Lottie E. O'Berry Leggett

LAKE BUTLER - Lottie E. O'Berry Leggett died Monday at Shands at Starke following an extended illness. She was 88.

Mrs. Leggett was born in Union County and lived most of her life in Alachua and Union counties.

She retired in 1975 from the Florida Forestry Service as a tower lookout.

She was a member of Micanopy Baptist Church.

Mrs. Leggett was preceded in death by her husband, Russell O'Berry.

Survivors include sons Marvin "Buddy" O'Berry of Long Island, N.Y., and James G. Thomas Jr. of Lake Butler; a brother, Luther Green of Carlsbad, N.M.; five grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Alan David Lehtola Sr.

HIGH SPRINGS - Alan David Lehtola Sr. died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center.

He was 51.

Mr. Lehtola was born in Hancock, Mich., and moved to High Springs from Key Largo in 1988.

He was a kitchen designer at Lowe's in Lake City and a former assistant Scout master in Troop No. 88 in Alachua. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of High Springs.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Kathryn "Kitty" Lehtola of High Springs; a son, Alan Lehtola Jr. of Gainesville; a daughter, Erika Young of High Springs; brothers Philip Lehtola of Kirkland, Ohio, and Dale Lehtola of Nashville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Alfred Richard Nash

Alfred Richard Nash of Gainesville died Sunday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was 82.

Mr. Nash was born in Lawrence, Mass., and moved to Gainesville from Miami 12 years ago.

He was a business owner and a member of Faith Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Nash of Gainesville; sons Jim Nash of Hawthorne, Dean Nash of Miami, Dennis Nash of Denmark and Noel Nash of Payson, Utah; brothers James Nash of Marietta, Ga., and Edward Nash of Norwood, Mass.; a sister, Catherine Kallof of Phoenix, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.

Harold C. Gerry

Harold C. Gerry died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 57.

Mr. Gerry was born in New London, Conn., and moved to Gainesville from Orlando 13 years ago. He had been working as a consultant with Bell South after retiring from the company.

He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Winter Park. Mr. Gerry was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Gainesville Trap and Skeet Club and the St. Augustine Rod and Gun Club. He was also a volunteer Big Brother.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Gerry; son John Michael Gerry of Gainesville; daughters Katherine Roberts of Gainesville and Leslie Doran of Orlando; his parents, Harold and Marilyn Gerry of Crossville, Tenn.; brothers Thomas Gerry of Longwood and Michael Gerry of Gainesville; and three grandchildren.

Kathleen Louise Miller

Kathleen Louise Miller died Monday at Hospice House in Gainesville. She was 77.

Born in Fall River, Mass., she moved to Gainesville seven years ago from Tiverton, R.I.

She had been an administrative assistant with the Department of the Navy. In 1980, Mrs. Miller was selected Rhode Island government's employee of the year.

She attended Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, James H. Miller of Gainesville; a son, Stephen Miller of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a daughter, Kathleen Crepeau of Hawthorne; a brother, Stanley Sincoski of Tiverton, R.I.; two sisters, Florence Hodkinson and Mary Keeley of West Barnstable, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

Margaret Schakow

Margaret Schakow died at her home Monday. She was 81.

Mrs. Schakow was born in Akron, Ohio, where she graduated with honors from Garfield High School. She moved to Gainesville from Sarasota 30 years ago.

In addition to being a homemaker, she was an accomplished cook and baker and enjoyed traveling and water colors.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Carl Schakow, and by one son, Carl Schakow Jr.

Survivors include four sons who live in Gainesville, Gerald, Robert, Richard and James Schakow, as well as nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joseph Wayne Ballinger Jr.

STARKE - Joseph Wayne Ballinger Jr. died at his residence Monday following a sudden illness.

He was 55.

Mr. Ballinger was born in Wyandotte, Mich., and moved to Starke from Port St. Lucie in 1987.

He was a retired correctional officer with the Lawtey Correctional Institution and a former St. Lucie County deputy sheriff.

He was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Ballinger of Starke; a daughter, Jodi Bray of Starke; a sister, Jacqueline Crosby of Tallahassee; and two grandchildren.

Pan Courtelis

Pan Courtelis, whose mother is University of Florida trustee Louise H. Courtelis, died June 7 at his residence in Miami from cancer of the esophagus. He was 44.

Mr. Courtelis was a civil engineer and a chairman of the Voices for Children, a charity organization.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Kiki Heuer of Reddick.

James Meredith Bunting

ALACHUA - James Meredith Bunting of Alachua died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was 65.

Mr. Bunting was born in Philadelphia and moved to Alachua from Salem, N.J., 13 years ago.

He was a mechanic and a Baptist. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Patricia Baker Bunting of Alachua; daughters Michelle Peck of Kingman, Ariz., and Melissa Bunting of Penns Grove, N.J.; sons James Bunting Sr. of St. Cloud, Phillip John Bunting of Ocala and Andrew Bunting of Deep Water, N.J.; stepdaughters Cindy Peterson of High Springs and Angelia Fain of Middleburg; a stepson, Dewey Stalvey Jr. of Kennesaw, Ga.; a sister, Pat Cotton of Elmer, N.J.; a brother, George Bunting of California; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lonnie Charles Jackson Sr.

Lonnie Charles Jackson Sr. of Gainesville died Thursday at Shands at AGH.

He was 66.

Mr. Jackson was born in Gainesville and lived in Boston before moving to Gainesville in 1979.

He was a retired nursing assistant with Alachua General Hospital and a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. The 1955 Lincoln High School graduate played trumpet with bands in Gainesville and Boston.

Survivors include his wife, Lucinda Barber-Jackson of Gainesville; daughters Carolyn J. Banks of Gainesville, Charisse J. Jackson of Leesburg and Lisa Jackson of Anchorage, Alaska; sons Lonnie Jackson Jr. of Gainesville, Darius B. Jackson of Atlanta and Darryl C. Jackson of Dallas; half-sisters Maxine Bethea of Gainesville, Leola Lewis of Atlanta, Vernell Prayer, Mable Dix and Carol Watkins, all of Miami, Annette Wilson of Reading, Pa., and Joyce Buisson of Fort Lauderdale; half-brothers the Rev. Joseph P. Lewis of Lynchburg, Va., Henry Lewis of Long Beach, Calif., and Lemuel Lewis of Gainesville; and many grandchildren.

Mary Wall Eastman

Mary Wall Eastman of Gainesville died Monday at Oakview Regional Care Center in Williston following a lengthy illness.

She was 86.

Mrs. Eastman was born in Purvis, Miss., and moved to Gainesville from Micanopy 30 years ago. She was a homemaker and a Pentecostal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Ray Eastman.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha A. Weaver of Micanopy; sons James N. Entrekin of Alachua and Marvin Wesley Entrekin of Andalusia, Ala.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
