Rosa Lee Overstreet

CROSS CITY -- Rosa Lee "Nanny" Overstreet, a lifelong resident of Cross City, died Wednesday at the Cross City Rehabilitation Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Overstreet was a retired cook and a Baptist.

Survivors include her goddaughter and caretaker, Susan Wheeler of Cross City; and a granddaughter, Wyteria Wilbert of Belle Glade.

Elizabeth A. Riggins

BROOKER -- Elizabeth A. Riggins, a lifelong resident of Brooker, died Monday at Shands at Starke following a brief illness. She was 51.

She was a human-services worker, a graduate of R.J.E. High School and a member of Greater Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Mattie Davis of Palatka, Marian Smith of Gainesville and Willie Mae Goldwire of Weirsdale; and three brothers, Elder Lawson Foster of Palatka, Gene Foster of Lake City and Carl Foster of Brooker.

Gary West Trimble

Gary West "Trainman" Trimble of Dunnellon was killed Wednesday in an automobile accident. He was 65.

Mr. Trimble was retired from Tampa Electric Co. after 32 years as a watch engineer.

He was born in Niagara, cq N.D., and moved from Tampa to Dunnellon 10 years ago.

Mr. Trimble was a Baptist.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being a handyman.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Trimble of Dunnellon; three sons, Doug Trimble of Wesley Chapel, and Petiecq Favatacq and Wayne Favata, both of Tampa; four daughters, Kim Trimble of Plant City, Sherry Sanders of Seffner and Yolanda Gufford and Deanna Favata, both of Tampa; a sister, Dawn Smith of Tampa; and 18 grandchildren.

Mamie Howard Daniels

LAKE BUTLER - Mamie Howard Daniels of Lake Butler died Friday in the Apostolic Christian Home in Eureka, Ill., after an extended illness.

She was 85.

Mrs. Daniels was born in Lake Butler, and was the daughter of J.S. Howard Sr. and Ethel Slone Howard. She was the fifth of seven children.

She studied music at the Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Ill., worked in an orphanage in South Carolina, served on numerous committees for the American Baptist Church Camp, was a piano teacher and was a member of Harmony Freewill Baptist Church in Lake Butler.

Survivors include one daughter, Anne Rebecca Ellenwood of Peoria, Ill.; one brother, Glen S. Howard of Lake Butler; three grandchildren, Kimberly Methzard, Laura McCully and Nicholas Ellenwood, all of Peoria; and one great-grandson, Matthew Methzard of Peoria.

Alma Johnson Forsythe

STARKE - Alma Johnson Forsythe of Starke died Saturday at her daughter's home following an extended illness.

She was 82.

Mrs. Forsythe was born in Alapaha, Ga., and moved to Starke from Hampton 34 years ago. She attended school in Nashville, Ga., and was a retired poultry farmer and a member of Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ruth Davis of Cocoa, Barbara Dawes of Jacksonville, and Patricia Ann Sova of Starke; one son, Thomas Edwin Johnson of Apple Valley, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Arlene Bodreaux of Tennessee, Brenda Jones of Theressa, and Patsy Anderson of Jacksonville; one sister, Ida Mae Powell of Tifton, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.

Ruth E. Hayes

Ruth E. Hayes of Gainesville died Saturday in Gainesville. She was 87.

Mrs. Hayes was born in Baltimore and raised her family in Rockville, Md. She moved to Gainesville 12 years ago. She was a Realtor and a member of the Secular Franciscans and Holy Faith Catholic Church.

Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice "Mortie" Hayes. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo Hayes of Gainesville, Maureen Duffy of Rockville and Raedell Crown of Surfside Beach, S.C.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Mae Simmons

MICANOPY - Dorothy Mae Simmons of Micanopy died Saturday. She was 71.

