Alice J. Benner

Alice J. Benner of Daytona Beach died Wednesday in Daytona Beach following a brief illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Benner was born in South Bend, Ind., and lived in Gainesville before moving to Daytona Beach 20 years ago.

She was an Episcopalian and a medical records technician at the University of Florida.

Survivors include a daughter, Laurie McGuire of Gainesville; a son, Jeffrey Pearce of Daytona Beach; two nieces, Stacy Forgy of San Jose, Calif., and Maureen McCarthy of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Betty Jean Boyd

BRANFORD - Betty Jean Boyd died Thursday at her residence in Branford following an extended illness. She was 69.

Mrs. Boyd was born in Gulf Hammock and lived in the Branford area for most of her life.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hatchbend Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Boyd of Branford; four sons, Randy Boyd of Orlando, and Billy Boyd, the Rev. Steve Boyd and Kelly Boyd, all of Branford; three sisters, Merle Newbern of Branford, Bobbie Bias of Lake City and Sheryle Tummond of Ponte Vedra; four brothers, Cecil Tummond of Lake City, Billy Tummond of Winter Haven, D.D. Tummond of Fowlers Bluff and Ralph Tummond of Tarpon Springs; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Kay Weest Carbon

Kay Weest Carbon of Berkeley Heights, N.J., died Friday in New Jersey following an extended illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Carbon was born and raised in Hampton. She moved to New Jersey as a young adult.

She was a factory worker during World War II.

She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include two brothers, Emory Brown of Hampton and T. Frank Brown of Sarasota.

Jimmie E. Joiner

HIGH SPRINGS - Jimmie E. Joiner of High Springs died Thursday in High Springs. He was 60.

Mr. Joiner was born in Gainesville and moved to High Springs 10 years ago.

He worked at the medical plant at the University of Florida from 1989 to 2000.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring at the rank of master sergeant.

Mr. Joiner was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Joiner of High Springs; a daughter, Tracy Joiner of Ormond Beach; a son, Jimmie Joiner Jr. of Leesburg; his mother, Pearlie Mae Bass of High Springs; a sister, Gaile J. Smith of Kissimmee; a brother, Don Joiner of Gainesville; and four grandchildren, Jacqueline, Morgan, Griffin and Alexis.

Donald Lee Martin

HIGH SPRINGS - Donald Lee Martin, a lifelong resident of High Springs, died Wednesday at Shands at the University of Florida. He was 54.

Mr. Martin was ranch foreman and a member of Mount Horeb Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen T. Martin of High Springs; two sons, David Martin and Michael Martin, both of High Springs; a sister, Sardale Stancel of Bell; a brother, Franklin Martin of High Springs; and two grandchildren, Daniel Martin and Rickey Martin, both of High Springs.

Marie V. Black

Marie V. Black of Gainesville died Sunday. She was 79.

She was born in Princess Anne, Va., and moved to Gainesville in 1955. She was a homemaker and was active in Bible class at Northwest Baptist Church.

She received a bachelor's degree from Georgia Academy for Women in Macon, Ga.

Survivors include her husband, E. Black of Gainesville; two daughters, Carolyn Marie Scott and Susan Renea Carter, both of Gainesville; two brothers, Paul E. Jones and Samuel E. Jones, both of Sarasota; two grandsons, Jud Carter and Keegen Carter, both of Gainesville; and two granddaughters, Carolyn Renia Rice and Kam Marie Scott, both of Atlanta.

Laura Ellen Langford Douglas

TRENTON -- Laura Ellen "L.E." Langford Douglas of Trenton died Monday. She was 82.

She lived in Alachua County and was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jessie Langford, and a daughter, Verna Mae Hodge.

Survivors include her husband, Council Douglas Sr. of Trenton; four daughters, Reatha Parrish of Gilchrist County, Freddie Mae Sears of Trenton and Shirley O'Steen and Rose Annette Coots, both of High Springs; five sons, Dewight Douglas, Sam Douglas and Junior Douglas, all of Gilchrist County, D.J. Douglas of Fort White and Leland Douglas of Bell; a sister, Louise Swords of Gainesville; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren.

