Edgar "Mel" Emmelhainz
TALLAHASSEE -- Edgar "Mel" Emmelhainz of Tallahassee died Saturday in Starke. He was 88.
Mr. Emmelhainz was born in Grove City, Ohio. He moved to Florida in 1922 and had lived in Tallahassee since 1954. Mr. Emmelhainz was a retired assistant director of the Division of Vocational, Technical and Adult Education for the state Department of Education. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a life member of the Florida Vocational Association and was a past president of the Florida Trade and Industrial Association.
Survivors include one son, Edgar A. Emmelhainz Jr. of Lake Butler, and three grandchildren.
Louise Raulerson Latimer
Louise Raulerson Latimer of Gainesville died Friday at Palm Garden of Gainesville. She was 88.
Mrs. Latimer was a homemaker.
Born in Kingwood, Ga., she moved 65 years ago from Bartow to Gainesville.
She was past president of Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary and a 50-year member of the Gainesville Woman's Club. She also was a member of the Gainesville Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 44, and a past Grand Electa of The Grand Chapter with the organization.
In addition, Mrs. Latimer belonged to the Dogwood Circle of the Garden Club, the Khem Temple of the Order of The Nile No. 85, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kirby Smith Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy and Southern Dames of America.
She was also a 60-year member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Frank Latimer; and her son, Louie Frank Latimer Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Bettie Latimer Kane of St. Augustine and Suzanne Latimer Dowling of Gainesville; a son, B.T. Latimer of Gainesville; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Ricky Albert Ezzell
WILLISTON -- Ricky Albert Ezzell of Williston died Monday at his home after a long illness. He was 36.
Mr. Ezzell was a sales clerk. He was also a speaker for North Florida AIDS Network.
He was a lifelong resident of Williston and a graduate of Williston High School.
Mr. Ezzell was a member of Pentecostal Church of God in Williston.
Survivors include a son, Ricky Anthony Ezzell of Williston; a daughter, Annalise Ezzell of Williston; his father, Albert Ezzell of Williston; his mother, Susan O. Ezzell of Williston; two brothers, Stacy Morgan and Mark Ezzell, both of Williston; two sisters, Betty Sue Crosby of Williston and Danielle Harper of Ocala; and his grandmother, Hazel Lee of Williston.
Norman David Helms
Norman David Helms of Gainesville died Friday at Shands at AGH. He was 35.
Mr. Helms was a resident of Juniper Home at Tacachale.
Born in Dade City, he moved from Fort Myers to Gainesville 23 years ago.
He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Carol and David Gant of Dade City; a brother, Terry Perkins of Dade City; and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Sapp of Dade City.
Mary Dorothy Jacobus
Mary Dorothy Jacobus of Gainesville died Monday at Palm Garden of Gainesville. She was 95.
Mrs. Jacobus was a homemaker.
She was born in Pittsburgh and moved from Merrillville, Ind., to Gainesville 24 years ago.
She was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Gainesville and of the Order of the Eastern Star in Crown Point, Ind.
Mrs. Jacobus was preceded in death by her husband, George Jacobus.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Forgnone of Gainesville; a son, George Reed Jacobus of Hickson, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
AnnaMay Syers Johnson
CROSS CITY -- AnnaMay Syers Johnson of Cross City died Sunday at Ayers Health Care. She was 88.
Mrs. Johnson was a former saleswoman. She also volunteered at Ayers Health Care Center.
Born in Passaic, N.J., she moved from Clifton, N.J., to Cross City about 60 years ago.
She was a member of Lydia Baptist Church in Cross City.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean McCleod and MargieMay Tarantino, both of Cross City, and Elinor Schroeder of Wayne, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Peggy Lou Lord King
Peggy Lou Lord King of Gainesville died unexpectedly Saturday at her home.
She was 34.
Mrs. King was a cashier for Direct Imports Dealership.
Born in Battle Creek, Mich., she moved from Coleman to Gainesville 19 years ago.
She was a member of Gainesville Disc Golf Club.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Stephen King of Gainesville; two daughters, Keirsten Lynette King and Ashley Maye King, both of Gainesville; a son, James Marshall King of Gainesville; her father, Robert Lord of Coleman; four sisters, Cheryl Button and Willa Gould, both of Wildwood, Becky Lopresto of Zephyrhills and Beverly Knowles of Kissimmee; and a brother, Kenneth Lord of Wildwood.
Helen Frances Camplin
Helen Frances Camplin of Gainesville died Tuesday at her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Camplin had been secretary and treasurer at Southern Memorial Park cemetery in Miami, which she and her late husband, John Camplin, owned. Born in Newark, Ohio, she moved to Gainesville from Miami 29 years ago.
She was also secretary and treasurer of a bowling team that played at Alley Katz Corner bowling alley in Gainesville.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Lisa Braun, and her grandson, Joseph Braun, both of Gainesville; and four great-grandchildren.
L.E. Hatcher
CROSS CITY -- L.E. Hatcher of Cross City, a former Dixie County sheriff, city councilman and commissioner, died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was 79.
Born in Marianna, Mr. Hatcher moved to Cross City at a young age. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cross City.
He served in the Army and fought in the battle of Normandy, for which he later was awarded two Bronze Star Medals and two Purple Hearts.
His survivors include two sons, Dewey and Leslie Hatcher, both of Cross City; three daughters, Jenny Polston of Fort White, Deborah Dyer of Dalton, Ga., and Faith Hill of Cross City; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
George Middleton
GREEN COVE SPRINGS -- George Middleton of Putnam Hall died Wednesday at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs after a lengthy illness. He was 63.
Mr. Middleton was born in Gainesville and moved to Putnam Hall 33 years ago from Gainesville.
He graduated from Alachua County public schools, served in the U.S. Army and was a courier at Sun Trust Bank.
Survivors are his wife, Bessie Middleton of Putnam Hall; his mother, Mattie Middleton of Gainesville; four daughters, Sherry Robbins of Putnam Hall, Sandra Middleton and Yvette Middleton, both of Orlando, and Charlene Barber of Tallahassee; two sons, George Middleton of Washington, D.C., and Ron Middleton of Gainesville; a stepson, Walter Donley of Putnam Hall; a sister, Lillie Mills of Gainesville; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Charles Nichols
CITRA -- Charles Nichols of Citra died July 15 at the Ocala Regional Medical Center from cancer. He was 50.
Mr. Nichols was born in Hawthorne and moved to Citra 20 years ago. He worked for the city of Ocala's storm drain department and was a member of the Holy Deliverance Revival Center.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Thornton Nichols of Citra; a daughter, Laura Strickland of Ocala; a son, Charles Jerome Nichols of Citra; his parents, Robert and Emma Nichols, both of Hawthorne; three brothers, Henry Nichols, Bernard Nichols and Alford Nichols, all of Hawthorne; and three sisters, Rosa Carey, Katie McClendon and Patricia Buie, all of Hawthorne.
