Sarah Elnora Duncan
Sarah Elnora Duncan died suddenly Saturday at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 86.
Mrs. Duncan was born in Umatilla and moved to Gainesville from Ojus in 1978.
Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Church of Gainesville.
Survivors include a husband, John F. Duncan; four daughters, Frances R. Gersten of Miami, Geraldine D. Ellis of Hernando, Lucile D. Roberts of Hollywood and Edwina D. Wesockes of Orlando; a son, Stuart A. Duncan of Hollywood; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Donald R. Coffman
Donald R. Coffman of Melrose died Saturday after a short illness at Shands at the University of Florida. He was 42.
Mr. Coffman moved to Melrose from Jacksonville in 1969. He was an electronics technician.
Mr. Coffman is survived by his mother, Mary L. Coffman of Melrose; a brother, John Coffman of Daytona Beach; a sister, Maggie Coffman of Orange Park; and a longtime companion, Susan Tomlinson of Melrose.
Alberta Kelly
HIGH SPRINGS -- Alberta Kelly died Thursday at her home after a lengthy illness. She was 85.
She was born in Bainbridge, Ga., and lived in High Springs for 83 years. She was a child care provider and Sunday school teacher at Church of God by Faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Doris Marie Wright of High Springs, Gloria Washington of Alachua and Patricia Fisher of Brooksville; four sons, George Kelly of Valdosta, Ga., Earl Kelly of Daytona Beach, and John Kelly and Larry Kelly, both of High Springs; a brother, John Durr of Riviera Beach; five sisters, Mozell Burrs of Belle Glade, Willie Lee Burrs of Miami, Caretha Burrs of Riviera Beach, Eliza Haywood of High Springs and Mildred Parker of Waycross, Ga.; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Walter Alexander Kolis
CEDAR KEY -- Walter Alexander Kolis of Cedar Key died Thursday at his home. He was 51.
Mr. Kolis was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and moved to Cedar Key from Tampa 14 years ago.
A veteran of the Navy and a member of the Eagles of Cedar Key, Mr. Kolis was an inventor who loved fishing.
Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Kolis of New York; longtime companion, Joan "Sam" Parks of Cedar Key; two sons, Richard Kolis and Travis Parks of Cedar Key; three brothers, Bradley Kolis of Oxford, N.Y., Thomas Kolis of W.Va., and Daniel Kolis of Greene, N.Y.; two sisters, Joan and Lora Kolis of Oxford, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
Lucile Cook Leavitt
Lucile Cook Leavitt of Gainesville died Saturday following a stroke at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 88.
Born in Boston, Mrs. Leavitt lived all of her married
life in Hingham, Mass., and moved to Gainesville in 1992.
Mrs. Leavitt worked as a volunteer in the Hingham library, and then in the Gainesville public library. She served as a deacon for the Congregational Church in Hingham and gave her time and energy to charitable causes. She was an avid bridge player.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcy Leavitt Bourne of London, England and Candace Valenstein of Gainesville; and three grandsons.
Lisen S. Lewis
Lisen Summerlin Lewis died Friday at her home in Franklin, Va.
Mrs. Lewis graduated from the University of Florida.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Lewis of Atlanta; a daughter, Alix Hadley of Gainesville; her mother, Louise Summerlin of Gainesville; her father, Dr. Winston Summerlin of Gainesville; and two brothers, Paul and Bruce Summerlin of Gainesville.
James Samuel Nolan
James Samuel Nolan died Saturday at his farm in Suwannee County. He was 74.
Mr. Nolan was born in Woodmere and grew up in Suwannee County. He graduated from Suwannee High School, the University of Florida and Nova University.
He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific in World War II. Mr. Nolan was in agricultural sales until he became a teacher in 1968.
He taught vocational agriculture at Suwannee High School in Live Oak and Spring Hill Middle School in High Springs.
Mr. Nolan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Gainesville Marine Corps League.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Greene Nolan; two daughters, Wanda Denny and Kathryn Post of Gainesville; three sisters, Mae Liddle of Melbourne, Marjorie Harris of Live Oak and Betty Willis of Indiatlantic Beach; a brother, Damon Nolan of McAlpin; two grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
John Vincent O'Connor
John Vincent O'Connor died Sunday at his residence in Gainesville after a long illness. He was 46.
