Grace Gubbins, 89 Lecanto

Grace E. Gubbins, 89, Lecanto, formerly of Beverly Hills, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Lecanto.

A native of New York, N.Y., she was born Dec. 10, 1913, to Joseph and Minnie (Dorsch) Jubo. She came here from Flushing, N.Y., 20 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills.

She loved crocheting and reading. She was an avid bingo player.

Mrs. Gubbins was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gubbins; two sons, Robert Gubbins and Terrence Gubbins; and granddaughter, Susan Gubbins.

Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn G. Gubbins of Flushing, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Trygve Knutsen, 88 Ocala

Trygve Knutsen, 88, Ocala, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Ocala Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Eidanger, Norway, he moved from Chicago, Ill., to Ocala in 1983.

He was a retired baker.

He was a member of Joy Lutheran Church; Scandinavian Club of Ocala; life member of the Sons of Norway; and served as host for Pine and Oak Run Developments. He loved boating and entertaining.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ingrid Knutsen of Ocala; sister, Solveig Knutsen; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Joy Evangelical Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.

Florence Mead, 91 Merritt Island

Florence Marie Mead, 91, Merritt Island, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Merritt Island.

Born in Columbiana, Ohio, she moved to Dunnellon 45 years ago from East Palistine, Ohio.

She was a self-employed store owner. She worked in dry cleaning and laundry. She was retired.

She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Dunnellon.

Mrs. Mead was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Mead Sr.; and son, Charles B. Mead Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Murray of Dunnellon, and Nancy McDilda of Merritt Island; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Susana Umanos, 78 Hernando

Susana M. Umanos, 78, Hernando, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 in Hernando.

Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Agoo-La-Union, Phillipines, to Tiburcio and Maria Mamuyac, she came here from Lavonia, Mich., in 1990.

She was a homemaker.

She attended the Church of the Nazarene, Hernando.

Survivors include her husband, Romeo O. Umanos of Hernando; two sons, Henry A. Umanos of Lake Orion, Mich., and E. Jerome Umanos of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Ricardo Mamuyac of Detroit, Mich., sister, Felicidas Mamuyac of Agoo-La-Union, Phillipines; and four grandchildren.

Thelma R. Andrews, 73, L.P.N.

Thelma R. Andrews, 73, of Wildwood, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, in Wildwood. Born in Sebring, Fla., she lived in Wildwood most of her life. Mrs. Andrews retired from Leesburg Regional Medical Center in 1995 where she was an L.P.N. She was Baptist. Survivors include her husband, Mark; sons, Clarence Sutton of Virginia Beach, Va., Lee Harrison of Covintan, Ga.; daughter, Donna Law-Flannery of Oxford, Fla.; sister, Sharon Aten of Wildwood; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Nov. 1 at the First Baptist Church of Lady Lake with Rev. Paul Harsh officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Lake and Sumter County. Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, handled the arrangements.

James 'Coleman' Banks, 70, Funeral director

James "Coleman" Banks, 70, of Wildwood, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Ocala. A native of Vidalia, Ga., he moved here in 1966 from Leesburg. Mr. Banks was an associated funeral director with Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, serving Lake and Sumter counties since 1963. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War with the 82nd Airborne; member of Eastern Star, Wildwood Masonic Lodge; Shriners; VFW; American Legion; Scottish Rites; past president for Wildwood Lions Club; previously a Wildwood City Commissioner, and active with Little League in the past. Survivors include his wife, Peggy of 48 years; daughters, Cheryl Conder of Charlotte, N.C., Paige Mahan of Leesburg, Deidra Richardson of Wildwood; brothers, Chester and Donald Banks, both of Vidalia, Ga.; sisters, Pearl Shepherd of Fruitland Park, Eudean Miles of Greenwood, S.C., Vera Kearney of Jacksonville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Nov. 2 at Oxford Assembly of God Church with Rev. Derrel Strickland, Bro. Claud McAdams and Rev. Lock officiating. Buriel was at Pine Level Cemetery, Oxford. Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, handled the arrangements.

C.B. 'Pinky' Havens, 66, Mechanic

C.B. "Pinky" Havens, 66, of Lake Panasoffkee, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003. A native of Huntington, W.Va., he was a resident of Sumter County since 1986, formerly of Pinellas Park. Mr. Havens was a mechanic in the sheet metal industry. He was a Navy veteran and Baptist. He was a member of the Bushnell Masonic Lodge, AmVets and the Moose Lodge. He was a life member of the VFW 1084 and the DAV 93, American Legion Eagles #392. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; five sons, Joseph Havens of St. Petersburg, Michael Havens of Seminole, George Havens of Lake Panasoffkee, Elmer Havens of Bushnell, and Sean Havens of Clearwater; six grandchildren and two nieces. Interment was at the Florida National cemetery in Bushnell. Purcell Funeral Home, Bushnell, handled the arrangements.

Laddie T. Kemp, 47, Contract Manager

Laddie Thomas Kemp, 47, of Eustis, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, in Orlando. A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., he was a resident of Eustis since 1999, moving there from Webster. Mr. Kemp was a graduate of Central Gwinnett High School and attended DeKalb College in Ga. He was a Contract Manager with the Turnpike Industry, was employed by Jacobs, and was retired from the State of Florida Department of Transportation. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Burke Kemp of Eustis; three sons, Seth Kemp of Tampa, Wilkes Kemp of Winter Park and Aubin Kemp of Eustis; two stepsons, Michael Strong of Webster and Jason Strong of the U.S. Navy; two grandchildren; father and mother, W.T. and Edith Kemp of Grayson, Ga.; sister, Michelle Roberson of Cartersville, Ga. Services were held Nov. 1 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Bushnell, with Rev. Mike King and Rev. Stan Burke officiating. Interment was at Gwinnett Memorial Park, Lawrenceville, Ga. Purcell Funeral Home, Bushnell, handled the arrangements.

Harold D. Whitten Sr., 77, Yard Supervisor

Harold Douglas Whitten Sr., 77, of Wildwood, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, in his home. A native of Nashville, Tenn., he moved to Wildwood in 1982 from Chesterland, Ohio. Mr. Whitten retired in 1982 from Conrail as a yard supervisor. He attended First Baptist Church of Lake Panasoffkee; he was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Lake Panasoffkee. He was an avid dancer and loved his family and friends. Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-laws, Harold Douglas Jr. and Denise Whitten of Lady Lake, David L. and Coleen Whitten of Chardon, Ohio, Jeffrey Allen Whitten of Fruitland Park; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and James Osborn of Hambden, Ohio; brothers and sisters, William, James, Catherine, Carol Jean and Susie, all of Toledo, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 31 at Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, with Rev. Jon King officiating. Banks/Page-Theus Funeral Home, Wildwood, handled the arrangements.

Mark W. Mahar, 78, Teacher/Principal

Mark William Mahar, 78, of Ridge Manor, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Zephyrhills. A native of Emmett, Mich., he was a resident of Central Florida for the last 10 years, formerly of Michigan. Mr. Mahar was a teacher/principal. He was an Air Force veteran serving during World War II. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Jane A.; two daughters, Susan J. Mahar of North Branch, Mich., and Suki (Mahar) Milani of Check, Va.; two grandchildren; one brother, James E. Mahar of St. Clair, Mich.; two sisters, Virginia Gallagher of W. Bloomfield, Mich., and Elaine Sullivan of Fulton, Ky.; and two grandchildren. Purcell Funeral Home, Bushnell, handled the arrangements.
