Bennie Claude Melvin

STARKE -- Bennie Claude Melvin of Starke died Monday at Shands at Starke. He was 93.

He was born in Brooker and lived in Bradford County his entire life.

Mr. Melvin was a produce farmer and a member of Long Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Garrett Browning Melvin of Starke; three daughters, Nadine Yarbrough, Irene Starling and Carrie Shapiro, all of Jacksonville; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Marilyn J. Nefzger

Marilyn J. Nefzger of Gainesville died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 63.

She was born in Lockhaven, Penn., and moved to Gainesville from West Palm Beach in 1963.

Mrs. Nefzger was a retired administrator for the Human Services Program for the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She also worked as a nurse at Alachua General Hospital. She was a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and the Meals on Wheels Program.

Mrs. Nefzger attended the United Church of Gainesville.

Survivors include a son, Andrew Thomas Nefzger of Gainesville; two sisters, Phyllis Myers of Lockhaven, Penn., and Susan Dessenberger of Reedville, Va.; and her former husband, Robert C. Nefzger of Gainesville. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Ronald McDonald House or the Meals on Wheels Program at the Volunteer Center of Alachua County.

Dorothy Elizabeth West Reynolds

Dorothy Elizabeth West Reynolds of Gainesville died Saturday at Shands at the University of Florida following complications after a brief illness. She was 68.

Mrs. Reynolds was born in Manchester, England, and lived most of her married life in Rochester, N.Y. She and her husband retired to Gainesville nine years ago.

Survivors include her husband, George Reynolds of Gainesville; a daughter, Juliet Reynolds Mendola of Rochester; two sons, Stephen Reynolds and Mark Reynolds, both of Rochester; a brother, Peter West of Manchester; and four grandchildren. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to any charity that holds significance to the giver.

Herbert Robert Schilling Jr.

OLD TOWN -- Herbert Robert Schilling Jr. of Old Town died suddenly Sunday. He was 67.

Mr. Schilling was born in Erie, Penn., and moved to Old Town from Largo six years ago.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received the Good Conduct Metal.

He was a carpenter.

Mr. Schilling was a member of the American Legion Post No. 273 in Maderia.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Schilling of Old Town; a daughter, Kim Stanka of Largo; four sons, James Schilling, Tim Schilling and Richard Schilling, all of Largo, and Joseph Schilling of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters, Mary Alice Volkmar of Leesburg and June Samick of Erie; and a grandchild.

Charles Duane Caldwell

Charles Duane Caldwell of Gainesville died Friday in his home. He was 54.

Mr. Caldwell was born in Coral Gables and moved to Gainesville 25 years ago. He was a facility technician with BellSouth, attended Miami Dade Community College, was a member of the 1964 Coral Gables High School state track championship team and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. Mr. Caldwell was an avid animal lover and outdoors enthusiast.

Survivors include one sister, Patricia C. Harrison of Miami; and one brother, Roger K. Caldwell of Orange Park.

John C. Cannon

STEINHATCHEE -- John C. Cannon of Steinhatchee died Friday in Steinhatchee. He was 63.

Mr. Cannon was born in Frostproof and moved to Steinhatchee from Winter Haven in 1970. He was a contractor and carpenter, a member of the Steinhatchee Lions Club, attended Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church of Cross City, and enjoyed music and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Voncille Cannon of Steinhatchee; his mother, Dollie Anderson Cannon of Frostproof; two sons, John Christopher Cannon and Noland Craig Cannon, both of Steinhatchee; two daughters, Carrie Cannon-Duran and Julie Stanley, both of Steinhatchee; six brothers, L.A. Cannon and Joey Cannon, both of Frostproof, Jimmy Cannon of Lake City, Jerry Cannon of Palmetto, Morris Cannon of Brevard, N.C., and Bill Cannon of Sarasota; four sisters, Kathleen Dunham, Shirley Cannon and Barbara Ellis, all of Frostproof, and Glenda Johns of Winter Haven; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Samuel L. Jones

Samuel L. Jones of Gainesville died Tuesday at the Alachua Nursing Center. He was 75.

Mr. Jones was born in Gainesville and was a lifelong resident. He was superintendent of maintenance for the University of Florida and attended Alachua County public schools. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Jones of Gainesville; one brother, Lawrence Cottman of St. Petersburg; and four grandchildren.

Lela Lackey

Lela Lackey of Gainesville died Saturday in Gainesville. She was 85.

Mrs. Lackey was born in Talledega, Ala., and moved to Gainesville in 1969 from Ragland, Ala., in 1969. She was a waitress and a Baptist.

Survivors include one daughter, Polly Norton of Gainesville; two sons, Bobby Norman and Jimmy Norman, both of Tucson, Ariz; four sisters, Bernice Highfield and Camille Thurman, both of Talladega, Gertrude Blackwell of Mount Holly, N.C., and Nona Temes of Munford, Ala., and one brother, Hugh L. Lackey of Munford.

