Clarice Chard

Clarice Chard of Gainesville died July 19 at her daughter's residence in Gainesville following a five-year battle with cancer. She was 81.

Mrs. Chard was born in Cleveland and moved to Gainesville from Syracuse, N.Y., 10 years ago.

She was a supervisor with the Office of Navy Liaison for the Selective Service during World War II. She was an assistant director of the Office of Consumer Affairs for Onondaga County, N.Y., until her retirement in 1982.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Chard Pellicer of Gainesville; a son, Jeffrey Chard of New Hartford, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the Hospice of North Central Florida.

Thomas Leroy Folks

CHIEFLAND - Thomas Leroy Folks died Aug. 3 at his residence in Chiefland. He was 66.

Mr. Folks was born in Cedar Key and moved to Chiefland two years ago.

He was a commercial fisherman and a member of the Cedar Key Church of Christ.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his companion, Jannie Highley of Chiefland; and his sister, Irene Martingeau of Leesburg.

Lena P. Hudson

CHIEFLAND - Lena P. Hudson of Chiefland died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Hudson was born in Okaloosa County and moved to Chiefland as a young child.

She was a retired businesswoman. She and her late husband, Earl J. Hudson, owned and operated one of the first grocery stores in Chiefland.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she served as director of the Baptist Women and the Sunday school.

Survivors include a daughter, Earlene Smith of Chiefland; a son, James Rollin Hudson of Chiefland; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Paul Gaines

Paul Gaines died Wednesday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 83.

Mr. Gaines was born in Milwaukee and moved to Gainesville from Puerto Rico in 1981.

He was a retired metallurgist with Commonwealth Oil Corp. and a member of B'nai Israel.

He was a World War II veteran, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and a member of the University Golf Course and the Torch Club.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Gaines of Gainesville; three daughters, Deborah L. Monroe of Rye, N.Y., Robin L. Gaines of Falls Church, Va., and Judith L. Grosswald of Warminster, Pa.; a brother, Irving D. Gaines of Fox Point, Wis.; two sisters, Eva G. Prusow of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Vivian Tentoni of Holiday; and a grandchild.

Jack Parrish Gilland

Jack Parrish Gilland of West Palm Beach died Wednesday in Lantana. He was 74.

Mr. Gilland was born in Irondale, Ala., and moved to West Palm Beach from Waldo three years ago.

He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Alachua County Sheriff's Posse and a Protestant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen DeSha Gilland.

Survivors include two sons, Patrick Henry Gilland of West Palm Beach and Michael Howard Gilland of Apopka; a brother, William C. Gilland of Grove Park; and a grandchild.

Robert Benjamin Quirello

ARCHER - Robert Benjamin Quirello, the 4-month-old son of Crystal Dawn and John Robert Quirello of Archer, died Thursday in Gainesville.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Richard and Tammie Davis of Jacksonville; his paternal grandmother, Kathleen Morrison of Archer, his paternal grandparents, John and Sally Quirello of Orlando; his maternal great-grandparents, James and Wynonna Woodward of Jacksonville; and his maternal great-grandmother, Pluma Rose of Pikeville, Ky.

Robert Son Preston

Robert Son Preston of Denton, Md., died Wednesday in Denton. He was 86.

Mr. Preston was born in Monticello and moved to Denton in 1967.

He was a farmer and a minister.

Survivors include his wife, Novella Jackson Preston of Denton; three daughters, Sharon L. Johnson of Winter Haven, Mary L. Sewell of Lake Wales and Idella L. Anderson of Gainesville; a son, William W. Preston of Baltimore; three sisters, Anna Mae Brown Lane of Ocala, Minnie Preston Hall of Tallahassee and Anna Mae Smith of St. Petersburg; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Alice Mildred Sargent

TRENTON - Alice Mildred Sargent of Trenton died Wednesday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.

Mrs. Sargent was born in Westbrook, Maine, and moved to Trenton from Gainesville three years ago.

She retired from St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg in 1992. She was a Protestant and a former member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Rutitann Ross of Trenton and Barbara Louise Locke of Chiefland; and four sons, Kenneth John Sargent of Gales Ferry, Conn., Paul Dana Sargent of Ocala, James Cacord Sargent of Rye, N.H., and Harold Taylor Sargent III of Omaha, Neb.

Stephanie Taylor Williams

NEWBERRY - Stephanie Taylor Williams, a 13-year-old Newberry resident, died late Thursday at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh after complications developed following a second double-lung transplant there in December.

She had undergone a heart and double-lung transplant at the same hospital when she was 6 years old.

Stephanie was a seventh-grader who was being home-schooled.

She was born in Gainesville and she enjoyed music and playing softball.

Survivors include her father, Roddey Ellis Williams of Alachua; her mother, Kathy Ann Myers Williams of Newberry; three sisters, Erica B. Williams, Melissa Ann Williams and Katherine Eileen Williams, all of Newberry; her grandparents, Robert and Shirley Myers of Gainesville; and her great-grandmother, Eileen Reese of Garden Grove, Calif.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Helen V. Nicol

Helen V. Nicol of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH. She was 76.

Mrs. Nicol was a former employee of the federal government in Washington, D.C.

Born in Milwaukee, she moved from Carbondale, Ill., to Gainesville 34 years ago.

Mrs. Nicol was a member of the United Church of Gainesville.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, David Nicol of Gainesville; a daughter, Ruth N. Fox of Ormond Beach; a sister, Florence V. Lindsay of Mequon, Wis.; and two grandchildren.

Blake Eugene Bertie and Lane Michael Bertie

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Blake Eugene Bertie and Lane Michael Bertie, twin brothers from Keystone Heights, died Thursday. They were newborns.

Survivors include their parents, Mike and Crissy Bertie of Keystone Heights; maternal grandparents Gwen and Jamie Huggins of Cape Coral; paternal grandparents Ricky and Debra Bertie of Keystone Heights; and great-grandparents Anna Huggins of Orlando, Fay Griffin of Keystone Heights and Robert Thien of Jacksonville.

George Milton Bradley

FORT WHITE -- George Milton Bradley of Fort White died Saturday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville. He was 78.

Mr. Bradley was born in Fort White and returned there seven years ago from Gainesville. He was a salesman at Brasington Oldsmobile and Cadillac and a Coast Guard veteran of World War II who served in the North Atlantic campaign. He was a member and deacon of Elim Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Willene Bradley of Fort White; three sons, Mike Bradley and Ben Bradley, both of Jacksonville, and Mitt Bradley of Fort White; one daughter, Jane Walker of Atlanta, Ga.; one stepson, Joe Turner of Fairview, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Betty Hudspeth of Headland, Ala., and Debrah Strother of El Paso, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Hilma V. Durrance

CHIEFLAND -- Hilma V. Durrance of Chiefland died Sunday in Trenton. She was 82.

Mrs. Durrance was a lifelong resident of Chiefland, was a homemaker and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Chiefland.

Survivors include one son, Harold Durrance of Chiefland; one brother, Herbert Hair of Alachua; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
