APRIL 8, 1918 -- JULY 26, 2003
DELAND -- Lillian F. Strong, 85, of Greenland Trace, a retired nurse in Indiana, died Saturday at Majestic Oaks at John Knox Village, Orange City.
Mrs. Strong was born in Williamsport, Ind., and came here in 1980 from Lafayette, Ind.
Survivors include a son, Robert, Inyo Kern, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Zwirz, DeLand; three brothers, James Muse, Battleground, Ind., Dale Humm, Otterbein, Calif., and Paul Muse, Lafayette; three sisters, Lucille Watkins, Williamsport, Ind., Lena Bellinfante, Santa Clara, Calif., and Dorothy Rogers, Overland, Ky.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Lauretta Vanthoff
OCT. 31, 1915 -- JULY 26, 2003
ORMOND BEACH -- Lauretta E. Vanthoff, 87, of Park Place, a native of Grand Island, N.Y., died Saturday at home.
Mrs. Vanthoff, a homemaker, moved here in 1986 from Bradenton. She was a member of Convenant United Methodist Church, Port Orange. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and shopping.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Debbie Salimi, and David and Daniel Vanthoff, who provided for her care. Memorial donations may be made to Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Main St., Enterprise, FL 32725. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Howard Harris
DEBARY -- Howard Harris, 81, of Shell Road, a former salesman for Sears-Roebuck in Sanford and DeLand, died Friday at home.
Mr. Harris moved here in 1963 from his native Harlan, Ky. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 544th Amphibious Engineers and received multiple campaign ribbons with bronze stars. He attended the University of Kentucky. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; a son, Howard, Altamonte Springs; a stepson, Randy Perro, Temperanceville, Va.; two stepdaughters, Eva Mensch, Glen Burnie, Md., and Sharon Gerstbrich, Oak Ridge, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 2777 Enterprise Road, Suite 101, Orange City, FL 32763. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Frances Monroe
BUNNELL -- Frances L. Monroe, 64, of North Bacher Street, who was a restaurant waitress, died Friday at home.
Mrs. Monroe was born in Jacksonville but lived in Bunnell all her life.
Survivors include three daughters, Cambeth Cunningham and Lyanne Harper, both of Bunnell, and Regina Powell, Indiana; a brother, Johnny Lynn, Bunnell; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Geraldine Richards
DAYTONA BEACH -- Geraldine Richards, 44, of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a 1976 graduate of Mainland High School, died Saturday at home.
Ms. Richards, a homemaker, came here in 1965 from her birthplace, Jackson, Ga. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. She attended Daytona Beach Community College and enjoyed cooking.
Survivors include three sons, Julian Askew, Jarvis Richards and Jamel Warren, a daughter, Chakera McCloud, and her parents, Mable Frances and Willie Richards, all of Daytona Beach; three brothers, Gregory and Sherman, both of Daytona Beach, and Willie Jr., Miami; five sisters, Dorothy Mitchell, Daytona Beach, Angela Lee and Patricia and Pamela Richards, all of Miami, and Diann Williams, Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Robert Tilton Jr.
DAYTONA BEACH -- Robert C. Tilton Jr., 46, of Wood Ibis Court, a former captain in the merchant marines, died Friday at home.
Mr. Tilton, a Marine Corps veteran, was born in Neptune, N.J. He came here in 1998 from Savannah, Ga., and had worked for several gas and oil companies. He attended Sylvania Technical School and Quinnipiac College. He enjoyed golf and boating.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Bates, South Mills, N.C.; and his parents, Robert and Janet Tilton, and a grandmother, Grace McWhorter, all of Daytona Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the Halifax Humane Society, P.O. Box 9035, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-9035. Baggett & Summers is in charge.

Frieda Williams
DAYTONA BEACH -- Frieda Griffen Williams, 66, of Kathy Street, a 26-year resident, died Saturday at home.
Mrs. Williams, a homemaker, was born in Denver and moved here from Detroit.
Survivors include five sons, Marchal Williams Jr., Daytona Beach, Harley Walker, Orlando, Jesse Walker Jr., Tampa, Terry Sentimile, Clarkson, Ga., and Angelo Sentimile, Detroit; two daughters, Renita Williams and Lynn Robinson, both of Daytona Beach; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Robert Baughman
ORMOND BEACH - Robert E. Baughman, 48, of Oak Lane, a former captain for Beacon Ambulance/EVAC for 20 years, died Tuesday at home.
Mr. Baughman, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, was born in Akron, Ohio, and came here 31 years ago from his birthplace. He also was a member of the medical staff at Daytona International Speedway for 20 years, and was a member of South Akron Church of Christ, Akron. He was an avid NASCAR fan.
Survivors include a son, Bobby, Ormond Beach; two daughters, Lisa Baughman, Ormond Beach, and Tina Baughman, South Daytona; a brother, Jack, Holly Hill; three sisters, Carleen Ripley, Port Orange, and Jane Jarvis and Linda Martin, both of Daytona Beach; two grandchildren; and his fianc, Debbie Farmer, Edgewater. Memorial donations may be made to Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary, 5700 Concord Parkway, Harrisburg, N.C., 28075. Baggett and Summers, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Charles Denton
LAKE HELEN - Charles W. Denton, 75, of Washington Avenue, a retired truck driver for Ecoff Trucking Co., Illinois, , died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Denton, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Lake Village, Ind., and came to this area in 1979 from Tuscola, Ill. He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church, and enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Ola; two sons, Charles, Quincy, Ill., and Kevin Long, DeLand; five daughters, Charlene Santerelli, Cole City, Ill., Vena Moran and Edwina Long, both of Lake Helen, Joyce Talbert, McKenzie, Tenn., and Jean Simpson, Villa Grove, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Davis, Momence, Ill., and Rene Cole, Streamwood, Ill.; and many grandchildren. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

