Dr. Motley F. Deakin

ATLANTA, Ga. - Dr. Motley F. Deakin, professor emeritus of English at the University of Florida, died of cancer Friday at the home of his son in Atlanta. He was 79.

Dr. Deakin was born in Ephraim, Utah, and came to Gainesville in 1962 from Texas Western University, El Paso. He held previous academic positions at the College of the Holy Names in Oakland, Calif.

Dr. Deakin received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1947 following service in the U.S. Army from 1942-45. He earned a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1960.

Dr. Deakin was a contributor to several journals in American and comparative literature and authored several articles and books on the contributions of Henry James and Rebecca West to American literature. He was a member of the Modern Language Association of America, the Henry James Society and the American Association of University Professors.

He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Dr. Deakin was preceded in death by his wife Lydia in 1985. Survivors include one son, Thomas Deakin of Atlanta; two sisters, Anita Isbell of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cathleen Deakin of Ephraim; and three grandchildren.

Frances Juanita Jones

OCALA - Frances Juanita Jones of Ocala died Saturday at Munroe Regional Medical Center. She was 85.

Mrs. Jones was born in Williston and lived most of her life in Marion County. She was an antique dealer and a past president of the Pioneer Garden Club and a former sales associate for Rheinauer's in downtown Ocala.

Survivors include her husband, a son, a stepdaughter, four grandchildren -- including Suzanne Bachus and Nita Chester of Gainesville -- and six great-grandchildren.

Jessie W. Edwards

MIAMI - Jessie W. Edwards of Miami died Jan. 11 at Baptist Hospital in Miami after a long illness. He was 71.

Mr. Edwards was a construction laborer.

He was born in Hawthorne and moved to Miami more than 40 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Doretha Edwards of Miami; two sons, including Henry L. Edwards Sr. of Hawthorne; two daughters; two sisters, Ora M. Alexander and Bessie M. Scott, both of Hawthorne; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Marian Bradley Martin

ST. PETERSBURG - Marian Bradley Martin of St. Petersburg died Sunday in St. Petersburg after a long illness. She was 102.

Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and a member of the McCabe United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg.

She was born in Rochelle and lived most of her life in St. Petersburg.

Survivors include two daughters; a son; a sister, Maria W. Collier of Gainesville; and several grandchildren.

Mary Ellen Stolle

TRENTON - Mary Ellen Stolle of Trenton died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. She was 79.

Mrs. Stolle was a retired assembler for Westinghouse.

She was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and moved from Mansfield to Trenton 17 years ago.

Mrs. Stolle was a member of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Ann Dickerson.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Peter Frank Stolle of Trenton; a son, Larry Eugene Stolle of Trenton; a brother, James Burger of Troy, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Dinkins Chisholm Henry

Gertrude Dinkins Chisholm Henry of Gainesville died unexpectedly Sunday at Shands at AGH. She was 58.

Mrs. Henry was a homemaker.

She was born in Blichton and moved from Dunnellon to Gainesville more than 30 years ago.

Mrs. Henry was a member of the Pallbearer's Lodge No. 113 and the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess and a member of the choir and praise team.

Survivors include her husband, Eamon D. Henry of Gainesville; two daughters, Lillian L. Williams of Gainesville and Angelina L. Chisom of Miami; three sons, Alvin J. Chisom of Fairbanks, Alaska, Glen Q. Chisholm and Kelvin T. Chisom of Gainesville; two stepdaughters, Terry Chisom of Tampa and Vanessa Henry of Gainesville; four stepsons, Edward Henry, Bennie L. Patterson, Shawn T. Henry and Vernon Henry, all of Gainesville; her mother, Lillie Mae Oliver Dinkins of Gainesville; her stepfather, Nathaniel King of Gainesville; a sister, Edna M. Jackson of Gainesville; six brothers, Eddie Dinkins, Earlin M. Dinkins, Ralph Dinkins and Irvin King, all of Gainesville, Robert L. Dinkins of Chiefland and Joseph Dinkins of Ocala; 16 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Nettie Ruth Starling Kirkland

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - Nettie Ruth Starling Kirkland of Keystone Heights died Tuesday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville after a long illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Kirkland was a homemaker and a member of the Starke Church of God.

She was born in Lawtey and moved from Starke to Keystone Heights 23 years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara A. Strickland of Starke; two sons, Lonzo T. Kirkland of Cleveland, Tenn., and David J. Kirkland of Keystone Heights; three brothers, Lonzo "Judge" Starling and Vernon "Dick" Starling, both of Lawtey, and Paul Starling of Starke; three sisters, Inez Batten and Naomi Starling, both of Starke, and Ruby Harris of Jacksonville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James William Lyons

MAYO - James William Lyons of Mayo died Wednesday at his home.

He was 90.

Mr. Lyons was a farmer and a deacon at the Riverside Baptist Church.

He was a lifelong resident of Mayo.

Mr. Lyons was preceded in death by a son, James Nolon Lyons.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Lyons of Mayo; a son, Roland Lyons of Mayo; a daughter, Eliza Jackson of Mayo; two sisters, Mattie Peele of Dunedin and Birlin Bradford of Clearwater; three brothers, Charles Lyons of Mayo, Eldridge Lyons of Lake Park, Ga., and Bob Lyons of Fort Myers; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Hogue McCrary

Mary Hogue McCrary of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 85.

Mrs. McCrary was a bookkeeper.

She was born in Waycross, Ga., and moved from Augusta, Ga., to Gainesville 45 years ago.

Mrs. McCrary was a member of the Northwest Baptist Church and the church's Bible Sunday school class, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Elk Wives, the Women of the Moose and the Cavalette Club in Jacksonville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon McCrary.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan M. Bowden of Frankfort, Ky., and Mary Frances Brezina of Gainesville; three sisters, Gussie Bowick and Peggy Rollins, both of Jacksonville, and Cathryn Stevens of Lake Placid; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Senella Black McGoldrick

Senella Black McGoldrick of Gainesville died Sunday at Integrated Health Services in Gainesville after a long illness. She was 90.

Mrs. McGoldrick was a homemaker and a Catholic.

She was born in Marianna and moved from New York City to Gainesville seven years ago.

Survivors include her caretakers, Nehemiah McDonald, Jessie McDonald and Marietta McDonald Brown, all of Gainesville, and Arlena McIntosh James of Lake City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nellie Chilson Rizor

CRYSTAL RIVER - Nellie Chilson Rizor of Crystal River died Tuesday at her home.

She was 78.

Mrs. Rizor was born in Forest, Ohio, and moved from Kenton, Ohio, to Crystal River 47 years ago.

She attended of the First Church of God in Crystal River.

Mrs. Rizor was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances K. White.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Charles Edward Rizor of Crystal River; three sons, Donald Paul Rizor of Anniston, Ala., Roger Dale Rizor of Lander, Wyo.; Charles Rizor Jr. of Beverly Hills; three daughters, Nellie Louise Siner of Homosassa, Donna Wilson of Newberry and Marjory Kraut of Largo; a sister, Claudia Pelz of Hampton, Ind.; 22 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
