Charles White, 80 Jacksonville

Charles I. White, 80, Jacksonville, formerly of Crystal River, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in Jacksonville.

Born May 19, 1923, to Charles Alva and Wilhelmina (Wenkenbach) White, he came to Crystal River from Miami in 1976 and moved to Jacksonville three years ago.

Mr. White graduated from the University of Miami.

He retired from Bank of America in Crystal River and after retiring worked part time for H&H; Motors of Crystal River.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard Disabled Veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Mandarin United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, former member of the Crystal River Rotary Club, Crystal River Moose Lodge 2122 and West Citrus Elks Lodge 2693.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Quigley on July 31, 2003.

Survivors include wife of 56 years, Lillian (Wilson) White of Jacksonville; son, Charles G. White of Titusville; and three grandchildren.

Sandra Bertoli, 58 Hernando

Sandra Jane Bertoli, 58, Hernando, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River.

A native of Scranton, Pa., she was born on April 15, 1945, to Raymond and Shirley Little. She moved to Florida in 1971 from Long Island, N.Y.

She was employed by the Citrus County Building Department prior to retirement.

Survivors include one son, Michael Mollica of North Carolina; two daughters, Suzanne Mission of Inverness and Malissa Mollica of Beverly Hills; one brother, Richard Little of Round Rock, Texas; and two grandchildren.

James Henson, 77 Homosassa

James (Jimmy) Calvin Henson, 77, Homosassa, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala.

He was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Florence, Ala., to James Walter Henson and Willie Gertrude (Penny) Henson. He came to Homosassa 24 years ago from Detroit, Mich.

Mr. Henson was a retired electronic clinical engineer.

He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Crystal River and the Pedal Steel Guitar Association. He was an avid musician.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and after the war he served in the Coast Guard.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mildred (Phillips) Henson of Homosassa; daughter, Billie G. Henson of Riverview; grandson, Devin Henson of Riverview; brothers, Floyd Henson of Michigan, Lonnie Henson of Indiana, Gene Henson and Leon Henson, both of Alabama; sister, Nadine Ballard of Alabama; and stepmother, Helen Henson of Alabama.

Tara Houck, 28 Hernando Beach

Tara Marie Como Houck, 28, Hernando Beach, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, in Hernando Beach.

A native of Inverness, she was born on March 7, 1975.

Mrs. Houck was a professional dancer.

She attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Inverness.

She was preceded in death by her father, Anthony Como, in May 2003.

Survivors include her husband, William "Bill" Houck of Hernando Beach; son, Daniel, and two daughters, Victoria and Melissa, all of Hernando Beach; mother, Katie Como of Crystal River; three brothers, Michael Como (Michelle) of Sarasota, Anthony Como (Kristi) of Savannah, Ga., and Joseph Como of Crystal River; one sister, Marie Como of Crystal River; maternal grandmother, Mona Leighton of Beverly Hills; paternal grandmother, Mary Como of Crystal River; and several aunts and uncles.

Shirley Little, 79 Hernando

Shirley M. Little, 79, Hernando, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, in Tampa General Hospital.

A native of Scranton, Pa., she was born June 29, 1924, to Holland and Lillie Dersheiner. She moved to Florida in 1971 from Long Island, N.Y.

She was a retired secretary for the Beverly Hills Construction Company.

Survivors include son, Richard Little of Round Rock, Texas; daughter, Sandra Bertoli of Hernando; sister, Jane Dennen of Indiana; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Parker, 74 Beverly Hills

Lawrence K. "Larry" Parker, 74, Beverly Hills, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, in Beverly Hills.

Mr. Parker was born May 18, 1929, in Hammensburg, Ohio, to Ferris H. and Hulda L. (Flowers) Parker Sr. He was a resident of the Village of Bloomdale, Ohio, for more than 45 years, where he and his wife built their house. He moved here in 1999.

He retired in 1991 after 21 years as a maintenance electrician with the former Allied Signal Company of Fostoria, Ohio.

He was a past volunteer fireman, Cub Scout leader, community volunteer and served as mayor of Bloomdale in the late '50s and early '60s at which time he initiated the new Village Hall/Fire Hall.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bloomdale, Ohio; Knights of Pythius, Bloomdale, Ohio; former member of Wood Country Amateur Radio Club, Bowling Green, Ohio, and the Findlay Amateur Radio Club, Findlay, Ohio, and his call letters were W8LJR.

He loved singing, played the guitar and mandolin and had a special love for country gospel and country bluegrass music.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Jane Parker of Beverly Hills; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth L. and Day Parker of Palm Bay; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Dan Patrick of Beverly Hills; three brothers, Ferris H. Parker Jr. of Indiana, Robert Parker of Arizona and Harry Parker of Winter Park; and two sisters, Rosella Parker-Grilliot of Kansas and Mary Fern of Portage, Ohio; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Betty Sheffield, 75 Picayune, Miss.

Betty Belle Sheffield, 75, Picayune, Miss., died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at her home.

She was a native of Picayune, Miss., a retired bookkeeper and a member of First Baptist Church of Picayune, Miss.

Survivors include her husband, W.B. "Buntsy" Sheffield Jr.; daughter, Ann Marquez of Clinton, Miss.; two sons, Billy Sheffield of Picayune, Miss., and Bruce Sheffield of Lecanto; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bertha Smith, 87 Beverly Hills

Bertha Smith, 87, Beverly Hills and Windsor, Conn., died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Florida.

She was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Northfield, Vt.

She had an active life of tennis, bicycling and golf. She was an avid golfer and was the first president of the Ladies Club at Pine Hill Golf Course, formerly of Windsor, Conn. She was also club champion at Pine Hill Golf Course and at Millbrook Golf Course in Windsor for more than 15 years. She was a charter member of the Southern New England Women's Public Golf Association.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dick Smith, and her twin sister, Helen.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jim Kuszik of Florida; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard II "Red" and Phyllis Smith of Wethersfield, Conn., and Norman" Craig" and Debbie Smith of Windsor, Conn.; three grandsons; and a brother, Sam White Jr. of Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 96 Oak St., Hartford, CT 06106 or to The Montessori School of Greater Hartford, 141 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107.

William Whitty, 87 Inverness

William F. Whitty, 87, Inverness, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, in Citrus Health & Rehabilitation Center of Inverness.

A native of Woodmere, N.Y., he was born June 4, 1916, to Joseph and Ethel Whitty. He moved here in 1971 from Baldwin Harbor, N.Y.

Mr. Whitty retired from the Long Island Railroad System with 36 years of service as a trainman. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Citrus Masonic Lodge 118 and Inverness Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Whitty, March 18, 1999.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Audrey Waldron of Marshfield, Mo., and Charlotte Nilsson of Susquehanna, Pa.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
