James Honea Jr., 81 Homosassa

James L. Honea Jr., 81, Homosassa, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in Inverness.

Born Oct. 29, 1920, in Dekalb County, Ala., to James L. Honea and Nancy Graham, he came here in 1985 from Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

After retiring from the military, he worked for the U.S. government for 20 years in military intelligence before retiring again.

He was Methodist.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie P. Honea of Homosassa; two sons, Eugene J. Honea (Charla) of Nashville, Tenn., and Marc Honea (Mary Frances) of Newnan, Ga.; brother Crumpton B. Honea of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Sharon Kimpel, 55 Beverly Hills

Sharon G. Kimpel, 55, of Beverly Hills, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Summerfield.

A native of Oxnard, Ca., she came here three years ago from Atlanta, Ga.

She was a retired accounting associate for Lucent Technologies.

She was Methodist and was a member of the Crystal River United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed jazzercise, bowling and her two dogs.

Survivors include her husband, Donald H. Kimpel of Beverly Hills; father, Arthur Greenoe of Spring, Texas; sister, Pamela Crapse and husband, Richard, of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Bart Greenoe and wife, June, of Spring, Texas, and Philip Greenoe and wife, Elize, of Palm Harbor; son, Jeffery Mullennix of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughter, Ashley Mullennix of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Aileen McEvily, 70 Beverly Hills

Aileen McEvily, 70, Beverly Hills, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in Crystal River.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she came here five years ago from Phoenix, Ariz.

She was Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills.

She was a member of Irish American Club of Beverly Hills where she served as a past vice president.

She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed visiting Biloxi, Miss., and Las Vegas with her brother, Art. She cared for her family and was remembered for her sense of humor and as a friend.

Survivors include son, Matthew McEvily of Thailand; three daughters, Cathy Harris of Beverly Hills, Teri Kimball of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Beth Giles of Madison, Conn.; brother, Arthur McDermott of Beverly Hills; eight grandchildren; and companion, Moofy.

Jeanette Petraschuk, 85 Citrus Hills

Jeanette Knox Petraschuk, 85, Citrus Hills, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at her caretaker’s home of Estela Giddens of Citrus Hills.

Born Nov. 23, 2002, in Moose Jaw, Canada, she came here in 1975 from Bogota, N.J.

She was a homemaker.

She was Protestant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Petraschuk on Oct. 8, 1996.

Survivors include her sister, Isabelle Donaldson of Delta, Canada; three nephews, Larry (Phyllis) Donaldson of Coquitlam, Canada, John Donaldson of Delta, Canada, and George Christy of Houston, Texas; niece, Leslie Taylor of Delta, Canada; and her caregiver, Estela Giddens of Citrus Hills.

Arnold Bernard Pickarts, 68, Ocala, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in Ocala.

He was a mechanic with International Harvester. He worked for Decca Inc. at Oak Run and Pine Run.

Born in Merrimac, Wis., he came here in 1993 from Prairie du Sac, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Pickarts of Ocala; two sons, Jim Pickarts of Englewood and Michael Pickarts of Conway Springs, Kan.; three brothers, Donald Pickarts and Melvin Pickarts, both of Prairie du Sac, Wis., and Rodney Pickarts of Ocala; two sisters, Marjorie Alvin of Baraboo, Wis., and Shirley Breunig of Sauk City, Wis.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Maude Falvey, 100 Crystal River

Maude E. Falvey, 100, Crystal River, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.

She was born Feb. 12, 1902, in Springfield, Mass., to Mitchell and Mabel Cossack. She moved here from Milford, Conn., nine years ago.

She was a retired waitress. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Crystal River.

Survivors include her son, William F. Dexter and his wife, Barbara, of Crystal River; one sister, Marjorie Grady of Hopkinton, Mass.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Harriet Fechnay, 85 Homosassa

Harriet Fechnay, 85, Homosassa, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River.

She was born April 23, 1917, in Berlin, Germany, to Max and Edith Schwarz.

Mrs. Fechnay moved to the United States in 1980 from Germany. She moved to Homosassa in 1990 from New Jersey.

Survivors include her son, Renato Tichauer of New York, N.Y.; daughter, Monica Tichauer of Homosassa; two grandsons, Eduardo Tichauer of Charlotte, N.C., and Ricardo Tichauer of Washington, D.C.; and one great-grandson, Joshua Tichauer of Charlotte, N.C.

