Nicholson Furey

CHIEFLAND -- Nicholson Furey of Chiefland died Tuesday at Shands at AGH. He was 67.

A native of Alabama, Mr. Furey moved to Chiefland from St. Petersburg five years ago.

He was a truck driver and guard for Wells Fargo.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine, the Scottish Rites and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Clare M. Furey of Chiefland; a daughter, Jean Frankland of Seminole; a son, Calvin Cherry of Thomasville, Ga.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to the American Cancer Society or to the Diabetes Association.

Frances Jones Gibbs

Frances Jones Gibbs of Gainesville died Tuesday at Palm Garden of Gainesville. She was 81.

Mrs. Gibbs was born in Richland, Ga., and moved to Gainesville from Columbus, Ga., in 1982. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Gibbs Sr.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carole Gibbs and Jim Jean of Gainesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe B. and DeLane Gibbs Jr. of Durham, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Thelma A. Hubbard

Thelma A. Hubbard of Gainesville died Friday in Interlachen following a brief illness. She was 47.

Mrs. Hubbard was born in St. Augustine and moved to Gainesville from Interlachen 30 years ago.

She was a battery technician with Moltech Power Systems Inc. and a member of New Bethel A.M.E. Church of Interlachen.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Alta Mae Hubbard; and a brother, Emmette Perry.

Survivors include a son, Garien Banks of Gainesville; two sisters, Elvie Washington of St. Marys, Ga., and Carolyn Jenkins of Interlachen; and three brothers, James Taplis Jr. of Miami, Hilliard Hubbard of St. Marys and Lloyd Perry of Jacksonville.

James Calvin Johnson

James "Gopher" Calvin Johnson of Gainesville died Sunday at Shands at AGH. He was 55.

The Taft native moved to Gainesville from Micanopy in the early 1960s. He was a retired Gainesville Regional Transit System employee, where he was a union president.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Bartley Temple United Methodist Church, where he served as a choir member and trustee.

Survivors include three daughters, Kimberly K. Wright of Hawthorne, Robin L. Johnson of Tallahassee and Monica Johnson of Gainesville; four sisters, Lillie Mitchell, Mary Lynn, Esther Johnson and Eva Stephens, all of Gainesville; three brothers, Charles Hill, Michael Johnson and Eddie Johnson, all of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.

Harry Milton Losey

OLD TOWN -- Harry Milton Losey died Tuesday at his residence in Old Town. He was 86.

Mr. Losey was born in Kissimmee, and moved to Old Town from High Springs 14 years ago. He was a laborer.

Survivors include five daughters, Wilma Poole of Interlachen, Dora Robinson and Mildred Arnold, both of Fort Myers, Joyce Renfroe of Old Town and Laurice Losey of Blaine, Tenn.

Sherry Osteen

STARKE -- Sherry Osteen of Starke died Monday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. She was 39.

Ms. Osteen was a lifelong resident of Bradford County.

She was a Baptist and a cashier at the Food Lion in Starke.

Survivors include her fiance, Freddie Browning of Starke; a daughter, Crystal Osteen of Starke; four sons, Raymond Osteen, William Osteen, Freddie Osteen and Jerry Osteen, all of Starke; her mother, Marilyn Rhoden Parrish of Brooker; her father and stepmother, James A. and Linda Osteen Sr. of Burlington, N.C.; three sisters, Lynn Mullins of Burlington, N.C., Angie Osteen of Starke and Inez Young of Gainesville; three brothers, James Osteen Jr. of Starke, Jason Osteen of Burlington, N.C., and Buddy Parrish of Brooker; and a grandchild.

Lloyd Monroe Pate Jr.

ARCHER -- Lloyd Monroe Pate Jr. died Tuesday at his residence in Archer. He was 72.

Mr. Pate was born in Michigan and moved to Archer from St. Petersburg seven years ago. He was a retired salvage operator.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Louise A. Pate of Archer; three daughters, Lorra Ivie and Lorraine Hinton, both of Archer, and Lisa Crane of St. Petersburg; two sons, Lloyd "Skip" Pate of St. Petersburg and Leon Pate of Archer; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Freddie Sherman

Freddie Sherman of Daytona Beach died May 10 in Daytona Beach. He was 67.

The Williston native was a Methodist and a retired Division of Blind Services employee.

Local survivors include a daughter, Cathy Days of Gainesville.

Ralph Stewart

Ralph "Bear" Stewart of Gainesville died May 9 at Shands at AGH. He was 47.

The Sanderson native moved to Gainesville from Lake Butler in 1972. He was a retired Monterey Boats employee and a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran. He attended Green Pastures Ministries.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Harrison Stewart of Gainesville; his mother, Carrie P. Whitty-Stewart of Lake Butler; a stepdaughter, Tracey Harrison of Gainesville; four stepsons, Robert Reed, Stacey Harrison and Patrick Harrison, all of Gainesville, and Reginald Harrison of Atlanta; three sisters, Deloris Davis and Mary J. Green, both of Lake Butler, and Margaret Holmes of Fort Walton; a stepsister, Ruby Graham of Cross City; two brothers, Joe Davis of Cross City and Thomas J. Stewart of Lawtey; and nine grandchildren.

Nathaniel Williams Sr.

Nathaniel Williams Sr. of Gainesville died May 8 at Shands at AGH following a lingering illness. He was 74.

Mr. Williams was born in Santa Fe and moved to Gainesville from Pompano Beach in 1950. He was a retired machinist with Florida Rock Industries.

He was a member of Mount Zion Church of God in Unity, where he was a former choir member and usher. At the time of his death, he was serving as a deacon and as president of the Usher Board of the Churches of God in Unity.

Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Wilson-Williams of Gainesville; two daughters, Arizona W. Haines and Annette W. Camps of Gainesville; two sons, Nathaniel Williams Jr. and James David Alonzo Williams, both of Gainesville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Willard E. Carlson

Willard E. Carlson of Gainesville died Friday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 86.

Mr. Carlson was born in Portland, Ore., and moved to Gainesville from Crystal River seven months ago.

He worked as an engineer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 23 years. He served in the Merchant Marines during the Vietnam War. He was a Methodist and a mason.

He was a master craftsman and enjoyed shipbuilding and woodworking.

Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his wife, Edna M. Carlson; and a son, Gary W. Carlson.

Survivors include daughters Dianne Lauramoore of Gainesville, Karen Robinson of San Antonio, Texas, and Leanne Overstreet of Tampa; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William A. Coombs Sr.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- William A. Coombs Sr. died Sunday at his home. He was 68.

Born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., he moved to Keystone Heights in 1979 from Eagan, Minn.

Mr. Coombs was a retired maintenance manager for Northwest Airlines.

He was a member of Keystone United Methodist Church and served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 635 of Penn Hill, Pa., the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Syria Temple, both of Pittsburg, Pa., and a life member of Elks Lodge 577 of Wilkinsburg, Pa.

Survivors include his wife, Carol M. Coombs; a son, Billy Coombs; a daughter, Lori Coombs; and a brother, Al Coombs of Lady Lake.

Margaret Jane Gibbons

MELROSE -- Margaret Jane Gibbons died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 80.

She was born in Detroit, Ill., and lived in Melrose most of her life. She was a member of Keystone Country Club and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include daughters Cissy Parades and Susan Wegener, both of Charleston, S.C.; a brother, Donald Sloan of Danville, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
