Catherine 'Katy' Kinder, 81 Floral City

Catherine Virginia "Katy" Kinder, 81, Floral City, died Sunday Aug. 17, 2003, in Floral City.

Born Aug. 2, 1922, in Gallagher, W.Va., to Holbert and Ada Dewees, she came here from Allen Creek, W.Va., in 1961.

She was a cook at Woody's Bar-B-Que in Floral City.

She was Baptist.

Mrs. Kinder was preceded in death by her husband, Joe H. Kinder Sr., on Jan. 30, 1967; and son Joe H. Kinder Jr., on Jan. 20, 1996.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandra McClure of Floral City, Joan Haag of Tampa, Janet Walters of Inverness, and Ann Corning of Potwin, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Vera Lane, 87 Texarkana, Texas

Vera Elizabeth Totty Lane, 87, Texarkana, Texas, formerly of Crystal River, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003.

She was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Perry County, Tenn. She lived in Citrus County from 1965 to 1975.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moores Lane and the Joy Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Lane was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert L. Lane; daughter Elizabeth (Betty) McAllister; a granddaughter, Melanie Lane Long; and a brother, Robert Allen Totty.

Survivors include her son, Gilbert L. and Marilyn Lane of Texarkana, Texas; three grandsons, Steve (Cindy) McAllister of Tyler, Texas, Randy (Debbie) McAllister of Memphis, Tenn., and Alan (Brittany) Lane of Tyler, Texas; two granddaughters, Crisney Lane of Capetown, South Africa, and April (Rick) Wegman of Stuart; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece.

Ralph Snow, 82 Ocala

Ralph W. Snow, 82, Ocala, died Sunday Aug. 17, 2003, in Ocala.

Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., he came to Ocala from Brooklyn, Mich., 13 years ago. He was a seasonal resident in Lecanto in the 1980s.

Mr. Snow retired as a dispatcher from City Car Releasing in Detroit, Mich., after 28 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II.

He was a Christian.

He was a member of VFW Angela Santos Post 4781 in Ocala and a former member of the Loyal Order of Eagles in Brooklyn, Mich.

Mr. Snow was preceded in death by his wife Lulu Snow on June 16, 2003.

Survivors include his son, Robert W. (Kathlyn) Snow of Clinton, Mich.; daughter Mary Ann (Ronald) Peake of Plainfield, Ill.; stepson Alan Prudhomme of Loxahatchee; stepdaughter Yvonne Tice of Illinois; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Charles 'Wes' Mewborn, 42 Beverly Hills

Charles "Wes" Mewborn, 42, Beverly Hills, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, in Lecanto.

He was born Oct. 5, 1960, in Lufkin, Texas, to H. Charles Mewborn and Sara Henry. He came here from Palm Harbor nine years ago.

Mr. Mewborn was a dock worker for Wal-Mart Company and served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was dedicated to the United Way and the Children's Miracle Network through his work at Wal-Mart. He loved fishing and motorcycles.

He was a member of Palm Harbor United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Deborah Mewborn of Beverly Hills; two sons, Charles Mewborn Jr. and Dylan Lynch, both of Beverly Hills; two daughters, Brianna Mewborn of Clearwater and Pamela Lynch of Beverly Hills; his mother, Sara Henry of Homosassa; four sisters, Joan Berry of Lecanto, Sara Cutts of Homosassa, Patricia Chesler of Ohio and Michelle Lyles of Jacksonville; and many nieces, nephews.

Azalia Mayfield, 96 Inverness

Azalia Mayfield, 96, Inverness, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, in Inverness.

She was born Jan. 12, 1907, in Arapahoe, Neb., to Israel and Rhoda Cawthra. She came here from Corozel, Puerto Rico.

Mrs. Mayfield was a homemaker. She was Methodist.

Surviving are her son, Milton Doolittle of Corozal, Puerto Rico; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bert Oles, 82 Inverness

Bert Oles, 82, Inverness, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Avante at Inverness.

Born April 27, 1921, in Toledo, Ohio, to Roman and Anntonina Sokolowski, he came here in 1984 from Battle Creek, Mich.

