Frances Meehan, 70 Dunnellon

Frances J. Meehan, 70, Dunnellon, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Palm Gardens of Ocala.

A native of New York City, he came here in 1993 from Chantilly, Va.

He served in the U.S. Army for 39 years, reaching the title of Master Sergeant before his retirement.

He was later a staff officer with the Department of Defense. He also worked at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., before retiring to Dunnellon. He attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon.

Survivors include his sister, Mary A. Corey of Dunnellon. Fero Funeral Home, Dunnellon.

Leonarda Kvetkus, 80 Inverness

Leonarda Kvetkus, 80, Inverness, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Inverness.

She was a machine operator for Thomas & Betts, Elizabeth, N.J., before retiring.

She came here in 1980 from Elizabeth.

She was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Doksziei, Poland, to John Karoscik and Mary Gelenski.

She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Vacis Kvetkus of Inverness; son, Walter D. Chance of Toms River, N.J.; two stepsons, Auri Kvetkus of Belleville, N.J., and Aruna Kvetkus of Elizabeth, N.J.; three grandchildren, Dana Lyons of Phillipsburg, N.J., and Daniel and Crystal Chance, both of Toms River, N.J.; and four great-grandchildren.

Sidney Bascom, 94 Hernando

Sidney G. Bascom, 94, Hernando, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Woodland Terrace of Citrus County in Hernando.

He was born March 16, 1908, in Fair Haven, Vt., to Isabelle and Zenas P. Bascom.

He moved to Meadowcrest in Crystal River from Fort Lauderdale 15 years ago and to Hernando one year ago from Meadowcrest.

Mr. Bascom retired from the New York State Conservation Department after working as the district forester for 39 years and continued to work as a land surveyor for many years.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, poker, bowling, crossword puzzles and taking his favorite pal, “Friendly,” (Scottish terrier) for rides and ice cream.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bascom, in 1997.

He is survived by one son, David A. Bascom of Durham, Conn.; one daughter, Barbara B. Joseph of Citrus Hills, Hernando; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Brown Funeral Home & Crematory, Crystal River.

Everett Batchelder, 90 Inverness

Everett N. Batchelder, 90, Inverness, formerly of Hernando, died Monday, April 8, 2002, in Mariner Health Center of Inverness.

A native of South Hampton, N.H., he was born Dec. 26, 1911, to Floyd and Inez Batchelder. He came to Florida 24 years ago from Lebanon, N.H.

Mr. Batchelder was a retired maintenance engineer for Dartmouth College of Hanover, N.H.

Survivors include one son, Floyd Batchelder of Florence, Ky.; one daughter, Patricia MacDonald of Canaan, N.H.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Fillmore Caldwell, 86 Ocala

Fillmore E. Caldwell, 86, Ocala, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Ocala.

Mr. Caldwell came here in 1982 from his native St. Johnsbury, Vt. He was a retired radio operator for American Air Lines.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shriners. He organized the band called “The Little German Band.”

Survivors include his wife, Louise Caldwell of Ocala; son, Keith P. Caldwell of Dayton, Ohio; daughter, Ann I. Brown of Upper Arlington, Ohio; brother, Allen Caldwell of Memphis, Tenn.; sister, May Bonnett of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and four grandchildren.

Samuel Elliott, 77 Inverness

Samuel F. Elliott, 77, Inverness, died Sunday, April 7, 2002.

He was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Kendrick, Idaho.

He came here in 1995 from Alexandria, Va.

Mr. Elliott retired from the FAA as an electronics engineer. He was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran.

Mr. Elliott developed Instrument Landing System.

He was Protestant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Williamina May Stone Elliott, on Sept. 18, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucille Trulson of Inverness and Sandra Lee Elliott of Springfield, Va.; one grandson, Todd Elliott Payne of Silver Spring, Md.; and two great-grandchildren.

Helen Frey, 88 Beverly Hills

Helen E. Frey, 88, Beverly Hills, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Inverness.

Born Oct. 29, 1913, in New York City, to Emil and Mary Dehlinger, she came here in 1970 from Richmond Hill, Long Island, N.Y.

Mrs. Frey was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Parish, Beverly Hills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Frey, in 1995; and daughters, Helen Frey and Barbara Ann Frey, in 1986.

Survivors include three sons, Francis (Marion) Frey of Queens, N.Y., Robert (Delores) Frey of Clearwater and Richard (Laura) Frey of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Emil Dehlinger of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

William ‘Bill’ Halbritter, 72 Dunnellon

William “Bill” A. Halbritter, 72, Dunnellon, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Dunnellon.

He was born in East Syracuse, N.Y., and formerly resided in Clay and Canastota, N.Y. He came here from Winter Haven in 1986.

Mr. Halbritter was a retired brick mason and former business owner in Polk County.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, Post World War II Occupational Forces in Germany.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Citrus Springs, American Legion Post No. 8, Winter Haven, and Trowel Trades of Florida Union.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Joyce N. Halbritter of Dunnellon; three sons, William James Halbritter of Lakeland, Philip Joseph Halbritter of Richmond, Va., and John Francis Halbritter of Tallahassee; one daughter, Colleen Marie Halbritter of Dunnellon; one brother, Austin Halbritter of Salt Lake City, Utah; five sisters; one aunt; many nieces and nephews; and five grandchildren.

Louis Herchenroeder, 87 Homosassa

Louis Woodrow Herchenroeder, 87, Sugarmill Woods, Homosassa, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Herchenroeder was born Aug. 16, 1914, in Kansas City, Mo.

He came here 22 years ago from Buffalo, N.Y.

He retired as an advisory engineer from Westinghouse Electric Corp. after 40 years of service.

He was a member of AIEE and ASME.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, June R. Brueck Herchenroeder of Sugarmill Woods, Homosassa; one daughter, Lynne Clarke of Homosassa; one sister, Dorothy (Leslie) Rood of Atlantic Beach; and two grandchildren, J.T. McCormick and Jessica McCormick, both of Homosassa.

Norman Monty, 75 Crystal River

Norman G. Monty, 75, Crystal River, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River.

He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Lowell, Mass., to Arthur and Antoinette (Chaput) Monty.

He moved to the area 13 years ago from Dracut, Mass., where he was a diesel truck mechanic.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Judy Monty of Crystal River; daughter, Joy Dunn of Maryland; two brothers, Donald Monty of Salem, N.H., and Roland Monty of Dracut, Mass.; one sister, Jacqueline Cloutier of Lowell, Mass.; one grandson, Jason Dunn of Maryland; and a special adopted grandchild, Ashlynn Mechele Geib.

Caroline Mullarkey, 93 Crystal River

Caroline B. Mullarkey, 93, Crystal River, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.

She was born May 24, 1908, in Amsterdam, N.Y., to Catherine and Joseph Bush.

She moved here from Sarasota 20 years ago.

She was a computer operator for the state of New York. She was Catholic.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Mullarkey of Crystal River and William Mullarkey of Jupiter; one sister, Marian Wizomirski of Amsterdam, N.Y.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
