Carol "Lou" Jones of Valdosta, Ga., died Feb. 27 in Valdosta. She was 43.

The Williston native was a homemaker.

Local survivors include her mother, Bessie Jones of Williston; sons Antonio Bostick and Richard Addison, both of Alachua; a sister, Eula Blake of Alachua; and a brother Raymond Jones of Williston.

Cherrie L. Mitchem

CHIEFLAND - Cherrie L. Mitchem died Friday at Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 69.

Mrs. Mitchem was born in Kingstree, S.C., and moved to Chiefland 52 years ago. She was a nurse and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

Survivors include her husband, Woodrow Mitchem of Chiefland; a son, Benjamin McClary of Jamaica, N.Y.; daughters Angela Williams of Chiefland and Annette Dougherty of Bellerose, N.Y.; sisters Barbara Holt of Corona, N.Y., and Laura Felton and Marie Seward, both of Eustis; brothers Benjamin McClary of Kingstree, S.C., and Enoch McClary of Royela Park, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Idella Bradley Nelson

HAWTHORNE - Idella Bradley Nelson died Monday at Shands at AGH following a brief illness. She was 99.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Rochelle and moved to Hawthorne from St. Petersburg 75 years ago.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, where she served as mother of the church.

She was a graduate of Jerusalem Institute in Lakeland.

Survivors include daughters Bennie J. Edwards and Jacquelyn Wilson, both of Fort Lauderdale, and Della M. Harris of Houston; sons Bobby Nelson of Miami and Ronald Nelson of Hawthorne; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Alfia Rebecca Elizabeth Williams O'Neal

LIVE OAK - Alfia Rebecca Elizabeth Williams O'Neal died Friday at Surrey Place following an extended illness. She was 101.

A lifelong resident of Live Oak, Mrs. O'Neal was a member of the Live Oak Church of God.

Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Brim of Jacksonville; a son, Walter O'Neal of Live Oak; 24 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 41 great- great-grandchildren.

Harold D. Peek

The Rev. Harold D. Peek of Commerce, Ga., died Sunday. He was 70.

The former Gainesville resident was a pastor and a member of the Southern Baptist Ministerial Association.

He has no local survivors.

Jimmie Gary Thompson

FORT MYERS - Jimmie Gary Thompson, a former Cross City resident, died Monday while visiting family in Appleton, Wis. He was 76.

Mr. Thompson was a retired business owner and a Methodist. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a former member of the Shamrock Lodge.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Hemmersbach of Appleton; a son, Guy Richard Thompson of Fort Myers; a sister, Mary Ayers of Trenton; and two grandchildren.

Hazel Eddy Harrell Williams

BROOKER - Hazel Eddy Harrell Williams died Wednesday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. She was 76.

Mrs. Williams was born in Waldo and lived most of her life in Brooker.

She was an elementary school teacher with the Bradford County school system, retiring in 1979 after 32 years. She was a member of Brooker Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by husbands M.D. Harrell and John R. Williams.

Survivors include daughters Sharon A. Beutke of Alachua, Kathy R. Gaskins of Starke and Robin L. Copeland of West Point, Ga.; sons Rudy Williams of Padro and Randy Williams of Chesapeake, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Sarah Washington Britt

Sarah Washington Britt of Gainesville died Monday at Integrated Health Services after a lingering illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Britt was born in St. George, S.C., and moved to Gainesville in the early 1930s. She was homemaker and a member of the Pilgrim's Rest Church of God, where she was a mother of the church.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann Dollison of Gainesville; five grandchildren, including her caregiver, Leverne Barbour of Gainesville; eight great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Jerry D. Clark

STARKE - Jerry D. Clark died Friday at Shands at the University of Florida after an extended illness. He was 80.

Mr. Clark was a lifelong resident of Starke and was educated at Bradford County schools. He was a retired UF employee. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Starke, where he served on the board of trustees.

Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Mary Clark of Starke; sons John Clark of Starke and Michael Clark of Jacksonville; a brother, the Rev. Ulysses Clark of Tallahassee; his caregiver, Ranell English of Starke; and three grandchildren.

Jean Kelley Deaton

WILLISTON - Jean Kelley Deaton died Sunday at Shands at AGH. She was 74.

Mrs. Deaton was born in Bowdoinham, Maine, and moved to Williston more than 35 years ago from Fort Lauderdale. She was a retired hairdresser. Mrs. Deaton enjoyed gardening and travel and loved visiting with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory A. Deaton Sr.

She is survived by a son, Jeffrey Richards of Bronson; a daughter, Constance Prince of Chicago; a stepson, Emory A. Deaton Jr. of Atlanta; stepdaughters Lanette Pupp of Georgia and Phyllis Kelley of North Carolina; a brother, Alan H. "Punky" Lamoreau of Presque Isle, Maine; sisters Joyce Veysey of Bangor, Maine, Nina Coffin of East Windsor, Conn., Norma Berry of Cedartown, Ga., and Diane Capen of Sanford, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arthur Floyd Sr.

FLEMINGTON - Arthur Floyd Sr. died Sunday at Gainesville Health Care Center after a brief illness. He was 102.

A retired farmer, Mr. Floyd lived in Flemington all his life and was a member of the New St. Paul Free Methodist Church.

He is survived by daughters Mary Alice Perry and Christine Floyd, both of Flemington; sons Arthur Floyd Jr. and Robert Floyd, both of Flemington; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Louis Gray

Lawrence Louis Gray of Gainesville died Tuesday from progressive supranuclear palsy at Hospice of North Central Florida. He was 83.

Mr. Gray was born in Salamanca, N.Y., in 1918 and moved to Gainesville in 1980. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Mr. Gray worked for several law firms before becoming general counsel for the Consolidated Natural Gas Co. in Pittsburgh. He was a member of many legal organizations, including the American Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

He also served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army and Army Air Forces during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Polly Gray of Gainesville; a son, Nicholas J. F. Gray of Wanaque, N.J.; daughters Deborah E. Gray of Concord, Mass., and Amy G. Nickerson of Gainesville; and four grandsons.

Albert Hicks Jr.

Albert Hicks Jr. of Gainesville died Monday at Shands at the University of Florida after a brief illness. He was 55.

A lifelong resident of High Springs, Mr. Hicks graduated from Lincoln High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a mason and a member of the Springhill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Yolanda Hicks of Gainesville; brothers Horace Hicks and Thomas Hicks, both of Gainesville, and Al Bobby Hicks of Pompano Beach; sisters Doris Hicks, Dalinda Hill and Wandella McHome, all of Gainesville; and a stepsister, Jeroline Hicks of Tampa.