Virginia Kane, 72 Crystal River

Virginia S. Kane, 72, Crystal River, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa.

She was born May 7, 1930, in Bar Harbor, Maine to Norman and Erma (Stafford) Shaw and moved to this area six years ago from Spring Hill.

Mrs. Kane was a homemaker. She enjoyed her family and friends and touched the lives of all who knew her with her gentle and kind heart. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School and attended Westbrook College. She was a member of United Methodist Women. Virginia had the best of both worlds, she enjoyed winters on the water in Crystal River and summers at Long Pond in Mount Desert, Maine, living a life of simple elegance.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Alvin “Jack” Kane of Crystal River; two sons, Phillip N. Kane of Orlando and Alan R. Kane of Bar Harbor, Maine; daughter, Deborah A. Mayo of Spring Hill; brother, Norman P. (Mary Ellen) Shaw of Mount Desert, Maine; one sister, Nancy (Robert) Lombardi of Bar Harbor, Maine; and five grandchildren, Shannon L. and Samuel A. Kane, Joshua, Stephanie and Zachary Mayo.

Marion Ketterhagen, 88 Lecanto

Marion C. Ketterhagen, 88, Lecanto, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Crystal River.

She was born in Freedom, Wis., and came to this area two years ago from Dunedin. Prior to living in Dunedin, she lived in Wind Lake, Wis., from 1936 to 1990.

She was a dedicated caregiver to mentally challenged children in Union Grove, Wis., for 20 years. She and her late husband, Norbert Sakowski, also owned and operated Waterford Floor Covering in Wisconsin.

She was Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Beverly Hills and former member of Our Lady of Lourdes in Dunedin.

She enjoyed writing poetry and playing bridge with her friends at Brentwood.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Norbert Sakowski in 1958 and Raymond Ketterhagen in 1983.

Survivors include three daughters, Coni Keyes and husband, Robert, of Kissimmee, Julie Sakowski of Menomonie Falls, Wis., and Barbara A. Klug and husband, William, of Beverly Hills; 30 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren. Also, preceded in death by two grandchildren, William Mark Klug and Paul Roth; daughter, Patricia Roth and son-in-law, John Roth.

Velma Atkinson, 96 Inverness

Velma M. Atkinson, 96, Inverness, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Inverness.

She was born Nov. 9, 1905, in Fulton County, Ohio, to H. Emmett and Myrtle M. (Blain) Wilcox. She came to Florida in 1958 from Metamora, Ohio, and to Inverness in 1967.

She was a homemaker and an artist. She was a member of the Metamora Business Club and a former member of the Inverness Art League.

She was Lutheran.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert LeRoy Atkinson, in 1982.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie M. Lahman of Inverness; four grandchildren, Debra Boggs of Weeki Wachee, Joy M. Lesher of Delta, Ohio, Clifford Lahman of Vero Beach and Arthur Lahman of Inverness; 10 great-grandchildren, Chris Lahman of Toledo, Ohio, Adam Speicess, Aaron Speicess and Jessica Tanner of Delta, Ohio, Jonathan Lahman and Brad Lee Lahman, both of Weeki Wachee, Antonio Lahman, Justin Lahman, and Morgan Lahman, both of Vero Beach and Ben Lahman of Toledo, Ohio; and three great-great-grandchildren, Thomas Tanner, Jasmine Tanner and Christopher Logan Lahman.

William Desser Sr., 88 Beverly Hills

William J. Desser Sr., 88, Beverly Hills, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in Beverly Hills.

A native of Troy, N.Y., he came here 23 years ago from Staten Island, N.Y.

He retired after 25 years as a stockbroker on Wall Street and then pursued a career as an editorial cartoonist for New York City newspapers. He also was a comic book artist and he was well known for his oil paintings of landscapes, some of which are displayed in the gallery at Creative Frameworks in the Shoppes of Citrus Hills.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Beverly Hills.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Desser, in 1991 and his son, William J. Desser Jr., in 1983.

He is survived by his grandson, Charles M. Desser of Beverly Hills; and his daughter-in-law, Lisa M. Desser of Summerfield.
