Zechariah Marvin Smith, an infant, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Survivors include his parents, Jesse A. and Heather L. Smith of Dunnellon; brother, Jesse A. Smith Jr. of Dunnellon; maternal grandparents, John and Barbara Rowe of Dunnellon; paternal grandmother, Sue Smith of Fairfield, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Eulice Summerlin, 91 Inglis

Eulice D. Summerlin, 91, Inglis, died Monday, July 21, 2003, in Inglis after an extended illness.

She was born May 14, 1912, in Douglas, Ga., to John T. and Sarah Douglas. She was one of seven children. She came here from Orlando six years ago.

She was a homemaker and she was Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Parley Summerlin, and two daughters, Elizabeth Summerlin and Edna Summerlin Roberts.

Survivors include one son, Veryl Summerlin of Webster; three daughters, Imogene Jorday of Waycross, Ga., Jo Ann S. Clemons and Kay Walters, both of Inglis; a brother, James B. Douglas of Alexandria, La.; a sister, Ellamae D. Pope of Waycross, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Marguerite 'Peggy' Bowers, 78 Hernando

Marguerite M. "Peggy" Bowers, 78, Hernando, died Monday, July 21, 2003, in Hernando.

She was born March 21, 1925, in Pottsville, Pa., to J. Hyden and Ethel Moyer. She moved to Hernando from Inglis in 1984.

She was a registered nurse for 13 years.

Mrs. Bowers was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hernando.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Bowers, on Oct. 29, 2001.

Survivors include one son, William Hyden Bowers Sr. of Greentown, Pa.; two daughters, Bonnie Madgziak of Ambler, Pa., and Constance Lee Bowers-Capen of Burnsville, Minn.; one sister, Ethel Baxter of Pottsville, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Jean Campbell, 91 Lecanto

Dr. Jean Holmes Campbell died June 20, 2003, at Brentwood Retirement Center in Lecanto.

Dr. Campbell was born June 22, 1911, in Bound Brook, N.J. She was the daughter of Louis Roscoe Campbell and Amy Housel Campbell of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

She is remembered for her career path that went from nursing student to superintendent of nursing at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. Her search for continuing self-development took her from undergraduate student to master's degree recipient at New York University.

In 1956, she received the Doctor of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. The scope of her influence expanded rapidly when she joined the staff of the National League for Nursing as assistant director of the Department of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs in the same year.

In 1965, she accepted the position of chair of the Department of Nursing, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Dr. Campbell retired in 1973 and moved to Clemson, S.C., until joining her brother, the late Louis Roscoe Campbell, in Lecanto, in 1993.

Dr. Campbell is survived by a sister, Isabelle Campbell Mance of Lecanto; a nephew, Robert Louis Campbell and his wife, the Rev. Mary Louise DeWolf, of Crystal River; and a grand-nephew.

Marjorie Johnson, 89 Inverness

Marjorie B. Johnson, 89, Inverness, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003.

Born in Chicago, Ill., she moved here in 1994 from St. Petersburg.

She was former church secretary for Southminster United Presbyterian Church, Arlington Heights, Ill.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Inverness.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Johnson DePena of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Barbara Johnson Competiello of Inverness; son-in-law, John R. Competiello of Inverness; and a granddaughter, Marjorie-Lee Competiello of Inverness.

Gennaro 'Jerry' Lume, 79 Dunnellon

Gennaro "Jerry" Lume, 79, Dunnellon, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had resided in the Dunnellon area since 1988, formerly of East Meadow, Long Island, N.Y.

Mr. Lume was a retired department manager of communications.

A former National Guard member, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He was past master of Dunnellon Lodge No. 136 F&AM; secretary emeritus of Dunnellon Lodge No. 136 F&AM; past master of the Lodge of Research of Florida F&AM; past worthy patron of OES No. 235, Dunnellon; personal representative for the Masonic Service Association; past chairman of 15th Masonic District Association; charter member and founder of 15th Masonic Memorial Lodge; served as a volunteer for Hospice for six years; member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Ocala Scottish Rite; Ocala York Rite; Geo. Wolf Council of Allied Masonic Bodies; Rainbow Lakes Masonic Association; Wall-Rives American Legion; NRA; former member of Merchants Masonic Lodge No. 709 and America's Lodge in Long Island, N.Y.

Survivors include two daughters, Maria Lasurdo of Hicksville, N.Y., and JoAnne DiCroce of East Meadow, L.I., N.Y.; one sister, Anna Almond of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and companion, Joan Cothern of Dunnellon.

Joseph 'Joe' Bower, 76 Beverly Hills

Joseph N. "Joe" Bower, 76, Beverly Hills, died Friday, July 18, 2003, in Lecanto.

A native of Arcadia, he was born on August 25, 1926, to Joseph and Frances (Bostwick) Bower. He came here in 1982 from Miami. He was a lifelong resident of Florida.

Mr. Bower was a retired airline mechanic. He was a union official for Eastern Airlines for 27 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II.

Mr. Bower was a member of the Church of God for 60 years.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinists. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Bower of Beverly Hills; two daughters, Glenda Wood of St. Cloud, and Deborah Bradbury and her husband Luke of Inverness; two brothers, Robert Bower of Sarasota, and Judge Russell Bower of Panama City; a sister, Jean Atkins of Brevard, N.C.; four grand children; and four great-grandchildren.

Fred Hair, 79 Inverness

Fred Hair, 79, Inverness, died Friday, July 18, 2003, in Citrus Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Hair was born in Inverness on Feb. 14, 1924, to Fred G. and Frankie Davis Hair. He was a lifetime resident.

He owned and operated the Gulf Oil Distributorship in Inverness for many years and was an associate with Kiser Realty.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Active in the community for many years, he served as past president of the City Council of Inverness and as chairman for the County Planning and Zoning Board.

He was also a member and past master of the Citrus Masonic Lodge 118, and past commander of the American Legion.

He was active in the church and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. He was a founding member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Inverness where he was named deacon emeritus and taught Sunday school.

He currently was a member of the First Baptist Church of Inverness where he taught the Fellowship Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Franklin, in 1941.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Willie L. Hair; three daughters, Jennice Wilson and husband Fred of Ocala, Martha Ann Hinkle and husband Ken of Inverness, and Faye Hoff and husband David of Hernando; a brother, Rheuben Hair and wife Jonnie of Crystal River; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jimmie James, 75 Homosassa

Jimmie James, 75, Homosassa, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Crystal River.

He was born Feb. 11, 1928, in Kingston, Tenn., to Arlo Howard and Agnes James.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator who lived in the area most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda James of Homosassa; and four grandchildren.