Mrs. Simmons was born in Micanopy and was a lifelong resident. She was a lunchroom manager for the Marion County school system. She was a Baptist and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra K. Simmons and Iris L. Moore of Micanopy; one son B.J. Simmons of Fries, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Edward Visscher

Ex-UF coach Visscher dies at 66

APOPKA -- Edward Visscher of Apopka, a retired Lutheran clergyman, educator and University of Florida interim head basketball coach, died Tuesday at Shands at UF after a brief illness. He was 66.

He served as executive director, teacher and basketball coach at Long Island Lutheran High School in New York, where he built a nationally recognized basketball powerhoure. Mr. Visscher moved his family to Gainesville in 1978 to become an assistant basketball coach at the University of Florida. He became interim head basketball coach 12 games into the 1979-80 season. The following year, he took over as executive director at Orlando Luther High School, where he coached the basketball team for six seasons.

After leaving Orlando, Mr. Visscher coached professional teams in Sweden, Denmark and Germany, and founded a company that provides international tours for sports teams in the United States and Europe.

In 1997, he served as part-time pastor ministering to the elderly for First Lutheran Church in Gainesville.

Survivors include his wife, E. Marie Visscher of Apopka; three daughters, Elise Wehmeier of Orland Park, Ill., and Rachel Maxwell and Christa Sheldon, both of Lexington, S.C.; two sons, Jonathan Visscher of Gainesville and David Visscher of Stockholm, Sweden; a stepbrother, Richard Runyan of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

Eunice Pauline Daniels Boswell

OCALA -- Eunice Pauline Daniels Boswell of Ocala died Tuesday at Ocala Regional Medical Center. She was 93.

She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., and moved to Ocala from Napa, Calif., several years ago.

Mrs. Boswell was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Margie Markham of Gainesville; a son, Gerald J. Boswell of Gainesville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Luz Maria Castro Ibarra

MEXICO CITY -- Luz Maria Castro Ibarra died unexpectedly Friday at her home in Mexico City. She was 54.

Mrs. Castro was born in Mexico City and spent much of her 28-year teaching career at Jorge Alacio Pérez.

She was a political activist and member of the Partido Revolucionario Democratico Committee (Revolutionary Democratic Party).

Mrs. Castro and her husband owned and operated several neighborhood grocery stores.

Survivors include her husband, Fernando Castro of Mexico City; two sons; and three daughters, including Nelly Sunderland of Gainesville.

Janet McArthur DeGrove

Janet McArthur DeGrove of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH. She was 75.

She was born in Detroit and moved to Gainesville in 1989.

Mrs. DeGrove served as a medical transcriber in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

She was a member and former president of P.E.O.

Mrs. DeGrove was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Leon DeGrove of Gainesville; two sons, Bruce D. DeGrove of Crawfordville and Paul J. DeGrove of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren; and a great- grandchild.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to any charity.

Maurice S. Ellsworth

HAWTHORNE -- Maurice S. "Moe" Ellsworth of Hawthorne died Sunday at Putnam Community Hospital in Palatka. He was 49.

He was born in Providence, R.I., and grew up in Warwick, R.I.

He worked at Renee's Restaurant in Orange Springs as a cook.

Survivors include his parents, Stephen and Janine Ellsworth of Warwick; two sons, Stephen Ellsworth and Scott Ellsworth, both of California; two sisters, Patricia Janowski of Coventry, R.I., and Barbara Jean Suggs of Providence; and a brother, Roy Ellsworth of Warwick.

Leona Bielling Holmes

TRENTON -- Leona Bielling Holmes of Trenton died Wednesday at the Ayers Health Center in Trenton after a long illness. She was 88.

She was a native of Union County, and she lived in Lake City for most of her life, before moving to Trenton four years ago.

Mrs. Holmes worked as a school teacher at Raiford Elementary in Union County, and later worked for Florida Power and Light Co. as a CPA.

In 1931, she received a teaching certificate from the University of Florida, and an accounting degree from Stetson University later in life.

She was a member of the Providence Village Baptist Church.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, George Jenner Holmes.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Sapp of Trenton; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
