Betty I. White
Betty I. White of Gainesville died Wednesday at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 84.
Mrs. White was born in Kewanee, Ill., and moved to Gainesville from Moline.
She worked for many years at Quad City families, providing child care.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a 50-year member of the St. Martha's Altar Guild.
She was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed watching tennis and attended several Davis Cup matches with her daughter.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. White.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly White of Gainesville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael White, and Jack and Sharon White of Zionsville, Ind.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Jack C. Haldeman II
Haldeman local author dies at 60
Science fiction writer Jack C. Haldeman II of Gainesville died Tuesday at the Hospice Care Center. He was 60.
Mr. Haldeman was born in Hopkinsville, Ky., and lived in Alaska and Maryland before moving to Gainesville in 1979.
He worked as a librarian and coordinator of computer applications at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
He published eight science fiction novels and dozens of short stories. His most recent novel was "High Steel, " published in 1993.
He chaired the 1974 World Science Fiction Convention in Washington, D.C.
Survivors, all of Gainesville, include his wife, Barbara Haldeman; a daughter, Lorena Haldeman; and a brother, Joe Haldeman.

Jack H. Cross
MAYO - Jack H. Cross, a lifelong resident of Mayo, died Dec. 26 in Live Oak.
He was 67.
Mr. Cross served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Mayo Masonic Lodge and First United Church of Mayo.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Rena Cross of Mayo; sons Randall Cross of Glen St. Mary, and Rob and Richard Cross, both of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren.

Robert Lee Mitchell
Robert Lee Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Monday at Shands at AGH. He was 34.
Mr. Mitchell was an auto detailer and a graduate of Eastside High School.
Survivors, all of Gainesville, include daughters Seteria D. Mitchell and Yatandria Mitchell; his parents, Rosie and Robert Mitchell; and sisters Nannette, Yvonne and Darlene Mitchell.

Equishia Crumedy
Equishia Dineal Yarekia Crumedy of Gainesville died Sunday in Palatka from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 17.
Miss Crumedy was a senior at Eastside High School. She was a member of the track team.
She attended Williams Temple Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include her mother, Natherine Benjamin of Gainesville; her father, Tommy Lee Crumedy Jr. of Palatka; brothers Tommy Lee Crumedy III of Atlanta, Terrell Crumedy of Palatka and Kruise Crumedy of Gainesville; sisters Tomanisha Crumedy of Richmond, Va., and Oqueria Crumedy and ReShena Clark, both of Gainesville; her maternal grandmother, Viola Benjamin of Gainesville; her maternal grandfather, Tommy Lee Crumedy Sr. of East Orange, N.J.

Sarah D. Isbell
Sarah D. Isbell of Gainesville died Thursday at Clare Bridge of Gainesville. She was 85.
Mrs. Isbell was born in Shanesville, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville from Clemmons, N.C., in 2000.
She was a proofreader for a printing company and a Methodist. She enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by a brother, Ernest Doerschuk Jr. of Leicester, N.C.

Robert Dennis Jr.
Robert Solomon Dennis Jr. of Gainesville died Wednesday at Shands at AGH. He was 80.
Mr. Dennis was born in Brewton, Ala., and moved to Gainesville from Perry in 1933.
He was a retired supervisor with the state of Florida Agricultural Division. He received a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Florida. He was a World War II veteran and participated in the China/Burma theater.
Survivors include a brother, Normal Dennis of Savannah.

Alma Alice McCray
CROSS CITY - Alma Alice McCray died Friday in Gainesville. She was 73.
Mrs. McCray was born in Butler County, Ala., and moved to Cross City from Oklahoma nine months ago.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters Ellen Harper of Cross City, Gail Schutt of Apopka and Marie Merrill of Eufaula, Okla.; a sister, Roxie Judson of Old Town; brothers Mallie "Sonny" Hall and Lacy Butler, both of Old Town; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Henry Horry Hair Jr.
LIVE OAK -- Henry Horry Hair Jr., a former state senator who spent 33 years in public service, died Wednesday at Shands at Live Oak following a lengthy bout with emphysema. He was 89.
A native of Live Oak, Mr. Hair graduated from Suwannee High School and later attended The Citadel.
He began his career as supervisor of the state beverage department in Miami. He returned to Suwannee County in 1940, where he served as tax collector until 1950.
After briefly serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Hair farmed in Georgia for five years, returning to Live Oak in 1954. He served as the manager of the Suwannee County Hospital.
He was elected to the state Senate in 1956. In 1962 he began his service as officer manager for former Secretary of State Tom Adams and for former Gov. Reubin Askew.
He retired from state government in 1974 and returned to Live Oak.
In 1987, the Suwannee County chamber of commerce recognized his service to the county by awarding him its Trailblazer award.
Mr. Hair was a member of the First Baptist Church of Live Oak.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Hair of Live Oak; a daughter, Carol Hair Moore of Tallahassee; two sons, Henry Horry Hair III of Lakeland and Mattox Strickland Hair of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Hazel Anita Feagle
Hazel Anita Feagle, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Thursday in Hawthorne. She was 38.
Mrs. Feagle graduated from Hawthorne High School. She graduated from the University of Florida with high honors in accounting. She was an accountant with the radiology department at UF.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hawthorne.
Survivors include her fiance, Thomas Armstrong Duncan III of Gainesville; her parents, Marvin and Juanita Feagle of Hawthorne; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Byron and Renee Feagle of Hawthorne and Steven and Elise Feagle of Gainesville; three nephews and a niece.
Expressions of sympathy may be made as donations to Hospice of North Central Florida.
Robert E. Lames
Robert E. Lames died Wednesday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 87.
Mr. Lames was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and moved to Gainesville from Ocala.
He was a Catholic and a retired Anheuser-Busch employee.
He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with a Silver Battle Star, six overseas service bars, a service stripe and a good conduct medal for his service in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Lames was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Jerry Lames of Gainesville; a daughter, Sandy Anderson of Gainesville; and three sons, Mike Lames of Collinsville, Okla., Larry Lames of Fayetteville, Ark., and Greg Lames of Ottumwa.
