Floyd G. Barker
Floyd G. Barker of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. He was 65.
He was born in Bayboro, N.C., and moved to Gainesville from Lochloosa nine years ago.
Mr. Barker was a retired commercial fisherman.
He attended Hog Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Cassels Barker of Fort McCoy; two daughters, Brenda Sparkman of Fort McCoy and Penny Kingsley of Arapahoe, N.C.; five sons, Ricky Atkinson, Robert Atkinson and Johnny Atkinson, all of Fort McCoy, and Larry Barker and Gary Barker, both of Trenton, N.C.; five sisters, Christine Modlin of Ocala, Lily Mae Pilgram of Marybelle, N.C., Beatrice Apple and Edna Lanchaster, both of Washington, D.C., and Ethel Barker of Virginia; and four brothers, Chandler Barker of Trenton, N.C., and J.C. Barker, Roosevelt Barker and Gilbert Barker, all of North Carolina.
Marietta E. Buchanan
MAYO -- Marietta E. Buchanan of Mayo died Tuesday at Lafayette Health Care. She was 85.
She was a native of Suwannee County, and she lived in Mayo for most of her life.
She was a member of Brewer Lake Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her good friend, Dub Townsend of Mayo, and a host of nieces and nephews.
John Darby
ALACHUA -- John Darby, a lifelong resident of Alachua, died Monday at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs after a brief illness. He was 59.
He was a meat cutter and a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Eva Brown of Alachua; two sisters, Rosa Robinson of Alachua and Jeannette Kellum-Jordan of Gainesville; and two brothers, Walter "Tot" Nattiel of Alachua and Thomas Nattiel of Gainesville.
Willie Hankins
Willie "Pop" Hankins of Gainesville died Saturday at Shands at AGH after a brief illness. He was 74.
He was born in Madison and moved to Gainesville from Ocala four years ago.
Mr. Hankins worked as a logger.
Survivors include two daughters, Cherry Hankins of Madison and Mary Ann Lewis of Gainesville; a son, Leon Hankins of Gainesville; two stepdaughters, Patricia Hill and Dorsey Johnson, both of Gainesville; a stepson, Larry Walls of Gainesville; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Virginia Winseman Harris
Virginia Winseman Harris died Friday at her Gainesville residence after a brief illness. She was 79.
She was born in Portsmouth, Va., and moved to Gainesville from Melbourne 12 years ago.
Mrs. Harris was a homemaker.
She attended Florida State College for Women and later graduated from the University of Florida. She was among the first class of women during the year in which UF became co-educational.
She was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Krig of Jacksonville Beach; two sons, Sam Harris of Gainesville and Andy Krig of Darby; a brother, Bill Winseman of Fernandina Beach; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Robert D. Hodge
Robert D. Hodge, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. He was 73.
He was a heavy-equipment operator and a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hodge of Gainesville; a daughter, Nancy Jasinski of Gainesville; a son, Franklin K. Sache of Gainesville; three sisters, Donnie Mae Owens, Dorothy Nell Llanas and Margie Lee Burnett, all of Gainesville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Melous I. Johnson
LIVE OAK -- Melous I. Johnson, a lifelong resident of Live Oak, died Tuesday at Surrey Place in Live Oak. He was 80.
Mr. Johnson was a retired farmer and school bus driver. He was a member of the Morocco Shrine Temple, the Shrine Club, the York Rite, the Barrett Masonic Lodge 43 and the New Harmony Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Annie Lou Johnson of Live Oak; and a sister, Oleta Clark of Live Oak.
Janet Linda Kurtz
Janet Linda Kurtz died Monday at her Gainesville residence. She was 42.
She was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Gainesville for 12 years. She was a credit manager for Farmer's Furniture. She was Catholic.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Kurtz of Gainesville; a daughter, Samantha Jillian Kurtz of Bowie, Md.; a son, Anthony Joseph Kurtz of Bowie; a sister, Kathleen M. Gray of Bowie; a brother, John J. Brown Jr. of Clifton, Va.; and her father, John J. Brown of Adelphi, Md. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.
Smyrna Strong Lawrence
Smyrna Strong Lawrence of Gainesville died Oct. 20 at Palm Garden of Gainesville after an extended illness. He was 89.
She was born in New River and moved to Gainesville from Starke 88 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a member of Springhill Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Buchanon of Gainesville; two sons, Arthur Lawrence and Irvin B. Lawrence, both of Gainesville; a sister, Lois Foxx of Gainesville; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Louis Marton
VALDOSTA, GA. -- Louis Marton of Valdosta, Ga., died Tuesday at South Georgia Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 82.
He was born in Fairfield, Conn., and moved from Raiford to Valdosta 10 years ago.
Mr. Marton served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a correctional officer for the Florida Department of Corrections, retiring after 23 years of service as a lieutenant.
He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Newsom of Valdosta; a son, Bobby Marton of Lake Butler; two sisters, Eleanor McGee and Carolyn Marton of Green Cove Springs; three brothers, Alex Marton of Lake City, Julius Marton of Connecticut and Bob Marton of Oregon; and five grandchildren.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Pleasant Henderson McBride Jr.
Pleasant Henderson McBride Jr. of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 72.
He was born in Memphis.
Mr. McBride served as a radar man in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as the dean of Effective Presentations for General Electric and retired as a computer executive for Prince George's County in Maryland.
He was a scout master and trainer in the Boy Scouts of America for the National Capital Area Council, receiving the Silver Beaver award. He was a member of the order of the Arrow Vigil Honor. He was also a Woodbadge scout master.
He was an elder at the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church in Chevy Chase, Md.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy O. McBride of Gainesville; a daughter, Mary Alice Burkhart of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sons, William Patrick McBride of Virginia Beach, Va. and Michael Carl McBride of Tallahassee; and six grandchildren.
Lou Ann Pittman
CHIEFLAND -- Lou Ann Pittman died Tuesday at her Chiefland residence after an extended illness. She was 66.
She was born in Indianola, Miss., and moved to Chiefland from Tupelo, Miss., 20 years ago.
Mrs. Pittman was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion Church of Jesus Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald W. "Bill" Pittman of Chiefland; two daughters, Patricia Denley and Joyce Williams, both of Chiefland; three sons, Jimmy Tilson of Chiefland, David Tilson of Florence, Miss., and George Allen Tilson of Otter Creek; a stepson, Roger Folks of Pompano Beach; a brother, Ned Ouzts of Indianola; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
