Pearl Jeffcoat Spell

Pearl Jeffcoat Spell of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. She was 90.

The Dothan, Ala., native was a homemaker and a member of North Central Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Spell. She has no immediate survivors.

Charles E. Walker

Charles E. Walker of Gainesville died Monday at The Oaks Residential and Rehabilitation Center. He was 78.

Mr. Walker was born in Winter Garden and raised in Gainesville. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew with the 8th Air Force out of Kimbolton, England, as a B-17 pilot for the 379th Bomb Group. In November 1944, his plane was shot down and he spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in Germany. He later saw service during the Berlin airlift and in the Pacific with the Strategic Air Command. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He graduated from the University of Florida with a master's degree in agriculture and operated a cattle ranch in Madison for many years.

Survivors include a brother, Jack Frazier Thomas of Boca Raton.

Patrick O'Dell Whalen

Patrick O'Dell Whalen of Alexandria, Va., died Thursday in Virginia. He was 36.

Mr. Whalen was born in San Diego and lived in Gainesville for 10 years before moving to Alexandria in January.

He was a science expert for a law firm.

He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in political science, a master's degree in chemistry, and doctorates in chemistry and in microbiology. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Catholic Young Peoples Group.

Survivors include his mother, Norma J. Whalen of Leesburg; brothers Tim Whalen of Leesburg and Kevin Whalen of Olympia, Wash.; sisters Anna Whalen of Los Angeles and Emily Wells of Westlake Village, Calif.; and his grandmother, Kay Betts of Albuquerque, N.M.

Jack Robert Wilson Sr.

Jack Robert Wilson Sr. died Friday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 78.

Mr. Wilson was born in Cleveland and moved to Gainesville from St. Petersburg 15 years ago.

He began his career working as a milk man. He was one of the last delivery men to use a horse and wagon to deliver milk door-to-door. He received the Purple Heart for his service as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for four months. He retired as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of Oak Park Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Harrington Wilson.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Maier Wilson of Gainesville; a son, Jack Wilson Jr. of Altamonte Springs; daughters Billie Kissire of Montrose, Colo., and Shelley Cary of Lewisburg, Tenn.; a sister, Jane Russell Eden of Columbia Station, Ohio; three half-brothers Bill, Tom and John Eden, all of Ohio; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Eloise Rogers

Woman of distinction dies at 82

Eloise Rogers of Gainesville died Monday at Shands at AGH. She was 82.

Mrs. Rogers, who was awarded the 1992 Woman of Distinction from Santa Fe Community College, formerly taught home economics at Westwood Middle School in Gainesville.

Born in Marshall, N.C., she moved from Hickory, N.C., to Gainesville 38 years ago. She received a master's degree from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale.

Mrs. Rogers was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Shands AGH Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Alachua County Retired Educators Association, American Association of Retired Persons and American Association of University Women. She received the 2000 Volunteer of the Year award from the Florida Retired Educators Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Dalton Rogers.

Survivors include daughters Frances Hopson of Richmond, Calif., and Margaret Rogers of Washington, D.C.; sons David Rogers of Central Lake, Mich., and Marvin Rogers and Albert Rogers, both of Gainesville; sisters Jean Kilmer of McLean, Va., and Lena Wallin of Cornelius, N.C.; brothers Louie Zimmerman of Marshall, N.C., and John Zimmerman of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Earl Blair Bartholomew

HAWTHORNE - Earl Blair Bartholomew of Hawthorne died Monday at his home. He was 77.

Born in Champion, Pa., Mr. Bartholomew moved to Gainesville from Butler, Pa., in 1978. He moved to Hawthorne in 1991. He was the co-owner of the Anchor Lodge in Gainesville.

A chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II and the Korean War. He liked fishing, boating and swimming. He was a Lutheran.

He was preceded in death by his son Clifford B. Bartholomew.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Allore Bartholomew of Alachua; a daughter, Melissa Ann Osche of Butler, Pa.; sons David B. Bartholomew of Atlanta and Jonathan B. Bartholomew, Christopher B. Bartholomew and Andrew B. Bartholomew, all of Gainesville; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Leroy Mosley

Leroy Mosley of Terris, Calif., died unexpectedly Oct. 17 in Terris. He was 60.

Mr. Mosley served in the U.S. Air Force. He was born in Gainesville and graduated from Lincoln High School.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Mosley of Terris; a son, Rod Mosley of California; a daughter, Erica Baker of Fort Lauderdale; his mother, Unceal Mosley of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Dixon of Bradenton; and a brother, Larry Mosley of Tallahassee.

Maxie M. Perkins

NEWBERRY - Maxie M. Perkins of Newberry died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 83.

A native of Newberry, Mr. Perkins worked for the city of Newberry for 24 years. During that time, he served as an electrician, law enforcement officer, assistant superintendent of the Utilities Department and manager of plant operations. After retiring, he served on the City Council for two years. He was a deacon at Bethel Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Hasan of Newberry; a son, Travis Warmack of Newberry; and eight grandchildren.

James Wilburn Taylor

ALACHUA - James Wilburn Taylor died Wednesday at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. He was 75.

Mr. Taylor was born in Bainbridge, Ga., and moved to Alachua from Macon, Ga., in 1985.

He was retired from Gravely Lawn Equipment. He was Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Taylor of Alachua; a stepson, Wayne Walicek of Warner Robbins, Ga.; and a brother, Dick Taylor.

John Lester Waldron

ALACHUA - John Lester Waldron died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 65.

Mr. Waldron was born in Blackshear, Ga. A retired brick mason, he moved to Alachua 20 years ago.

Mr. Waldron served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Blackshear.

Mr. Waldron was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Waldron.

He is survived by daughters Kristie Waldron of Alachua, and Becky Barber and Nancy Herndon of Waycross, Ga.; sisters Mary Lou Spires of Waycross and Lillie Mae Christner of Jacksonville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Margaret Louise Robertson Caton

Margaret Louise Robertson Caton died Sept. 27 in Newark, Del. She was 94.

Mrs. Caton was a member of the Newark United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Caton of Gainesville; a daughter, Nancy Caton Everest of Ocala; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Eva A. Collis

Eva A. Collis of Gainesville died Tuesday at Palm Garden Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Collis was born in Utica, N.Y., and moved to Gainesville in 1981.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramsay A. Collis.

Survivors include sons Philip S. Collis of Gainesville and Dennis R. Collis of Daytona Beach; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
