; a volunteer at Seven Rivers Community Hospital, Crystal River; and a volunteer at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Ira E. Beach of Homosassa; one son, Daniel and his wife, Dee Cabbott, of Battle Creek, Mich.; four daughters, Kathy and her husband, Robert Vondran, of Northwood, Ohio, Susan and her husband, Lewis Ransbottom, of Schoolcraft, Mich., Gail Beach of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Diane Beach of Rockford, Mich.; a brother, Floyd Marsh of Bridgeport, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jackson of Defiance, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Vernon ‘Sonny’ Elbrecht, 83 Homosassa

Vernon “Sonny” Elbrecht, 83, Homosassa, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.

He was born July 10, 1918, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Alvin and Alma (Hoffmann) Elbrecht and came to Florida in 1953 from there.

He retired as vice president of K&K Insurance Company of Indianapolis. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and served in the Pacific.

He was an accomplished musician and was a life member of The Indianapolis Musicians Union. He remained active in the community and was a member of the Citrus Jazz Society. He was one of the early band directors at Crystal River High School, where he also taught mathematics. Mr. Elbrecht was a patron of The Citrus Community Concerts, a columnist for the Citrus County Chronicle and was a member of Seven Rivers Golf and Country Club. He was Protestant.

He is survived by his son, Mark Elbrecht of Fort Wayne, Ind.; his daughter, Linda Gates of Homosassa; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