Charlotte Edna Langford

NEWBERRY -- Charlotte Edna Langford of Newberry died Saturday at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville. She was 74.

Mrs. Langford was born in Savannah, Ga. and moved to Gainesville 10 years ago from Orlando. She was a homemaker and a member of Newberry Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel W. Langford of Newberry; two daughters, Earline Hack of Sanford and Sandy Shea of Clermont; two brothers, Morris Falagan and J.W. Falagan, both of Orlando; two sisters, Betty Lee and Katherine Morski, both of Orlando; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Vanice Townsend Parker

Vanice Townsend Parker of Cross Creek died Saturday in Gainesville. She was 86.

Mrs. Parker was born in Bell and moved to Cross City from Jacksonville 25 years ago. She was a teacher and attended Citra Methodist Church.

Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her brother, James Parker. Survivors include her husband, Truman W. Parker of Cross Creek; one daughter, Sue Hightower of Jacksonville; and one grandson.

Paul Markey Riherd

Paul Markey Riherd of Gainesville died Saturday night of an apparent heart attack while visiting his son in Lake Butler. He was 72.

Mr. Riherd was born in Lake Butler and moved to Gainesville from Lake Butler in 1996. He was president and chairman of Farmers and Dealers Bank from 1964 until 1993, was president and chairman of Riherd Bank Holding Co., was a former director of CNB Bank Inc. and was director of Bankers Bancorporation of Florida from 1994-96, winning the distinguished service award in 1996.

Mr. Riherd was co-owner of Howard and Riherd Construction Co. of Lake Butler and was owner of Riherd Insurance Agency in Lake Butler. He was a member of the Lake Butler Development Authority and Westside Baptist Church of Gainesville. He was a former member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Lake Butler.

Mr. Riherd graduated from Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., in 1946, and the University of Florida College of Business Administration in 1951, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He was a served in the Pacific theater for the U.S. Army in World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a former Lake Butler mayor and city commissioner, a Union County commissioner and a member of the Lake Butler Fire Department, the Lake Butler Rotary Club, the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council, the Union County Chamber of Commerce -- winning the community service award in 1994, the Suwannee River Economic Council and the Florida Bankers Association, winning the meritorious service award in 1994.

Mr. Riherd was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelly Wilson Riherd Griffis, and one brother, Robert M. Riherd of High Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Phillips Carroll Riherd of Gainesville; one son, Thomas Malcolm Riherd II of Lake Butler; three daughters, Martha "Mari" Riherd Weller of Nashville, Tenn., Brooke R. Douglas of Columbus, Ga., and Harriett Haynes of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, John Riherd of Daytona Beach; two sisters, Lucile R. Geiger of Gainesville and Frances R. White of Lake Butler; and 11 grandchildren.

Charles E. Powell

Charles E. "Chuck" Powell of Gainesville died Saturday at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. He was 66.

Mr. Powell was born in Freedom, Pa., and has lived in Gainesville since 1990. He graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, was a retired school administrator for the Lisbon Exempted School District in Lisbon, Ohio, and was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Powell was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Ann Powell, in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Powell of Gainesville; two daughters, Kimberly Powell Blank and Kristen Powell, both of Columbus, Ohio; one stepson, Allen Johnson of Lutz; three brothers, Donald E. Powell of Freedom, Richard E. Powell of Issaquah, Wash., and George Powell of Collinswood, N.J.; two sisters, Doris Powell Raftery of Ashland, Ky., and Faye Powell Riley of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one granddaughter.

Eva E. Sapp

JASPER -- Eva E. Sapp of Jasper died Sunday at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City following a lengthy illness. She was 83.

Mrs. Sapp was born in Zephyrhills and was a longtime Jasper resident. She was in the restaurant business and was a member of the Jasper Church of God.

Survivors include two sons, Billy C. Law of Vero Beach and Robert B. Sapp of Gainesville; one daughter, Loretta Marchant of Jasper; one sister, Deloris Hackle of Jasper; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Thomas Edwin Saxton

FANNING SPRINGS -- Thomas Edwin Saxton of Fanning Springs died Tuesday in Gainesville.

Mr. Saxton moved to Fanning Springs from Corning, N.Y., in 1995. He was a carpet installer and a member of the Bear's Den in Fanning Springs. He enjoyed boating.

Survivors include his former wife, Deloris Saxton of Fanning Springs; and one son, Joshua Saxton of Cross City.

James Frederick Wills

LAKE BUTLER -- James Frederick Wills died Saturday at Shands at Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville. He was 57.

Mr. Wills was an assistant accounting professor at Santa Fe Community College who received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from the University of Florida.

Mr. Wills, a Baptist, was born in Greene County, Tenn. and moved to Lake Butler in 1970 from Palatka.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Buckles.

Survivors include his wife, Neely Bigham Wills of Lake Butler; a daughter, Jonnie Wells of Palm Coast; his mother, Winona Buckles of Kingsport, Tenn.; two brothers, Stephen Buckles of Kingsport and Samuel Buckles of Atlanta; and two grandchildren.