Mr. Oles was in research and product development with the Kellogg Cereal Company with more than 40 years of service.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was Catholic.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Oles.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Bartlett Oles; son, William H. Oles of Orleans, Mich.; daughter, Bobbie Anne Kline of Lake City, Mich.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Skye Ann-Marie Spindler, infant, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, in Inverness.

She was born Aug. 12, 2003, in Inverness to James R. Spindler and Helen N. McAllister, both of Homosassa.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Weaver of Homosassa; maternal grandfather, Patrick F. McAllister of Homosassa; maternal grandmother, Sheryl McAllister of Homosassa; paternal grandfather, David Riley of Dunnellon; and paternal grandmother, Diane Spindler of Inverness.

Henry Walker, 93 Beverly Hills

Henry Clinton Walker, 93, Beverly Hills, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, in Woodland Terrace of Hernando.

A native of Litton, Miss., he was born May 5, 1910. He came to Florida in 1971 from Taylor Mich.

Mr. Walker was a retired millwright for Allied Chemical Co. in Detroit, Mich., and a member of the Crystal River Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Retha Davis Walker of Beverly Hills; one son, Henry A. Walker of Westland, Mich.; three daughters, Virginia Sawyer of Pocahontas, Ark., Maxine Graham of Citrus Hills, Hernando, and Ruby B. Fox of Inverness; four sisters, Esther Bailey and Gertha Ward, both of Florence, Miss., Eunice Bailey of Leland, Miss., and Alice Bawcom of Humboldt, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren.

Gladys M. Cottrell, 99

Gladys McClain Cottrell, 99, of Wildwood died Thursday, July 24, 2003. A native of Moniak, Ga., she lived in Sumter County most of her life. Ms. Cottrell was retired from Parrett Egg Farm. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Oxford. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Ms. Cottrell were held at Old Town Cemetery, Old Town, on Saturday, July 26, 2003. Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, provided information.

Martha P. Davis, 61, of Lake Panasoffkee, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Wildwood. Ms. Davis was born in Tallahassee. She was a graphic artist. Ms. Davis was a Protestant. Survivors include her mother, Mary Ellen Williamson of Tennessee; brother, Daniel Edward Deter of Cecelia, Ky.; sister, Endean Deter of Nashville, Tenn. Purcell Funeral Home of Bushnell provided information.

Embree E. Fielding, 93, Railroad Engineer

Embree E. Fielding, 93, of Mabel, died Saturday, July 26, 2003. A native of Linden, he lived in Umatilla with his wife and family before moving to Tampa where he was employed as a railroad engineer on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad for over 30 years. He was a member of Nebraska Avenue United Methodist Church in Tampa until 1994 when he and his wife returned to Sumter County and joined the Linden United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. Mr. Fielding was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, LaVerne. Survivors include daughters, Sandra Fussell and Julie Fielding of Mabel; grandchildren, Shannon, Michael, Michelle, Jason and Morgan; sisters, Myrle Russ of Orlando and Marguerite Nordman of Deland; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Viewing and visitation was on Tuesday, July 29, 2003. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Linden United Methodist Church. Kurfiss Funeral Home provided information.

Edward Lasky, 73, retired owner of Sumter Journal

Edward Lasky, 73, of Lake Panasoffkee, died Saturday, July 26, 2003. A native of Milwaukee, Wis., he moved to Sumter County in 1973 from St. Petersburg. Mr. Lasky was the retired owner of the Sumter Journal Newspaper and a member of the American Legion and DAV. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the First United Methodist of Lake Panasoffkee. Survivors include his wife Shirley; three daughters, Tracy Lasky of Lake Panasoffkee, Carla Prevatt of Okahumpka and Denise Kelly of Silvis, Ill.; two brothers, Leroy Lasky of Port Orange and Norman Lasky of Wauwatosa, Wis.; two sisters, Dorothy Biondi of Lake Panasoffkee and Marlene Brunner of Waukesha, Wis.; granddaughter, Lisa; great-granddaughter, Emma. Services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Purcell funeral Home Chapel, Bushnell. The Reverend Emery King officiated. Place of interment was Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with Military Honors rendered by Marine Corps League #708. Purcell Funeral Home, Bushnell, provided information.