Mr. O'Connor was born in Rockville Center, N.Y., and moved to Gainesville from Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1986. He worked as an organization and management consultant at Tacachale and was a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patrice O'Connor of Gainesville; two daughters, Kathleen and Leighann O'Connor of Gainesville; a son, John O'Connor of Gainesville; two sisters, Jeneva O'Connor of Dallas and Marijane O'Connor of Massapequa, N.Y.; three brothers, Brian O'Connor of Riverview, Edwin O'Connor of Massapequa, and Richard O'Connor of Valrico; and his mother, Beatrice O'Connor of Massapequa.
Arthur Scheihing
Arthur Scheihing of Morriston died Saturday at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 78.
Born in Newark, N.J., Mr. Scheihing moved from Lakewood, N.J., to Morriston 11 years ago.
Mr. Scheihing was a retired bookkeeper. He was a Protestant.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Hopcroft and Sharon Hoodzow of Morriston; and three grandchildren.
June Marie Brownlee
STARKE -- June Marie Brownlee of Starke died Tuesday at Shands at Starke following an extended illness. She was 82.
Mrs. Brownlee was born in Chicago and moved to Bradford County in 1945.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband James W. Brownlee Sr.
Survivors include a son, James W. Brownlee Jr. of Starke; a sister, Loretta Crenshaw of Gainesville; a brother, Lester Heather of St. Charles, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
Greg Heron Cunningham
Greg Heron Cunningham of Gainesville died April 12 in Shands Hospital as a result of a homicide. He was 23.
The Gainesville native was an auto mechanic and a 1994 graduate of Eastside High School.
Mr. Cunningham attended the Bartley Temple United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Shanavia Cunningham of South Carolina; two sons, Keyon Maze and Demetrius Cunningham of Gainesville; a mother, Barbara Ann Sheppard of Gainesville; a father, Kenneth Wade of Gainesville; and three sisters, Miosha Sheppard, Sherry Sheppard and Sharon Sheppard of Gainesville; two brothers Alphonso Walker and Waladai Wade of Gainesville; four grandparents, the Rev. Cain and Elizabeth Turner of Gainesville, and James and Lula Sheppard of Quitman, Ga.; and companion Sabrina Fields of Gainesville.
Otis James Denson Jr.
Otis James Denson Jr. of Bronx, N.Y., died Sunday at Jacobi Hospital in New York following a brief illness. He was 59.
Mr. Denson was born in Buena Vista, Ga., and moved to Bronx, N.Y., from Gainesville in 1958.
He was a barber and a tour bus driver.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Vanessa Wright-Denson of Bronx, N.Y.; two daughters, Cynthia Denson of Massachusetts and Nadora Denson of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; three sons, Nathaniel Denson of Fort Hood, Texas and Tracy Denson and Troy Denson, both of the Bronx; his mother, Maggie Robertson of Daytona Beach; three sisters, Barbara Mobley and Roberta Sessions, both of Daytona Beach and Margaret Denson of Gainesville; two brothers, Lee Denson of Daytona Beach and Ronald Denson of Ormond Beach; and seven grandchildren.
Garrett Lee Heishman
Garrett Lee Heishman of Gainesville died Tuesday at Shands at AGH following an extended illness. He was 79.
Mr. Heishman was a retired businessman.
He is survived by three sons, Bruce Heishman of St. Augustine, John Heishman and Garrett Heishman Jr., both of Gainesville.
Maebelle Hicks
Maebelle Hicks of Gainesville died Saturday at Shands at the University of Florida following a brief illness. She was 57.
Mrs. Hicks was born in Alachua and moved to Gainesville 35 years ago.
She was a teacher's assistant and a member of Antioch Holiness Church, where she served as a choir member and an usher.
She graduated from A.L. Mebane High School in 1961 and from Edward Waters College in 1965.
Survivors include a daughter, Delta Davis of Gainesville; a son, Boderick Johnson of Gainesville; her mother, Maelois Hicks of Seattle; her father, Maxi Hicks Sr. of Fort Lauderdale; two brothers, Maxi Hicks Jr. and Theodore Hicks, both of Gainesville; and four grandchildren.
Zan Donald Hutson Sr.
Zan Donald Hutson died Monday at his residence in Gainesville. He was 50.
Mr. Hutson was an optician and a lifelong resident of Gainesville.
He was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.
Mr. Hutson was involved with the Boy Scouts and the Indian Guides.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Hutson of Gainesville; four sons, Zan Hutson Jr. and Christopher Hutson, both of Atlanta, Blake Hutson of Gainesville and Troy Cheves of Melbourne Beach; his mother, Florence Hutson of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.
