Paul G. Alexander Sr.

Paul G. Alexander Sr. of Pell City, Ala., died Wednesday. He was 79.

Mr. Alexander was a retired craftsman and a Baptist.

Local survivors include a son, James Foust of Gainesville.

Gertrude D. Gill

Gertrude D. Gill, a lifelong resident of Auburndale, died Friday at Palm Garden of Winter Haven. She was 83.

Mrs. Gill was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Auburndale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Gill, who died in 1991.

She is survived by a son, Randy Gill of Gainesville.

Solomon J. Kroll

Solomon J. Kroll of Gainesville died Tuesday at the Hospice House of Gainesville.

He was 83.

A native of Michigan, Mr. Kroll moved to Gainesville from Lake Worth four years ago.

He was the owner of Moe Laundry and Ann Arbor Diaper Service.

He was Jewish.

Mr. Kroll served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a member of the Kiwanis in Michigan for 20 years. He also volunteered at national parks.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Kroll of Gainesville; a daughter, Kathie Weinmann of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a son, Laurence Kroll of Gainesville; a sister, Evelyn Tarack of Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Christine Yoder Massanari

Christine Yoder Massanari of Goshen, Ind., died Friday in Goshen. She was 84.

The former Gainesville resident has no local survivors.

Alfred Dean McClendon

HAWTHORNE - Alfred Dean McClendon, a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, died Friday in Gainesville.

He was 73.

Mr. McClendon was a tree surgeon with the city of Gainesville Parks and Grounds Division.

He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee McClendon, and a son, Bobby Dean McClendon.

He loved gardening, flowers, cooking and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith McClendon of Windsor; seven daughters, Patricia Martin of Gainesville, Barbara Simmons of Interlachen, Judy Hass of Micanopy, Sharon Bullivant of Starke, Julia Kimbrough of Micanopy and Rebekah Speck and Andrea Slone, both of Ocala; three sons, Allan Cowart and Tim Cowart, both of Gainesville, and John Cowart of Micanopy; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pauline B. Paredes

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - Pauline B. Paredes died Thursday at her residence in Keystone Heights.

She was 80.

Mrs. Paredes was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Keystone Heights from Rosedale, N.Y., in 1989.

She was an insurance adjuster for the state of New York for 30 years.

She was a member of St. William Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Steven Paredes of Keystone Heights; two grandchildren; and a great- grandchild.

Carnot Earl Rumph

Carnot Earl Rumph of rural Fort White died Thursday in Lake City. He was 88.

Mr. Rumph was born in Alachua County and moved to rural Fort White at an early age.

He was a schoolteacher and a member of Tustenuggee United Methodist Church.

He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Rumph received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Florida.

Survivors include two daughters, Loretta Leary of Tarpon Springs and Barbara Seigel of Franklin, N.C.; a sister, Bessie Lux of Dowling Park; three brothers, Quinton Rumph of Jacksonville, Leo Rumph of Ormond Beach and Albert Rumph of Plano, Texas; three grandchildren; and a great- grandchildren.

Helen Lucille Dowling Scoggins

STARKE - Helen Lucille Dowling Scoggins of Starke died Thursday at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. She was 72.

Mrs. Scoggins was born in Taylor and moved to Starke from Raiford in 1946.

She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence "Rudy" Scoggins of Starke; three daughters, Patricia Sistrunk of Starke and Beth Waters and Linda Patrick, both of Lawtey; a son, Randy Scoggins of Hampton Lake; a sister, Mildred Jones of Batavia, Ill.; a brother, W.B. Dowling of Dunnellon; nine grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.

Marinell Sheffield

Marinell Sheffield of Gainesville died Friday in Gainesville. She was 47.

Mrs. Sheffield was born in Winter Haven and moved to Gainesville from Auburndale in 1973.

She was a children's and youth ministry assistant at First Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C. She was also patient services assistant with the American Cancer Society and before that a mortgage loan assistant with Fortune Federal/Florida Federal.

She was also publisher of the Sheffield Times.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Lester Sheffield; and a niece, Kimberly Suzanne Laudon.

Survivors include her mother, Rubye McMullen Sheffield of Auburndale; a sister, Rosalyn Savage; and two nieces, Lauren Mercedes Laudon and Lindsey Laudon.

Pauline Cocke Fugate

ALACHUA - Pauline Cocke Fugate died Wednesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 94.

Mrs. Fugate was born in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and moved to Alachua at a young age.

She was a retired postal clerk and a member of First United Methodist Church of Alachua, where she taught Sunday school.

She attended the University of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.M. Fugate, and a son, William R. Fugate.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Fugate O'Conner of Alachua; a son, Joseph Allen Fugate of Destrehan, La.; brothers Willard Cocke of Jacksonville and Joseph B. Cocke of Clemson, S.C.; a sister, Helen Johnston of Ocala; five grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great- grandchild.

Juanita Smothers Bennett

Juanita Smothers Bennett, a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, died Monday in St. Augustine. She was 81.

Mrs. Bennett was a Baptist.

Local survivors include daughters Rose Turk of Gainesville and Barbara Warmack of Newberry.

Robert Michael Gardner

Robert Michael Gardner of Orlando died Monday. He was 47.

The former Gainesville resident owned a Harley-Davidson shop. He was a Methodist.

Local survivors include a daughter, Anne Gardner of Gainesville.
