Bertha McCabe Arpen

LAKE BUTLER -- Bertha McCabe Arpen of Lake Butler died Monday at Brookwood Nursing Center in Starke after a long illness. She was 82.

Mrs. Arpen was a homemaker and a member of New River Baptist Church of Brooker.

Born in Council, Ga., she lived most of her life in Jacksonville before moving to Lake Butler 13 years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Jean Duane of Keystone Heights; three sons, James I. Balkcom of Lake Butler, Johnny Arpen of Keystone Heights and Henry Arpen of Jacksonville; a sister, Clara Simmons of Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grand-children.

Raymond L. Bohannon Sr.

Raymond L. Bohannon Sr. of Gainesville died unexpectedly Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 55.

Mr. Bohannon was a crew leader in the water/wastewater division at Gainesville Regional Utilities.

Born in Lake City, he moved from O'Brien to Gainesville 49 years ago.

He was a member of Woodmen of the World and of Westwood Hills Church of God.

Mr. Bohannon enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Bohannon of Gainesville; a son, Raymond L. Bohannon Jr. of Lake City; a daughter, Tammy R. Lowe of Gainesville; two stepdaughters, Vicky Epperson of Orlando and Teresa Wilson of Atlanta; a brother, Frank Bohannon of Micanopy; a sister, Nina Myers of Trenton; and four grandchildren.

Phenola Carroll

Phenola Carroll of Gainesville died June 30 at her daughter's home in Gainesville. She was 87.

Mrs. Carroll worked in many capacities over the years with her husband, a bishop of the United Methodist Church.

She and her husband made a pilgrimage to India as representatives of the YMCA and the YWCA.

She later was an analyst for the War Department during World War II, was a caseworker for the Department of Welfare in New York City and was a social worker for the Baltimore Housing Department.

Born in Frederick, Md., she moved from Baltimore to Gainesville two years ago.

She graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in education from Morgan State College, now Morgan State University, in Baltimore.

Mrs. Carroll was named Massachusetts Mother of the Year in 1982 by the governor.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Bishop Edward Carroll Sr. of Gainesville; a son, Edward Carroll Jr. of Gainesville; a daughter, Nansi Carroll of Gainesville; a brother, Wilbur G. Valentine of Baltimore; and two grandsons.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville or to the Phenola Carroll Scholarship at the Walden School in San Francisco.

Johnny Max Flowers

Johnny Max Flowers of Gainesville died unexpectedly Sunday at Shands at AGH. He was 57.

Mr. Flowers retired from the city of Gainesville and later worked at Alachua County Public Works Department.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Born in Elba, Ala., he moved from Elba to Gainesville 49 years ago.

He was a Baptist.

Mr. Flowers was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1192.

Survivors include a son, John Michael Flowers of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Hesters of Gainesville; and a brother, Mack Roberts of Fairbanks.

Lozelle Basford Heddings

CROSS CITY -- Lozelle Basford Heddings of Cross City died Sunday at her home after a long illness. She was 62.

Mrs. Heddings was a former bookkeeper.

Born in Marianna, she was a lifelong resident of Cross City.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Heddings of Cross City; a son, Robbie Lee of Cross City; a daughter, Bunny Norris of Old Town; a brother, Earnest Basford of Marianna; two sisters, Elizabeth Price of Kite, Ga., and Ruby Alday of Cypress; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Herschel Johnson

LAKE BUTLER -- Herschel Johnson of Lake Butler died Monday at his home after a brief illness. He was 68.

Mr. Johnson was retired from Quality Controls Electronics.

Born in Suttington, Ky., he lived most of his life in Kentucky before moving to Lake Butler 12 years ago.

He had attended Pine Level Baptist Church in Starke.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Hall Johnson of Lake Butler; three daughters, Tina Browning of Starke, and Misty Sue Redding and Lisa Johnson, both of Lake Butler; five sons, Todd Johnson of Largo, Gray Johnson of Gainesville, Michael Johnson of Irvin, Tenn., Edward Decker of Lake Butler and James Fassett of High Springs; four brothers, Cecil Johnson of Kingsport, Tenn., Carroll Johnson, Jerry Johnson and Jackie Johnson, all of Cincinnati; three sisters, Virgie Laney, Christina Kerns and Marlina Johnson, all of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.

Lena Belle Mathews

WILLISTON -- Lena Belle Mathews of Williston died Monday at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville.

She was 77.

Mrs. Mathews retired from the U.S. Navy and had served during World War II.

Born in Orlando, she was a lifelong resident of Williston.

She was a Methodist.

Survivors include her husband, William D. Mathews of Williston; a son, Wendell Keith Roberts of Williston; a daughter, Mary Ann Wilson of Williston; and five grandchildren.

M.E. Peterson

HIGH SPRINGS -- M.E. "Gene" Peterson of High Springs died Tuesday at his home. He was 73.

Mr. Peterson was a retired locomotive engineer for Seaboard Coastline Railroad.

He was a lifelong resident of High Springs.

Mr. Peterson was an elder at Santa Fe Hills Church of Christ and was a member of Golden Railroaders in Tallahassee.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelia Peterson Emerson.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Beach Peterson of High Springs; a son, Mark Peterson of High Springs; a daughter, Lori Presnell of High Springs; a brother, Hawley Peterson of High Springs; and six grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice in Chiefland.

James Drayton Means

James Drayton Means of Micanopy died Saturday in Micanopy. He was 92.

Mr. Means was born in McIntosh and moved to Micanopy 54 years ago. He was a farmer and a Methodist.

Survivors include three caregivers, Debbie Noble and Leila Rodriguez, both of Micanopy, and Melanie Clifford of Gainesville.

Glendora E. Passman

Glendora E. Passman of High Springs died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville following a lengthy illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Passman was born in Van Buren, Ark., and moved to High Springs from Elm Grove, Wis., 17 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of High Springs Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene J. Passman of High Springs; two sons, Denny Passman of Fort Pierce and Jerome Passman of San Diego; one daughter, Susan Landon-Kuhn of Briarcliff, N.Y.; one brother, Lafe Allen of Washington D.C.; and four grandchildren.

Elva Lillie Powell

Elva Lillie Powell of Vero Beach died Friday at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach following an extended illness. She was 74.

Mrs. Powell was born in Gainesville and lived in Trenton and Macclenny before moving to Vero Beach five years ago. She was a state social worker for 42 years, including at the Northeast Florida State Hospital in Macclenny. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Macclenny and Ryanwood Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church in Vero Beach. She is a graduate of the University of North Florida.

Survivors include three daughters, Hester Strickland Bloom of Sugarland, Texas, Allene Strickland Moorehead of Vero Beach and Sharon Strickland Underill of Melbourne; one sister, Ruby Lee Wilson of Trenton; one brother, Earl Gilbert Rodgers of Gainesville; and five grandchildren.
