Lois Spangler Pierce

Lois Spangler Pierce died Saturday at her residence in Gainesville. She was 89.

Mrs. Pierce was born in Tuluca, Ill., and moved to Gainesville from Williston in 1988.

She worked in personnel records at State Farm.

She was a member of Unity Church of Gainesville.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by two daughters, Ellen Spangler of Mentone, Ala., and Diane Bunting of Phoenix; a sister, Ruth Wiley of Ill; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Unity Church of Gainesville.

Sidney J. Thomas Sr.

Sidney J. Thomas Sr. of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at AGH after a prolonged illness. He was 82.

Mr. Thomas was born in Bell and moved to Gainesville in 1934.

After graduating from P.K. Yonge High School, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 88th Infantry Division in Italy.

He was a retired real estate investor and a member of Parkview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Louise Kahlich Thomas of Gainesville; a daughter, Carolyn Thomas Goldsmith of Homewood, Ala.; a son, Sid Thomas Jr. of Gainesville; four sisters, Muriel Hogan and Mevalee Johnson, both of Gainesville, Avis Wilkinson of Bradenton and Mervin Bigler of Jacksonville; six grandsons; and a great-grandson.

Lyn Eugene Vaught

BRONSON -- Lyn Eugene Vaught of Bronson died Sunday at Nature Coast Hospital in Williston. He was 43.

Mr. Vaught was born in Montomery, Ala., and moved to Bronson from Pinellas Park three years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Vaught of Bronson; a son, Brian Vaught of Marietta, Ga.; his mother, Ira Vaught of Kennesaw, Ga.; a brother, Richard Vaught of Acworth, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Marion Edward White

SARASOTA -- Marion Edward White of Sarasota died Dec. 9 while vacationing in Ronda, Spain. He was 72.

Mr. White, a graduate of Gainesville High School, served in the U.S. Army during the post-World War II occupation of Europe and later graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology.

He worked as a chemist for Royal Crown Cola Company in Columbus, Ga., and later as a representative of the pharmaceutical firm Lederle Laboratories in Sarasota.

Following an early retirement, he was an active real estate investor and manager of properties.

He was a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church of Sarasota.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Storey White of Sarasota; a daughter; three sons; a sister; and six grandchildren.

Josephine Eiler

Josephine Eiler, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Dec. 5 at North Florida Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Eiler was the owner of Josephine's Restaurant and Sandwich Shop.

She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, James Filer of Columbus, Ohio.

Rose Ellen Gunn

TRENTON -- Rose Ellen Gunn died Tuesday at her residence in Trenton. She was 62.

Mrs. Gunn was born in Indianapolis and moved to Trenton from Suwannee seven years ago.

She worked at Waffle House.

She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her companion, William F. Price of Trenton; a daughter, Luann Hoskins of Indiana; two sons, Jackie Harris and Jay D. Gunn, both of Trenton; six sisters, Marie Flynn of Ohio, Pat Stanley of High Springs, Carol Murray of Cedar Key, and Betty Lodgen, Bertha Bailey and Polly Bellis, all of Indiana; a brother, Richard Camden of Kentucky; six grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Frances Viola Ford McGee

Frances Viola Ford McGee died Dec. 7 at her Gainesville residence following a brief illness. She was 76.

Mrs. McGee was born in Jacksonville and moved to Gainesville from Detroit 50 years ago.

She was a retired custodian for the Alachua County School Board.

She was the founder and pastor of Love Tabernacle Holiness Church. She sang in the Gospel Choir with the late Mahalia Jackson at the Love Temple Church of God in Christ in Detroit.

Pastor McGee ministered to many people over the years through counseling and prayer.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Nobles, Cynthia Peterson, Sylvia Gibson and Carolyn Ross, all of Gainesville and Bernell Peterson of St. Petersburg; five sons, Anthony Michael Hooker of Bossier City, La., Vincent Hooker and Charles Ford, both of Jacksonville, John Hooker of Fort Lauderdale and Alton Ford of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Cobb of Baltimore; and 14 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.

Madie Hix

DOWLING PARK -- Madie Hix of Dowling Park died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Center in Dowling Park. She was 84.

Mrs. Hix was born in Greensboro, Fla., and moved to Dowling Park from Jacksonville in 1987.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bixler Memorial Advent Christian Church in Dowling Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian M. Hix.

She is survived by a sister, Myrtle Bly DuPre of Dowling Park; four nieces, including Emma Sue Slawson of Gainesville and Mabel G. Moorhead of Lake City; and three nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to any charity that holds significance to the giver.

Ollie Mae Robinson

OCALA -- Ollie Mae Robinson of Ocala died Dec. 9 at Nature Coast Hospital in Williston. She was 77.

Mrs. Robinson was born in Williston and later moved to Ocala.

She was a retired citrus fruit packer.

She was educated through the Levy County schools.

Mrs. Robinson was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Robinson.

Survivors include four stepdaughters, Marie Lamb of Dundee, Lucille Perry of Ocala, and Faddie Mae Clarkson and Willie Mae Clarkson, both of St. Petersburg; a stepson, Elijah Robinson of Ocala; three sisters, Ola Mae Hicks and Alean Brown of Williston and Clara Lee Grant of Miami; three brothers, Sam Hammonds and Benjamin Hammonds, both of Williston, and Theodore Hammonds of Miami; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.

Emma Lou Jackson Stephenson

Emma Lou Jackson Stephenson of Gainesville died Dec. 8 at the Hospice House of Gainesville. She was 75.

Mrs. Stephenson was born in Wadley, Ga., and moved to Gainesville in the 1930s.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Missionary Board.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Robert Stephenson Jr. of Gainesville; a daughter, Barbara Cameron of Evanston, Ill.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
