George Mack Jr.

ALACHUA -- George "Dubb" Mack Jr., a lifelong resident of Alachua, died Nov. 11 at North Florida Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 71.

Mr. Mack worked as a mechanic for Ennis Ford Co. for more than 20 years.

He was a member of Old Shilo Baptist Church in Alachua.

Survivors include his companion, Lucretia Kemp of Alachua; four daughters, Joann MaHamery of High Springs, Shirley Mack of Alachua, Geraldine Tyson of High Springs and Brenda Wesley of Fort White; two sons, George Mack III of Fresno, Calif., and Richard Mack of Gainesville; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Leroy McClellon

LACROSSE -- Leroy McClellon of LaCrosse died Nov. 10 at Shands at AGH after an extended illness. He was 81.

Mr. McClellon was born in Providence and moved to LaCrosse from Jacksonville a year ago.

He was a retired plumber and a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include his caregiver and niece, Ella Fulcher of LaCrosse; and two sisters-in-law, Phyliss McClellon of LaCrosse and Dora McClellon of Alachua.

Elizabeth Stevenson

MICANOPY -- Elizabeth Stevenson of Micanopy died Tuesday at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Gainesville after an extended illness. She was 83.

Mrs. Stevenson was born in Otter Creek and moved to Micanopy in 1948.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Alan Stevenson.

Survivors include an adopted daughter, Marie Vivian Morris of Micanopy; two sisters, Elouise Isiah of Miami and Bertha Mae Lewis of Bronson; and three brothers, Freddie Lee Robinson Sr. of Micanopy, Willie James Robinson of Gainesville and Isiah Robinson of Umatilla.

Causey Mattox Jr.

Causey Mattox Jr. of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida after an extended illness. He was 64.

Mr. Mattox was born in Lakeland, Ga., and moved to Gainesville from Trenton 39 years ago.

He is survived by a sister, Pauline Williams of Gainesville; and two brothers, Joe Mattox of Gainesville and Leon Mattox of Ocala.

Margaret Eily McKey Pierson

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Margaret Eily McKey Pierson of Columbus, Ohio, died Sunday at West Minister-Thurber Retirement Community in Columbus. She was 91.

Mrs. Pierson was born in Chicago and moved to Gainesville from New York in 1979, before moving to Columbus three years ago.

She was a homemaker and a member of the board of directors of the Gainesville Community Playhouse.

She was a member of the Gainesville Woman's Club, the Gainesville Garden Club and the League of Women Voters.

Mrs. Pierson was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, first ward.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George Arthur Pierson Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosalind Pierson of Columbus; a son, Dr. K. Kendall Pierson of Gainesville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the Gainesville Community Playhouse Building Fund.

Avaree Johnson Spurlin

Avaree Johnson Spurlin of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH. She was 76.

Mrs. Spurlin was born in Saluda, N.C., and moved to Gainesville in 1948.

She was a homemaker and a Protestant.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Charles Hubert Spurlin of Gainesville; a daughter, Judy S. Davis of Key West; three sisters, Myrtle Caswell of Gainesville, Jean Lindsey of Graham and Jessie Hayes of Spartanburg, S.C.; and two brothers, Robert H. Johnson of Archer and Edward Johnson of Waldo.

Olvena Maine Torres

BRONSON -- Olvena Maine Torres of Bronson died Wednesday at North Florida Special Care Center. She was 92.

Mrs. Torres was born in Los Angeles and moved to Bronson from Islamorada Key in 1976.

She was a homemaker and an employee of the Theater of the Sea in Islamorada Key for many years.

She was a Methodist.

Mrs. Torres was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Torres.

Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Conteras of Los Angeles; a son, Kenneth A. Whitman of Bronson; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Shirley Yvonne Brown

STARKE -- Shirley Yvonne Brown died Monday at her home in Starke. She was 74.

She was born in Okahumpka and moved to Starke in her early childhood.

She received her education through the Bradford County school system.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the Bradford Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ancel O. Brown of Starke; two daughters, Pamela Pavlica of Clearwater and Jeanne MacFarlane of Austin, Texas; two sons, John Pollet of Kissimmee and James Pollet of Apopka; a stepson, Don Shytle of Oklahoma City; a brother, Leaton Morgan Jr. of Starke; 10 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Yoland E. Buckhalter

HAWTHORNE -- Yoland E. Buckhalter died Tuesday at her residence in Hawthorne. She was 89.

She was born in Dixie County and moved to Hawthorne from Gainesville in June.

She was a school teacher and a member of the Retired Teacher's Association.

Mrs. Buckhalter was a charter member of McCall's Chapel Methodist Church in Bradford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Buckhalter Sr.; and two sons, William C. Buckhalter Jr. and Raymond W. Buckhalter.

Survivors include two sons, John S. Buckhalter of Gainesville and James L. Buckhalter of Hawthorne; a sister, Jean Ergle of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.

Roberta Rhyne Cantrell

Roberta Rhyne Cantrell of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. She was 78.

She was born in Coahoma, Miss., and graduated from Florida State College for Women.

She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, the Gainesville Golf and Country Club, the Heritage Club, the Gainesville Women's Club, the Gainesville Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames.

She worked as a volunteer at Shands at the University of Florida. She also served the community as a volunteer through the St. Elizabeth's Circle of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Mrs. Cantrell was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Fred Hilton Cantrell.

Survivors include a daughter, Clarkson Cantrell of Gainesville; two sons, Heyward M. Cantrell of Jacksonville and Fred. H. Cantrell Jr. of Gainesville; and four grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Hospice of North Central Florida, the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church or the American Cancer Society.

Alton Charles Carlton

Alton Charles Carlton of Gainesville died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 77.

He was born in Cypress and moved to Gainesville from Grand Ridge in 1947.

Mr. Carlton served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a crew chief aboard a B-17. He was a retired letter carrier for the Gainesville area.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 41 F & AM in Gainesville.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Virgie E. Carlton.

Survivors include his fiancee, Doris Booth of Gainesville; two sons, Charles Carlton of Raleigh, N.C., and Gary E. Carlton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
