Carol Elizabeth Taylor
Carol Elizabeth Taylor of Gainesville died Sunday at Hospice of North Central Florida. She was 84.
Mrs. Taylor was a researcher, instructor and consultant at the University of Florida. She also worked for the United Nations and helped in World War II factory efforts.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Sichuan Province, China, where her father was a missionary. After graduating from Mount Allison University in Nova Scotia, she did graduate work in social anthropology at the London School of Economics, the College de France in Paris and Birmingham University.
During World War II, she organized, planned and directed the employment of women in Britain's wartime industry, using U.S. efforts as a model. This work led to a post in Germany with the United Nations, helping with the problem of wartime refugees and displaced persons.
Mrs. Taylor later worked as a consultant and teacher in the newly formed College of Nursing, and also held an appointment in the department of anthropology.
In 1970, she published "In Horizontal Orbit: Hospitals and the Cult of Efficiency." She continued to research and teach until retiring in 1985.
Survivors include her husband, Frank H. Taylor of Gainesville; two daughters, Anne Haimes of Atlanta and Mary Taylor of Boulder, Colo.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.
Gertie Lucille Westberry
LAKE CITY -- Gertie Lucille Westberry of Branford died Wednesday night at Shands at Lake Shore after a long illness. She was 73.
Mrs. Westberry was a seamstress for the Jayco Co. in Live Oak and Branford and also worked many years for Sunstate Manufacturing in Lake City, retiring in 1987.
Born in Hamilton County, Mrs. Westberry moved 28 years ago from Largo to Branford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Westberry.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Hopkins of Branford; a son, Frankie Croft of Lake City; a brother, Claude Rodgers of Branford; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
Gladys Anne Thomas Birt
Gladys Anne Thomas Birt of Gainesville died Monday in Gainesville.
She was 70.
Mrs. Birt was a homemaker. She was a lifelong resident of Gainesville and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Birt of Gainesville and Connie Melanson of Bartow; three sons, Lee Birt, Mike Birt and Tommy Birt, all of Gainesville; a brother, William P. "Bud" Thomas of Bridgeview, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Louise Floyd and Pam Bishop, both of Gainesville; and two granddaughters.
Glenda Jean Brown-Black
OLD TOWN -- Glenda Jean Brown-Black of Old Town died July 14 at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville following an auto accident.
She was 43.
Mrs. Brown-Black was a homemaker and a chairwoman for the Girl Scouts Cookie Project.
Born in Lakeland, she was a lifelong resident of Old Town. She was a 1974 graduate of Dixie County High School, received a CNA degree from Lake City Community College and a CDA degree from Central Florida Community College.
She was a member of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God In Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Black of Old Town; a daughter, Armetta Jean Brown of Old Town; her mother, Willmonteen Smith of Cross City; her father, Eugene Brown of Toledo, Ohio; her stepfather, Jessie L. Crawl of Melbourne; two stepdaughters, Heatcher Black and Tresitin Black, both of Jamaica; two stepsons, Greg Black and Gaven Black, both of Jamaica; two sisters, Carolia Y. Robinson of Holiday and Mona Brown of Toledo; three brothers, Robert L. Robinson and Jaffry L. Crawl Jr., both of Miami, and Leonard Ashe of Lakeland; her maternal grandmother, Lona C. Evans of Old Town; her paternal grandmother, Leila Mae Brown of Lakeland; and five grandchildren.
Flora Mae McCray Gregg
Flora Mae McCray Gregg of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was 81.
Mrs. Gregg was a homemaker.
Born in Arredondo, she lived in Gainesville most of her life.
She was a member of the Morning Star Society and of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mother's Board and a former choir member.
Mrs. Gregg was preceded in death by her husband, Lindon Gregg.
Survivors include her caregiver, Rebecca Robinson of Archer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Claude Martin Sr.
WILLISTON -- Claude Martin Sr. of Williston died Friday at Oakview Care Center in Williston.
He was 83.
Mr. Martin was a retired farmer for Phillip Livestock Co.
Born in Tennessee, he moved from Tennessee to Williston 30 years ago.
He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Martin of Williston; three daughters, Sallie Martin of Williston and Sallie Smith and Reita Pierce, both of Tennessee; two sons, Claude Martin Jr. and Johnell Smith, both of Tennessee; and two stepsons, Jerry Graves of Williston and Darrell Graves of Pahokee.
Elizabeth McKnight
ARCHER -- Elizabeth "Betty" McKnight of Archer died July 10 at Integrated Health Services in Gainesville after a brief illness. She was 87.
Mrs. Mc- Knight was a foster parent and a caretaker for elderly people.
Born in Archer, she moved from Jamaica, N.Y., back to Archer 15 years ago. She formerly attended Archer Community School.
She was a Jehovah's Witness.
Survivors include her husband, Wyman McKnight of Jamaica, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
Ronnie Lee Monroe
WILLISTON -- Ronnie Lee Monroe of Williston died July 15 at his home.
He was 44.
Mr. Monroe formerly served in the U.S. Army. He was a 1973 graduate of Williston Vocational School.
He was a lifelong resident of Williston.
Survivors include his mother, Georgia Mae Monroe of Williston; four sisters, Gloria Dallas of Williston, Barbara Wallace and Diane Aina, both of Atlanta, and Linda Monroe of Gainesville; five brothers, Bennie Monroe and Dennis Monroe, both of Gainesville, Leonard Monroe of Fort Myers, and Carl Monroe and Curtis Monroe, both of Williston; and his grandparents, Joseph and Betty Monroe of Williston.
John Horace Oakley
CHIPLEY -- John Horace Oakley of Chipley died Tuesday at North West Florida Community Hospital in Chipley.
He was 87.
Mr. Oakley was a former truck driver.
Born in Lavonia, Ga., he moved from Gainesville to Chipley five years ago.
He was a member of North Central Baptist Church in Dade City.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Wells of Chipley, Nancy Weeks of Newberry and Pam Newby of Dothan, Ala.; three brothers, Duke Oakley of High Springs, R.R. Oakley of Jacksonville and Tommy Oakley of Lake Wales; a sister, Clara McKay of High Springs; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Julia Pelham Pilcher
MELROSE -- Julia Pelham Pilcher of Melrose died Friday at Shands at AGH in Gainesville. She was 91.
Mrs. Pilcher was a retired housekeeper.
Born in Earleton, she was a lifelong resident of Melrose.
She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Melrose.
Survivors include a son, Arthur Pilcher of Melrose; four brothers, Johnnie Pelham and Ellis Pelham, both of Waldo, Lawrence Pelham of Hopewell, Va., and Charlie Pelham of Fernandina Beach; three sisters, Malissa Pelham of Starke, Netter Pugh of Pierson and Daisy Bell of Earleton.
