Joseph M. McMahon Jr.

Capt. Joseph M. McMahon Jr. of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida after a long illness. He was 69.

Born in Washington, D.C., Capt. McMahon graduated from Pennsylvania Military College, now Widner University, with a civil engineering degree.

He served in the U.S. Army combat engineers during the Korean War and was a pilot in the U.S. Army in France and the United States. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.

Capt. McMahon later became assistant post engineer at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

He moved from Virginia to Gainesville 24 years ago.

Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth A. McMahon of Gainesville.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Cancer Society or to Gainesville Pet Rescue.

Jessie James Sanders

TRENTON - Jessie James Sanders of Trenton died Saturday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Trenton. He was 86.

Mr. Sanders was a retired foreman for Franklin Crate Mill in Micanopy.

Born in Geneva County, Ala., he moved from Micanopy to Trenton two years ago.

Mr. Sanders was a member of the Jonesville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Edna Merrell of Newberry and Jessie Lou Green of Micanopy; five sisters, Martha Culver of Pierson, Annie Mae Elmore of Cottonwood, Ala., Leslie Paul of Lake City, Madie Martin of Columbus, Ga., and Penny Gautney of Dothan, Ala.; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

John Lou Bowers

John Lou Bowers of Gainesville died Wednesday at Palm Garden of Gainesville after a long illness. She was 89.

Mrs. Bowers was a homemaker and a retired bookkeeper.

She was born in Alabama and moved from Falls Church, Va., to Gainesville 22 years ago.

Mrs. Bowers was a Southern Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Bowers.

Survivors include two sons, William Bowers of New Canaan, Conn., and John V. Bowers of Fairfax, Va.; a brother, Yancy Sweet of Newberry; two sisters, Sue Cottingham of Gainesville and Mary Lavas of Torrance, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Aderholt Collins

BRANFORD -- Elizabeth Aderholt Collins of Branford died Wednesday at Lake City Medical Center after a long illness. She was 90.

Mrs. Collins was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong resident of Branford.

Mrs. Collins was a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Geneva Collins-Beyer of Branford and Glorine Sanders of Bell; two sisters, Patricia Townsend and Ruby Williams, both of Lake City; a brother, Bill Aderholt of Alachua; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Elizabeth Luke Elixson

WORTHINGTON SPRINGS -- Elizabeth Luke Elixson of Worthington Springs died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 69.

Mrs. Elixson was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was born in Tifton, Ga., and lived most of her life in Union County.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Elixson of Worthington Springs; three daughters, Katheryn Arthur of Casseda, Ga., and Paula Elixson and JoAnn Blackwelder, both of Worthington Springs; two sons, John Paul Elixson and Timmy Elixson, both of Worthington Springs; a sister, Betty Clemons of Gainesville; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Karl Frese

LIVE OAK -- Robert Karl Frese of Live Oak died Sunday at his home. He was 73.

Mr. Frese was an architect. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was born in Newark, N.J., and moved from Miami to Live Oak 10 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Farmer Frese of Live Oak; three sons, Steven Frese of Tampa, Richard Frese of Pembroke Pines and Robert Frese of Clearwater; three daughters, Susan Frese and Kay Frese Smith, both of Live Oak, and Patricia McClendon of Largo; his parents, Onla and Karl Frese of Miami; a brother, Karl Frese Jr. of Miami; a sister, Joan Drennan of Naples; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville.

Clara Mason

LONGWOOD -- Clara Mason of Longwood died Wednesday at her home. She was 91.

Mrs. Mason was a former math teacher at Buchholz High School. She previously taught at Quincy High School in Quincy.

She was born in Bonifay and lived in Gainesville for 33 years before moving to Longwood four years ago.

Mrs. Mason was a Methodist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Carlton Mason.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Brown of Longwood; two grandchildren; and one great- grandchild.

Jack Seabrooks

Jack Seabrooks of Gainesville died Sept. 5 at Shands at AGH after a long illness. He was 80.

Mr. Seabrooks was a retired employee of Shands at AGH.

He was born in Macon, Ga., and moved from Macon to Gainesville several years ago.

Mr. Seabrooks was a member of Johnson Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Brown Seabrooks of Gainesville; four sons, Wilbert Brown and Louis Lee, both of Gainesville, Earl Johnson of Killem, Texas, and Michael Johnson of Dumfries, Va.; five daughters, Judy Timmons, Leary Johnson, Kathy White, Genora Dennis and Gail Lee, all of Gainesville; 31 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jeanette Taylor

Jeanette "Deb" Taylor of Gainesville died Tuesday at her home after a long illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Taylor was a former elementary school teacher and later managed a hotel.

She was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and moved from Chicago to Gainesville 19 years ago. She received degrees in education and science from the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh.

Mrs. Taylor was a volunteer teacher in several of the local schools. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Phil Taylor of Gainesville; a sister, Dorothy Nevitt of Forest Hill, Md.; a stepdaughter, Judy Weber of Gainesville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.

Taurus S. Anderson

Taurus S. Anderson of Gainesville died unexpectedly Sept. 9 at Shands at AGH. He was 23.

Mr. Anderson was a student at Santa Fe Community College and a lifelong resident of Gainesville.

Survivors include a son, Taurus S. Anderson Jr. of Gainesville; his mother, Verralla Dunmore of Gainesville; his father, Hudson Anderson of Gainesville; four sisters, Shawn Mobley and Kimbree Anderson, both of Gainesville, and Tiffany Anderson and Jacquelyn Anderson, both of Alachua; three brothers, Eric Anderson of Gainesville, Hudson B. Anderson III of Atlanta and Ezra J. Anderson of Tallahassee.