William E. Griffis

STARKE -- William E. "Bill" Griffis of Starke died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida. He was 78.

Mr. Griffis lived in Bradford County most of his life and was a member of Starke First Christian Church. He was a retired correctional officer for the Union Correctional Institute. He was a former wholesale milk and ice cream distributor, and he was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Agee Griffis of Starke; a daughter, Kathleen Morgan of St. Augustine; a son, Lonnie J. Griffis of Saudi Arabia; a sister, Esther L. Sapp of Starke; a brother, James "Jimmy" Griffis of Eastman, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Eileen Padgett

OLD TOWN -- Eileen Padgett of Old Town died Sunday. She was 72.

She lived in Dixie County her entire life and was a member of Suwannee River Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Padgett of Old Town; a son, Bill Padgett of Old Town; two daughters, Kathleen Kirk of West Palm Beach and Linda Reposa of Chesapeake, Va.; two sisters, Shirley Williams of Tampa and Ramona Hodge of Old Town; a brother, Buddy Karl of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A. Jack Phillips

BRANFORD -- A. Jack Phillips of Branford died Sunday. He was 84.

Mr. Phillips was a native of Branford and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a retired banker and a member of the American Legion, Branford Masonic Lodge No. 130, the Branford Shrine Club Moroccan Temple and the Branford Sportsman Club. He also was an honorary member of the Branford Future Farmers of America.

He graduated from Mercer University and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was the longest-standing member of First Baptist Church of Branford.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Booker Phillips of Branford; and a daughter, Carol A. "Sunny" Phillips of Tallahassee.

Stafford Jackson Simmons

STARKE -- Stafford Jackson Simmons of Starke died Sunday. He was 80.

Mr. Simmons was born in Avon Park and moved to Starke from Jacksonville 15 years ago. He worked at Bradford Style Shop in Starke and had been a barber for 60 years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include three daughters, Rose Simmons and Bonnie Profitt, both of Starke, and Geraldine Salzman of Los Angeles; three sisters, Eva Bryant and Lonie Hay, both of Avon Park, and Ozzie Lynn of St. Petersburg; and six grandchildren.

Clarence Righter Wood Jr.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS -- Clarence Righter Wood Jr. of Keystone Heights died Sunday. He was 80.

Mr. Wood was born in Chesterfield County, Va., and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and he worked for Rural Electrification Administration and Clay Electric Cooperative as a system engineer.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing the guitar. He was a member of Keystone Heights Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Alberta Wood of Keystone Heights; a sister, Frances Rose Crockett of Midlothian, Va.; four children, Richard A. Wood of Rockville, Md., Nanci Wood Christian of Ocala, Rebecca Wood Raymond of Jacksonville and Bradley J. Wood of Tampa; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Pollyanna Mae Alessi

HAWTHORNE -- Pollyanna Mae Alessi died Wednesday at Putnam Community Medical Center. She was 28.

A native of Spokane, Wash., she moved to Putnam County from Oakland, Calif., in 1987.

She was a Protestant and a scan coordinator with Albertson's in Gainesville.

Survivors include a son, Joey Alessi of Hawthorne; her father and stepmother, Bob and Susan Herron of Hawthorne; her grandmother, Mae K. Herron of Twin Falls, Idaho; brothers Kevin Herron of Hawthorne and Robert Herron of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Rebecca Brazeal of Grand Rapids, Mich.; stepsisters Maxine Moseberth and Kimberly Coffey, both of Keystone Heights, and Mary Wright of Gainesville.

Marjorie Johnson Barton

Marjorie Johnson Barton of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Barton was born in Fort Myers and moved to Gainesville 60 years ago.

She was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was a member of Majestic Social Club, where she served as treasurer.

She attended the Alachua County public schools.

Survivors include a son, Nathaniel Cameron; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
