Dorothy Fletcher Cooper

DOWLING PARK -- Dorothy Fletcher Cooper died Saturday in Dowling Park following an extended illness. She was 93.

The Live Oak native graduated from Suwannee High School in 1923. She held degrees from Florida Woman's College, the University of Florida and Tampa Business College.

She was an office manager at her father's livestock auction markets in Suwannee, Gainesville and Valdosta. She also was the co-owner of the Suwannee Paper Co.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Cooper enjoyed gardening, exercising and playing bridge.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Josephine Gay of Dowling Park.

Dick Johns

Dick "Granddaddy" Johns of Bradenton died Aug. 8. He was 93.

The former Melrose resident was a Protestant.

Local survivors include a daughter, Jean Stevens of Hawthorne.

Harold L. Knowles

Harold L. Knowles, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, died Sunday in Gainesville. He was 95.

The Chicago native moved to Kansas to complete his graduate work at the University of Kansas. He moved to Gainesville in 1931 when he accepted a teaching position in the department of physics at the University of Florida. In 1954, he was named chairman of the department of physical sciences.

During World War II, he was the director of the Sferics Direction Finder program in the Engineering and Industrial Experiment Station. He was a charter member of the local chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He also was a member of the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy White Knowles.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn K. Eubank of Maitland; a sister, Vida Hodgen of Dover, Okla.; and a grandson.

Katherine Lanier

Katherine Lanier died Sunday at her residence in Ocala. She was 46.

Mrs. Lanier worked at the Charlie Horse Restaurant in Ocala and attended the Lake Area Bible Church in Melrose.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Lanier Jr. of Ocala; and two grandchildren living in Melrose.

Mildred Diantha Larcomb

Mildred Diantha Larcomb of Gainesville died Sunday. She was 94.

Mrs. Larcomb was born in Upper Sanducky, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville from Punta Gorda in 1990.

She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary D. Phillips of Gainesville; a son, Joseph Edwin Larcomb of Xenia, Ohio; and three granddaughters.

Evelyn P. Mangum

PALATKA -- Evelyn P. "Pat" Mangum died Sunday at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Mangum was born in St. Paul, Minn., and moved to Palatka from Archer in 1945.

She was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she once served as church pianist. She also taught piano lessons in Archer for many years.

She worked at J.C. Penney Co., Independent Life Co. and Taylor's Ace Hardware.

Mrs. Mangum was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne P. Mangum Sr.

Survivors include a son, Wayne P. "Buddy" Mangum Jr. of Palatka; a daughter, Sharon Harper of St. Augustine; a brother, George Petricka of Gainesville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Warren O. Stanley

BELL -- Warren O. Stanley died Thursday at his residence. He was 81.

Mr. Stanley was born in Mexia, Texas, and moved to Bell 30 years ago.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a radio controller after 20 years of service.

He was a Methodist and a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, Nathalie Stanley.

He has no immediate survivors.

Kate Leigh Stephens

HIGH SPRINGS -- Kate Leigh Stephens, the 20-month-old child of Kelley and Rai Stephens of High Springs, died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida following a brief illness.

Kate was a Methodist.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by brothers, Michael Ray and Dustin Stephens of High Springs; her maternal grandparents, Orrin and Diane Cope of High Springs; her paternal grandmother, Ann Bareham ; and her maternal great-grandparents, Fred Edney and Doris Cope.

Louise Kingery Thornton

Louise Kingery Thornton of Venice died Sunday. She was 85.

The former Gainesville resident worked in an agriculture chemical supply laboratory and was a homemaker.

She has no local survivors.

Geneva Willis

STEINHATCHEE -- Geneva Willis died Sunday in Gainesville. She was 75.

Mrs. Willis was a longtime resident of Steinhatchee and a retired tower operator with the Division of Forestry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Terrence V. Willis.

Survivors include sons Mitchell Willis of Cross City and Michael and John Willis, both of Steinhatchee; a daughter, Sharon Whiddon of Steinhatchee; a brother, Walter Howell Jr. of Steinhatchee; sisters Janett Henry, Betty Mae Burke and Vaughn Winters, all of Perry, Juanette Williams of Cross City and Sylvia Ann Williams of Madison; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jane Elizabeth Huss Hammett

NEWBERRY - Jane Elizabeth Huss Hammett died Friday at Shands at AGH following a brief illness. She was 73.

Mrs. Hammett was born in Lincoln County, N.C., and moved to Newberry in 1954 from Aiken, S.C. She was a nurse at Shands at the University of Florida and a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse Lee Hammett; daughter Sandra Jean Haufler of Gainesville; brothers Reid Huss of Cherryville, N.C., and Lee Huss of Houston, Texas; sisters Lorene Hamrick of Shelby, N.C., and Jean Hoyle of Vale, N.C.; and one granddaughter.
