Brian Riewald

Brian Riewald of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained in a cycling accident. He was 29.

Mr. Riewald was a doctoral student in zoology at the University of Florida in the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research. His research looked at how commercial fishing affects sea turtles in the Azores.

A native of Wilmington, Del., he grew up in Delaware and Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Garnet Valley High School. From 1990 until his graduation in 1994, he studied biology at the University of Virginia. In his freshman year, he was a competitive swimmer on the university team. He moved to Gainesville in 1997 after working in Alaska as an observer for the National Marine Fisheries Service. He was an avid surfer, swimmer, cyclist and singer. He was a member of the Christ Community Church in Gainesville.

Survivors include his parents, Paul and Kathryn Riewald of Gallatin, Tenn.; a brother, Scott Riewald of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his maternal grandmother, Esther VerMerris of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Funeral services will be in Hendersonville, Tenn., on Oct. 20.

Martin Stienfurth

Martin Stienfurth died Saturday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 54.

Mr. Stienfurth was born in Adrian, Mich., and moved to Gainesville from Noel, Mo., two years ago.

He was a former employee of Gator Door. He served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Donna Stienfurth of Gainesville; and sons Steven Stienfurth of Noel, Mo., and Aaron Stienfurth of Gainesville.

Cissy Roundtree Summerlin

Cissy Roundtree Summerlin died Wednesday at her residence in Gainesville. She was 52.

Ms. Summerlin was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.

She graduated from Gainesville High School in 1967. She was one of the first graduates of the Santa Fe Community College nursing program, and later worked as a nurse at Alachua General Hospital, Shands at the University of Florida and North Florida Surgical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Shannon Summerlin Jones of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Stephen Summerlin of Valdosta, Ga.; her father, Robert E. Roundtree of Springfield, Mo.; brothers Robert E. Roundtree Jr. of Gainesville and James D. Roundtree. of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.

Frank Xavier Trauscht

Frank Xavier Trauscht of St. Petersburg died Monday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bay Pines. He was 48.

The former Gainesville resident was a master carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran.

Local survivors include his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Leon Duda of Gainesville.

Carolynn VunKannon

Carolynn VunKannon of Gainesville died Oct. 6 at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 63.

Mrs. VunKannon was born in Flint, Mich., and lived in Long Island, N.Y., for 40 years before moving to Gainesville in 1997.

She participated in the Willis Bodine Chorale and the choir at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She also worked at Catholic Charities.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond VunKannon of Gainesville; a daughter, Dorothy McComb of Rahway, N.J.; sons David VunKannon of Teaneck, N.J., Eric Von Kannon of Massapequa, N.Y., and Marc VunKannon of Wading River, N.Y.; her father, Richmond Browne of Fort Myers; and brothers Richmond Browne Jr. of Hamden, Conn., and David Browne of Oberlin, Ohio.

Oree Wilcher

HIGH SPRINGS - Oree Wilcher died Monday at Shands at AGH following a lengthy illness. He was 78.

Mr. Wilcher was born in Oakfield, Ga., and moved to High Springs about 20 years ago.

He was a retired farmer and a Baptist.

He is survived by a sister, Lula B. Williams of High Springs.

Wilma R. Altschuler

Wilma R. Altschuler of Gainesville died Wednesday at her son's home in Gainesville. She was 75.

Mrs. Altschuler was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Gainesville from Margate four years ago.

She worked in retail sales and volunteered at local hospitals. She enjoyed playing bingo.

Survivors include a son, Gary Altschuler of Gainesville; and a brother, Melvin Fleissner of Margate.

Brenda Kay Wilbert Bell

Brenda Kay Wilbert Bell of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida following a brief illness. She was 44.

Mrs. Bell moved to Gainesville from Trenton 20 years ago.

She was a house parent and counselor with the Alachua County Department of Juvenile Justice.

She graduated from Trenton High School in 1975. She received a degree in accounting from Career City College.

She was a member of the Trenton Westside Church of Christ and the Singing Voices of Gainesville.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Bell of Gainesville; sons Michael Terrance Bell and Maurice LaPatrick Bell, both of Gainesville; her parents, Lennon and Evelyn Wilbert of Trenton; sisters Shirley L. Wilbert, Helen A. Thomas and LaTrenda S. Hogan, all of Trenton; a brother, Terrance L. Wilbert of Belle Glade; and her grandparents, Loretha and Bob Mills of Tampa.

Jessica Marie Bellwood

HAMPTON - Jessica Marie Bellwood, the 3-year-old daughter of Ralph and Sharon Bellwood of Hampton, died Monday at Shands at the University of Florida following a sudden illness.

In addition to her parents, Jessica is survived by a brother, Robert Bellwood of Hampton; and her grandmother, Catherine B. Keith of State College, Pa.

Staretha Rowe-Castillo

Staretha "Star" Rowe-Castillo of Gainesville died Jan. 31 at Shands at the University of Florida following a brief illness. She was 77.

Mrs. Rowe-Castillo was born in Monteocha and moved to Gainesville 55 years ago.

She was a homemaker and a member of Old Jerusalem Baptist Church. She attended the public schools in Alachua County.

Survivors include daughters Lucille Godbolt, Jacquelyn Cunningham, Brenda Warren, Terry Glover and Cynthia Grimmage, all of Gainesville, and Lola Cohens-Ashley of Aberdeen, Md.; sisters Annie Bell Hill of Monteocha and Willene Griffin of Starke; 13 grandchildren and a great- grandchild.

Lester E. Hatton Jr.

STEINHATCHEE - Lester E. Hatton Jr. died Tuesday at his residence. He was 70.

Mr. Hatton moved to Steinhatchee from Moore Haven in 1994.

He was a retired biologist, a university professor and a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hatton of Steinhatchee; a son, David Martin Hatton of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter, Patricia Lee Beckwith of Mundo, S.D.; stepsons Steve M. Farmer of Orlando and Thomas N. Farmer of Tampa; stepdaughters Mary Ann Eckert of Orlando and Linda Louise Talamas of Deltona; and two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
