Murilene Townsend

BRANFORD -- Murilene Townsend died Tuesday the Hospice House of Gainesville following a brief illness. She was 64.

A native of Trenton, Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker and a member of Hatch Bend Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Jerkins of Lake City and June McLeod of Branford; sisters, Yvonne Kutzkie of Jacksonville, Ollie Mays of Old Town, Margie Lytte of Branford and Wanda Nichols of Newberry; brothers, James Lytte of Lake City, Elvoy Dees and Bobby Lytte, both of Old Town, Arnold Dees of Jacksonville, Thomas Dees of Archer, Donnie Dees of Cross City; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John R. Salladay

John R. Salladay of Gainesville died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was 84.

Mr. Salladay was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville in 1984.

As an officer of the U.S. Navy during World War II, he was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries suffered when his ship was bombed in the South China Sea.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Franklin Avenue Methodist Church.

He graduated from Ohio State University and worked as an insurance agent.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Anita Hall Salladay of Gainesville; sons, John Michael Salladay of Granville, Ohio, Jeffrey Hall Salladay of Boca Raton; sisters, Jean Salladay Frehse of Spring Hill and Joan Salladay Shoyer of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and a great-grandchildren.

Flossie C. Covert

Flossie C. Covert, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Tuesday in Gainesville. She was 87.

Mrs. Covert was a homemaker and a member of Old Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the prayer band, the Saturday Night Gospel Train, the Pallbearers Lodge and the deaconess board.

Survivors include sons Willie Covert of Gainesville and Buddy Dingle of Newport News, Va.; daughters Theresa Nelson, Burnether Anderson, Rejoice Brazil, Delores Golden, Annie Covert and Ruth Strawder, all of Gainesville; 45 grandchildren; 86 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

Violet Townsend Crosby

STARKE - Violet Townsend Crosby, a longtime resident of Starke, died Tuesday at Windsor Manor Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was 84.

Mrs. Crosby was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Starke, the Starke Women's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary of Starke.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Lee Crosby Jr. of Starke; daughters Anita Jane Porter and Ruth Nelson, both of Atlanta; a son, Dale A. Crosby of Orlando; sisters Marie Glisson of Keystone Heights, Grace Lowber of Monroe, Wash., Hazel Collins of Jenkinsburg, Ga., and Claire Townsend of Atlanta; and seven grandchildren.

Albertha Sinclair Dean

Albertha "Pinkey" Sinclair Dean, a lifelong resident of Gainesville, died Friday at Shands at AGH following a sudden illness. She was 49.

Mrs. Dean was a Baptist and a custodian at Howard Bishop Middle School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Dean Sr.

Survivors include her companion, Charles Leon of Gainesville; a daughter, Erica Bell of Gainesville; sons Eric Bell and Frank S. Dean Jr., both of Gainesville; sisters Arlene and Mary Helen Ellis, both of Gainesville; a brother, Fred Ellis of Gainesville; and three grandchildren.

Thelma Guyton

CHIEFLAND - Thelma Guyton of Chiefland died Saturday at North Florida Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 69.

Mrs. Guyton was born in Cordele, Ga., and moved to Chiefland 43 years ago.

She was a homemaker. She attended Potters House Church of God in Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Guyton Sr.

Survivors include sons Charlie and Jimmie Guyton, both of Moore Haven, John Guyton Jr. of Chiefland, Samuel Guyton of Pensacola and Wesley Guyton of Detroit; daughters Juanita Wilcox of Okeechobee and Geneva Guyton of Chiefland; sisters Dorothy Mack of Chiefland and Fannie Stewart of Cordele; brothers Elijah Carter of Chiefland, James, Isiah and Paul Carter, all of Cordele, and Arthur Carter of Stewart; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ralph Edward Peters

Ralph Edward Peters of Gainesville died Wednesday at his residence following a brief illness. He was 51.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., he moved to Gainesville at the age of 18.

He was a firefighter for the city of Gainesville. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include a daughter, Nikole Peters of Gainesville; a son, Ryker Peters of Gainesville; a brother, Donald Peters of Gainesville; sisters Shirley Peters of Winter Park and Lynda Peters of Texas.

Harry Purdy

Harry "Nick" Purdy of Bayonet Point in Pasco County died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 69.

Mr. Purdy was born in Upper Marlboro, Md., and moved to Florida in 1958.

He retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Gainesville in 1983.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war.

He was Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Fay Purdy of Bayonet Point; a son, John Purdy of Guyton, Ga.; daughters Melissa Goldthwaite of South Hampton, N.H., Jennifer Hatfield of Trenton and Laura Grossman of Hudson; brothers James Purdy of Black Mountain, N.C., and William Purdy of Upper Marlboro; and nine grandchildren.

Lottie Mae Reichert

MONTICELLO - Lottie Mae Reichert died Wednesday in Monticello. She was 90.

Mrs. Reichert was born in Hogansville, Ga., and moved to Monticello from Gainesville in 1985.

She was a retired cashier with Wise's Drug Store in Gainesville.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph "Rick" Reichert of Monticello; a son, Joe C. Reichert Jr. of Lake Butler; a brother, George F. Davis of Gainesville; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Betty Frances Sceals

LAKE CITY - Betty Frances Sceals died Tuesday at her residence following an extended illness. She was 64.

Mrs. Sceals was born in Auburn, Ga., and moved to Lake City from Rochelle, Ga., 44 years ago. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include sons Larry, Marty, Robin and Tim Sceals, all of Lake City, and Gary Sceals of Gainesville; daughters Diane Reid and Melissa Sceals, both of Lake City, Debra Griffis of Sanderson and Teri Sceals of Live Oak; her mother, Anna Hart of Rochelle, Ga.; brothers Billy Hart of Branford and Gerald and Tommy Hart of Rochelle, Ga.; sisters Louise Fender of Sarasota, Marilois Yancey of Abbey, Ga., Joyce Willisford of Rochelle, Ga., Linda Fuller of Atlanta and Pat Hart of Georgia; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mitchell Daniel Shadd

LAKE BUTLER - Mitchell Daniel Shadd died Wednesday at his brother's residence following an extended illness. He was 40.

Mr. Shadd was born in Starke and lived in Orlando and Fort Pierce before moving to Lake Butler 20 years ago. He worked at the Gilman Sawmill. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Ocoee.

Survivors include his mother, Carolyn Peeples Jerrard of Crystal River; his father, Leslie Shadd of Brooker; brothers Darrell Shadd of Lake Butler and Jeff Shadd of Orlando; and sisters Bonnie Smith, Lori Archer and Becky Jordan, all of Lake Butler.

Yoshiko O. Umpleby

FORT McCOY - Yoshiko O. Umpleby died Sunday at Shands at the University of Florida. She was 73.

Mrs. Umpleby was born in Miyagiken, Japan, and moved to Fort McCoy from Fort Myers in 1976. She was a self-employed seamstress and a Publix employee.

She enjoyed bingo and sewing. She was a fan of the Florida Gators and the Miami Dolphins.

Mrs. Umpleby was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Umpleby.

Survivors include sons George and Ron H. Umpleby, both of Gainesville, and Donald F. and Kenny R. Umpleby, both of Ocala; a daughter, Janet L. Siskay of Tacoma, Wash.; several siblings in Japan; and nine grandchildren.
