Alan G. Patterson, 56, of Ocala

Alan G. Patterson, of Ocala, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Sylvia's Hospice House. A native of Torrington, Conn., he moved here from Westfield, Mass., in 1990. He was 56.

Mr. Patterson was a salesman for Palm Chevrolet. He was a graduate of Westfield Vocational High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Susan M. Patterson of Ocala; daughter, Jennifer Patterson of Meriden, Conn.; mother, Charlotte Patterson of Ocala; brothers, John Patterson of Westfield, Mass.; and sisters, Cynthia Reynolds of Westfield and Carolyn Janssen of New Port Richey.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Marion County.

Shirley J. Bateman, 69

Shirley J. Bateman, 69, passed away at home on Oct. 1, 2003. A native of Ontario, Canada, she moved here in 1951 from Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Bateman retired from the Marion County School Board where she was the Guidance Secretary at Dunnellon High School for 27 years. She attended Grace Episcopal Church in Ocala.

While at Dunnellon High School, she was known for being a "champion" of the students.

To honor and preserve her generosity of spirit, a fund has been started at Dunnellon High School.

Survivors include a son, Brian D. Bateman of LaPorte, Texas; two daughters, Becky Thomas-Ray of Ocala and Mary Lee Renfroe of Tampa; son-in-law Billy Ray of Ocala; daughter-in-law, Laura Bateman of LaPorte, Texas; four grandchildren, Randall Shaw Thomas, Justa Briann Thomas, Zachary Taylor Montgomery, and McKenzie Layne Montgomery, all of Ocala; brothers, Jeff Eby of Houston, Texas and Dr. Tony Eby of Corpus Christie, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dunnellon High School, The Shirley J. Bateman 'Shekel' Fund.

Arthur King, 88

Arthur Dean "Bud" King Jr., 88, of Centralia, Illinois, formerly of Mattoon, Illinois and Dunnellon, died on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1915, in Mattoon, a son of Arthur Daniel and Gertrude Hannah (Miller) King.

He married Irma Peterson on Nov. 6, 1938.

Mr. King retired from General Electric. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mattoon and Centralia.

He served as township clerk and precinct committeeman. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster and counselor for many years.

Mr. King was a life member of Moose Lodge 803 where he was a multiple national champion on the Ritual Team.

He taught Sunday school class for many years and particularly enjoyed leading the singing whenever he could.

Mr. King was an able and avid fisherman who taught many of his grandchildren the joy of fishing.

A man who stood out in a crowd and a national leader who led by example all of his life, but his crowning achievement and greatest joy was being a husband, dad and grandpa.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Irma of Centralia; three sons, Dan King and wife Jodi of Tolono, Ill., Scott King and wife Carol of rural Greenup, Ill., and Bill King and wife Anna of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Leagene Jones and husband Ken of Centralia and Susan King of Riverside, Ill.; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, John King and wife Mina of Morriston, Fla.; two sisters, Georgia Austin of Morriston, Fla., and Frances Kellam of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Memorial gifts may be made to Boy Scout Troop #57 of Mattoon, Ill.

Jane Pawlicki, 73

Jane Fairbanks Pawlicki, 73, of Dunnellon, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, in Ocala. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., she came here in 1983.

Mrs. Pawlicki was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Pawlicki of Dunnellon; sister, Barbara Turner of Tonawanda, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Lois J. Reedy, 73

Lois J. Reedy, 73, of Dunnellon, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Dunnellon. A native of Springbrook, Iowa, she moved here in 1999 from Bellevue, Iowa.

Mrs. Reedy was a retired health care technician and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

Survivors include her sons, Stanley J. and Craig M. Reedy, both of Clearwater; daughters, M.K. Reedy of New York, Renee Reedy of Dunnellon and Andrea Reedy-Monaco of Ridgefield, Conn.; brother, Wayne Kilburg of Dubuque, Iowa; sisters, Darleen Kral of Bensenville, Ill., and Wanda Remakel of Dubuque; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Reedy.

Flora Shannah, 89

Flora Shannah, 89, of Dunnellon, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Ocala Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Gulf Hammock, she moved here 70 years ago.

Mrs. Shannah was a homemaker and a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, Ernest Brown Sr. of Tampa; and sons, Robert Brown, Ernest Brown Jr., and Jame Hodge, all of Tampa.

Helene L. McBrayer, 94

Helene Leutenagger McBrayer, 94, of Oviedo, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in Oviedo. She was born in Denver, Colo., and came to Florida from Silver Spring, Md. in 1965. She lived in Rainbow Springs for 35 years.

Mrs. McBrayer was a registered nurse.

She was a member of Rainbow Lakes United Methodist Church, Rainbow Lakes Hospital Association, Rainbow Lakes Civic Club and Rainbow Lakes Garden Club. She was Methodist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Benjamin E. McBrayer.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Lewis McBrayer of Lincoln Park, Mich., and James Donald McBrayer of Oviedo; a daughter, Sandra Ann Wetmore of Bradenton; sister, Ruth Mitchel of Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

William W. Brooks, 80, of Marion Landing

William W. Brooks, of Marion Landing, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Estelle's Hospice House. A native of Santa Monica, Calif., he moved here in 1987. He was 80.

Mr. Brooks was a retired accountant for Garrett Corp. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, past president of Marion Landing Homeowner's Association, and a performer for the Little Theatre. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; sons, Robert Brooks of Escondido, Calif., and Ronald Brooks of Petrolla, Ontario; brother, John Brooks of Banning, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Marion county.

V.T. Gwyn, 78, of OTOW

V.T. Gwyn, of OTOW, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Estelle's House, a hospice facility in Ocala. Born in Adrian, Mich., he came here from Tampa in 1986. He was 78.

Mr. Gwyn was a retired teacher of 30 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central University and his Masters degree from the University of Michigan.

He was a member of Ocala West United Methodist Church and enjoyed macrame' and craft making.

He was a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Gerry; four sons, David Gwyn of Largo, Richard Gwyn of Fairfield, Calif., Ronald Gwyn of Cape Cod, Mass., and Ralph Gwyn of Kennesaw, Ga.; a sister, Olivee Mannlein of Dundee, Mich.; five grandchildren, Melissa, Joshua, Rachel and Michael Gwyn and Avi Berko.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Marion County, Inc., P.O. Box 4860, Ocala, Fla. 34478-4860.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, at 4 p.m. at the Ocala West United Methodist Church with the Rev. George A. Buie, III, officiating.

Burial will be at the Garden of Memories in Tampa.

Helene L. McBrayer, 94, of Oviedo

Helene Leutenegger McBrayer, 94, of Oviedo, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in Oviedo.
