Evelyn R. Anderson

Evelyn R. Anderson of Gainesville died Saturday in Atlanta. She was 89.

She was born in Lyman, Miss., and was a legal secretary. She volunteered at the Arthritis Foundation and Gainesville's local American Heart Association. She was involved at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one nephew and two nieces.

Veda Bullock Bell

Veda Bullock Bell of Gainesville died Monday at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Punta Gorda. She was 85.

Mrs. Bell was born in Holmes County and moved to Gainesville in 1939. She was retired from the University of Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Ernest W. Bell Jr. of Punta Gorda; two sisters, Vivian Bradley of Dowling Park and Hazel Kurtz of Conyers, Ga.; and two grandsons, Ernest W. Bell III of Denton, Texas and William M. Bell of Washington, D.C.

Hazel J. Bridges

Hazel J. Bridges of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Bridges was born in Ocala and was a beautician. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ocala.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Bridges, and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Carson.

Survivors include three sons, Ernest W. "Bud" Bridges Jr. of Gainesville, the Rev. Robert T. Bridges of Windermere and William T. Bridges of Ocala; a sister, Claire Steele of Ocala; a brother, Claude Jennings of Ocala; six grandchildren, and three great- grandchildren.

Delbert M. Cushing

Delbert M. Cushing of Gainesville died Monday at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was 85.

Mr. Cushing moved to Gainesville in 1978 from Potomac, Md. He was born in Spokane, Wash. He was a retired finance officer with the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of San Francisco.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Cushing of Gainesville; three daughters, Elaine Foster Schert of Gainesville, Andrea Linda Swisher of West Palm Beach and Diana Louise Ash of Gainesville; and six grandchildren.

Reatha Flecker

CHIEFLAND -- Reatha Flecker of Chiefland died at North Florida Hospice House in Gainesville.

Mrs. Flecker was born in Bethlehem, Ind., and moved to Chiefland from St. Petersburg in 1973. She managed the Chiefland Golf and Country Club for 24 years. She loved golf, fishing and the Gators.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Flecker, and her daughter, Cyd Allen.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tom Sparks of Bronson; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Donna Flecker of Chiefland; four sisters, Wanda Baldwin of Vincennes, Ind., Margaret Bacci of Louisville, Ky., Janet Galbreath of Green Acres, Wash., and Jerry Tully of Jeffersonville, Ind.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Vaughn D. Hall

MCINTOSH -- Vaughn D. Hall of McIntosh died Saturday in Gainesville. He was 69.

Mr. Hall was born in Bar Mills, Maine. He was a retired plumber/pipe fitter at Walt Disney World.

Survivors include his wife, Doris J. Hall of McIntosh; three sons, David Hall and Daniel Hall, both of Melrose, and Dean Hall of Tampa; a daughter, Diane Hall of Gainesville; a sister, Virginia Falk of Conway, Ark.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Joseph McAnally

Robert Joseph McAnally of Gainesville died Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 35.

Mr. McAnally was born in Lakeland and was a laborer. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Marie McAnally of Gainesville; a brother, Carl F. Bowles of Gainesville; two sisters, Jeannine Thompson and Dianna Shannon, both of Gainesville; a fiancee, Mia Stringer, and her son, Justin Stringer, both of Gainesville.

Evalyn Bancroft Miller

CEDAR KEY -- Evalyn Bancroft Miller of Cedar Key died Sunday at her home. She was 84.

Mrs. Miller was from St. Charles, Ill. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Women Descendants of Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America and the Daughters of American Colonists. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Geneva, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Miller of St. Charles; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Avolio of Geneva; three sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Peters; two daughters, Linda J. "Gypsy" Miller of Cedar Key and Mary Ann Miller of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Warren V. Smith

Sen. Smith's father dies at age 75

ALACHUA - Warren V. Smith of Alachua, the father of state Sen. Rod Smith, died Friday at North Regional Medical Center. He was 75.

Mr. Smith was born in Bernice, Okla. and moved to Alachua from Boynton Beach in 1972.

He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of the Alachua County Cattleman's Association and the Florida Farm Bureau, and he was a past president of Hillsborough Farmers Co-op. He served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Survivors include his wife, Elda Lee Smith of Alachua; his son, Rod Smith of Alachua; a daughter-in-law, DeeDee Cain Smith; four brothers, Marvin Smith of Hot Springs, Ark.; Wayne Smith, Jay Smith and Bob Smith, all of Tulsa, Okla; and three grandchildren, Alison Painter, Jesse Warren Smith and Dylan Harding Smith.

Addie Miles Ammons

ROCHELLE - Addie Miles Ammons of the Rochelle community died Wednesday at Shands at Alachua General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 93.

She was born in Green Cove Springs and moved to Rochelle in the 1930s. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Third Bethel Baptist Church, where she was formerly a member of the choir and the usher board.

She was a former member of the Southside Gospel Choir and Pallbearers Lodge No. 82.

Survivors include her godson, Tony A. Ivey and his wife, Mary, of Gainesville; a niece, Frances Scrivens; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Mildred Toney Gray

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Mildred Toney Gray of Little Rock, Ark., died Wednesday. She was 79.

Mrs. Gray was born in Crossett Camp, Ark., and was the wife of John Gray, former director of the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida. Services will be held at Pinecrest cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday in Little Rock, Ark.

Alean R. Mills

MORRISTON - Alean R. Mills of Morriston died Wednesday in Morriston. He was 85.

Ms. Mills was born in Raiford and lived in Morriston for 63 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Morriston Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Tommy Carroll Mills of Ocala; three daughters, Venice Ann Ergle of Ocala; Connie Alean Massicot of Breaux Bridges, La., Cynthia Gail Smith of Williston; a sister, Almeta Dougan of Ocala; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Clara B. Williams

HAWTHORNE - Clara B. Williams of Hawthorne died Sunday at North Florida Rehabilitation and Specialty Care Center after a brief illness. She was 82.

Mrs. Williams lived in Hawthorne her entire life and was a homemaker. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Hawthorne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Williams.

Survivors include six daughters, Janette Williams, Jeanette Gant, and Leola Hutchinson, all of Hawthorne, Clara Annette Beard of Sparr, Emma Brooks of Grove Park and Roseanne Williams of Alachua; four sons, John Jenkins of Archer, Wyley Williams and Willie Williams, both of Hawthorne, and Tommy Williams of Brunswick, Ga.; two sisters, Martha Bennett of Hawthorne and Darlene Williams, both of West Palm Beach; 49 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

James Frederick Cross I

OLD TOWN -- James Frederick Cross I of Old Town died Saturday. He was 55.

Mr. Cross was a native of Uniontown, Ohio, and moved to Old Town in 1992 from Riverview. He was a retired truck driver and boilermaker. He was a member of the House of Prayer Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Cross of Old Town; two sons, James F. Cross II of Houston and Joey L. Cross of Riverview; a daughter, Julie B. Cross of Chiefland; two brothers, Louis Cross of Hampton, Va., and David Cross of Holland, Mich.; two step-siblings, Donna McKinney of Shacklsord, Va., and Peter Dorn of Yorktown, Va.; and five grandchildren, James Cross III, Kara Cross, Ashley Cross, Joey Cross II and Terry Cross.

Amos George

ORLANDO -- Amos George of Orlando died Wednesday in Orlando. He was 75.

The Gainesville native was a landscaper and a Baptist.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Mable George of Orlando. Local survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Lundy and Margaret G. Vinson, both of Gainesville; and three brothers, Willie George of Bronson and Major George and Elizah George, both of Gainesville.
