Frank L. Whitman
INTERLACHEN -- Frank L. Whitman of Interlachen died Friday at his home after a long illness. He was 81.
Mr. Whitman was born in New York City. He lived in west Putnam County for the past 19 years, moving to the area from Miami. He had worked as a chef at many restaurants on the East Coast, including the Belleview Stratford in Philadelphia and the Fountainbleu in Miami Beach.
In 1980, he retired from the city of Miami where he worked as a bus supervisor for 12 years. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of the St. John Catholic Church in Interlachen and a 4th-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Woodworth-Webb Post 293 of the American Legion in Interlachen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances B. Whitman.
Survivors include his three sons, John Whitman of Interlachen, James Whitman of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Richard Whitman of Bronson; and four grandchildren.
R. Ken Boykin
LAKELAND -- R. Ken Boykin of Lakeland died Wednesday at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale. He was 65.
Mr. Boykin was a pest control operator. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was born in Catchings, Miss., and moved from Vicksburg, Miss., to Lakeland 50 years ago.
Mr. Boykin was a Mason and a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the American Legion, Scottish Rite and the Lakeland Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jacque McPhail Boykin of Lakeland; a daughter, Kennette Boykin Hayter of Gainesville; a son, Michael W. Boykin of Lake City; three brothers; a sister; and five grandchildren.
Francene J. Frazier
ALACHUA -- Francene J. Frazier of Alachua died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 69.
Mrs. Frazier was a retired teacher.
She was a lifelong resident of Alachua.
Mrs. Frazier received a masters degree from Bethune Cookman College and a specialist degree from the University of South Florida.
She was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, Lily White Lodge and Paradise United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, the Administrative Council, the Pastor Parrish Relations Committee and the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Willie Frazier of Alachua; a daughter, Debra Frazier Sermons of Ballwin, Mo.; three sisters, Mayola J. Brown of Baltimore, Eunyta J. Simmons of Gainesville and Leoris J. Richardson of Alachua; three grandchildren; and one great- grandchild.
Annie Lee Brown Gandy
Annie Lee Brown Gandy of Gainesville died Aug. 4 at Shands at AGH after a long illness. She was 59.
Mrs. Gandy was a retired custodian for Shands at the University of Florida.
She was born in Jasper and moved from Jennings to Gainesville 30 years ago.
Mrs. Gandy was a member of Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, where she was training to become a deaconess and was a member of the choir and the mission society.
Survivors include four daughters, Orangejunella Drew, Gloria Gandy, Lula Steward and Brenda Gandy, all of Gainesville; five sons, J.C. Gandy III, Bobby Gandy, Homer Gandy, William Gandy and Collins Gandy, all of Gainesville; six sisters, Mary L. Ware, Juanita Grant, Catherine Brister, Lula McCray and Annie Brown, all of Gainesville, and Mary E. Strawder of Tampa; a brother, L.C. Strawder of Jennings; 16 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
William Allen Hilleary
MICANOPY -- William Allen Hilleary of Micanopy died Tuesday Shands at AGH in Gainesville. He was 86.
Mr. Hilleary was a house painter.
He was a lifelong resident of Micanopy.
He was a Presbyterian.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Preston "Bootsie" Hilleary of Micanopy; three daughters, Karen Tompkins of Yulee, Barbara Wentzel of Brooksville and Suzan Underwood of LaCrosse; a son, Billy Hilleary of Grove Park; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth Hunter
Elizabeth Hunter of Gainesville died Aug. 3 at Hospice. She was 42.
Mrs. Hunter was employed at a dry cleaning company.
She was born in Miami and moved from Miami to Gainesville five years ago.
Mrs. Hunter was a member of Compassionate Outreach.
Survivors include a son, Donnie Hunter of Gainesville; five daughters, Lequisha Walker, Crystal Hunter, Victoria Hunter, Sharell Davis and Shawann Davis, all of Gainesville; her mother, Margaret Hunter of Gainesville; her father, Solomon Hunter of Miami; four brothers, Jeffrey Hunter of Atlanta, Nathaniel Hunter of Riverfall, Wis., James Hunter of Gainesville and Esco Hunter of Miami; five sisters, Shirley Billue of West Palm Beach, Fannie Mae Norman of Gainesville, Jeanette Hunter, Poncilla Hunter and Carolyn Hunter, all of Miami; and her maternal grandmother, Mable Norman of Gainesville.
Maggie Houston
Maggie Houston of Gainesville died Saturday at her home after a long illness. She was 87.
Mrs. Houston was a homemaker.
She was born in Douglas, Ga., and moved from Greenville to Gainesville eight years ago.
Mrs. Houston was a member of Wigginville Baptist Church in Madison County and attended Springhill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Bertha Alexander of Pinetta, Jimmie Lee Smith of Pensacola and Ida Mae Smith of Gainesville; two sons, Allen Houston of Gainesville and Ernest Houston of Rochester, N.Y.; 41 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 10 great- great-grandchildren.
Alfred Colquitt Jones
LAKE CITY -- Alfred Colquitt Jones of Lake City died Tuesday at Shands at Lake Shore after a long illness. He was 70.
Mr. Jones was a farmer and a former board member of Columbia County Farm Bureau and of Goldkist, now Southern States Cooperative.
He was a lifelong resident of Lake City. He graduated from Columbia High School and later received an honorary degree from Future Farmers of America.
Mr. Jones was a member of Columbia County Cattleman's Association and was awarded Cattleman of the Year in 1971. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jones of Lake City; two sons, Richard Jones and Randy Jones, both of Lake City; a brother, Frank Jones of Lake City; and three grandsons.
Rudolph Andrew Manning
CROSS CITY -- Rudolph Andrew Manning of Cross City died Monday at his home. He was 74.
Mr. Manning was employed in construction. He also had served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force.
He was born in St. Louis and moved from Dade City to Cross City 10 years ago.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Manning of New York City; and three sisters, Marjorie Akin of Gibsonton, Louise Miranda of Tampa and Ida Mae Evans of Plant City.
Alfonsina Lorenzi
Alfonsina Lorenzi of Gainesville died Tuesday at her home. She was 35.
Miss Lorenzi was a graduate student studying Spanish and Latin American literature at the University of Florida.
She was born in Malonno, Italy, and moved from Malonno to Gainesville five years ago. She attended St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Survivors include her mother, Ida Calzaferri of Malonno; a brother, Luigino Lorenzi of Malonno; and a sister, Ester Lorenzi Taboni of Malonno.
Wylene Sanders
CHIEFLAND -- Wylene Sanders of Chiefland died Saturday at her home. She was 65.
Mrs. Sanders was a homemaker.
She was born in Bronson and was a lifelong resident of the Levy County area.
Mrs. Sanders was a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin Sanders.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Thomas of Trenton and Nora Sanders of South Carolina; two sisters, Bernadine Gent and Bernice Mitchem, both of Chiefland; three brothers, James Jackson and Lawrence Jenkins, both of Chiefland, and Eddie Jackson of Gainesville; and one grandson.