Alfred Fournier
PORT ORANGE - Alfred J. Fournier, 89, of Village Terrace, a retired tool and die maker for General Electric, Somersworth, N.H., died Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.
Mr. Fournier was born in Fall River, Mass., and came here 13 years ago from Somersworth. He was active in the New Hampshire National Guard, Laconia, N.H., and the Choral Society at General Electric. He also was a former member of the Rochester Country Club, and enjoyed singing and golfing.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; two sons, Lee, Haverhill, Mass., and Lew, Portsmouth, N.Y.; a brother Armand, and three sisters, Eve Porter, Bernice Anaire and Irene Hout, all of Laconia; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Bernier Funeral Home, Somersworth, is in charge.

Antonio Guzman
PIERSON - Antonio Guzman, 47, of Shell Harbor Road, a farm worker, died Monday at home.
Mr. Guzman was born in Mexico City and came here in 1983 from his birthplace.
Survivors include his father, Juan, Mexico City; six brothers, Eduardo, Orlando, Alejandro and Javier, both of Los Angeles, and Hector, Oswaldo, and Sergio, all of Sanford; three sisters, Juana Guzman and Cecilia Guzman, both of Mexico City, and Victoria Rodriguez, Los Angeles. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

Rosea Jackson
DAYTONA BEACH - Rosea Mae Jackson, 82, of Glenwood Street, a resident since 1972, died Wednesday at home.
Mrs. Jackson, a homemaker, was born in Donaldsonville, Ga., and came to this area from West Palm Beach. She was a member of the St. Mark Baptist Church, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include four daughters, Annie Daniels, Betty Kendrick, and Totisan Brown, all of West Palm Beach, and Roseanner Robinson, Daytona Beach; a brother, Samuel Kiser, Jacksonville; three sisters, Areatha James, Donaldsonville, Georgia White and Ordea Merriweather, both of Detroit; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-great-grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Iris McGeachie
CONSTABLE, N.Y. - Iris Larrimore McGeachie, 82, a former resident of Daytona Beach, died April 30 in Malone N.Y.
Mrs. McGeachie was born in Hartsville, S.C., and moved to Daytona Beach in 1936 from her birthplace. She was a waitress at the former Princess Issena Hotel, and a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Malone. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and doing volunteer work.
Survivors include two sons, James and Bill, both of Constable; a daughter, Ann Killeen, Pass Christian, Miss.; three sisters, Ellie Larrimore, Holly Hill, and Pauline Fakey and Grace Tucker, both of Daytona Beach; a grandchild and great-grandchild. Alyce Hyde Funeral Home, Malone, is in charge.

James Oddo
PONCE INLET - James A. Oddo, 54, of Jana Drive, owner/operator of Vista Turbo Prop Training Specialists, died Tuesday in Montana, as a result of an airplane crash.
Mr. Oddo, an Army veteran, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to this area 1971 from Manorville, N.Y. During the 1970s, he began the Spruce Creek Fly-In Community. He also was a former ophthamologist in Montana, a flight instructor, vice-president for Phoenix East Aviations and trained some of NASCAR's crews. He enjoyed flying and training, and even helped train Astronaut Edgar T. Mitchell of the Apollo 14 mission.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Jr., and a daughter, Christine Matteo, both of Port Orange; his mother, Rose Oddo, and a brother, Sal Jr., both of Daytona Beach; and six grandchildren. Volusia Memorial, Port Orange is in charge.

Vernon Popp
EDGEWATER - Vernon William Popp, 74, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a retired operator for the water treatment plant in Rochester, N.Y., died Thursday at home.
Mr. Popp came to this area 29 years ago from his native Rochester. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter # 145.
Survivors include his wife, Janet S.; two sons, Dale and Gary Rogers, both of Rochester; a brother, Robert, Edgewater; a sister, Audrey Petote, Rochester; and five grandchildren. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.

Paul Schmidt
DAYTONA BEACH - Paul W. Schmidt, 82, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a retired farmer, died Thursday at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Mr. Schmidt was born in Homestead, Iowa, and came here in 1994 from Brooksville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, Iowa, where he was an Elder and served as an usher. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife Bette; a son, Roger (Bear), Port Orange; and a grandson. Kloster Valentine Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa, is in charge.

Kenneth M. (Ken) VonGonten
Kenneth M. (Ken) VonGonten, of Pinecrest and Beech Mountain, NC, passed away unexpectedly June 3 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 19, 1932 in Colden, NY and was a proud Army Veteran of the Korean War. Ken was a University of Florida graduate and a loyal Gator fan. He was a longtime member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Biscayne Bay Masonic Lodge #124, Scottish Rite, Mahi Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters' Court #88. He was a lifetime member of the South Miami/Coral Gables Elks Lodge #1676 B.P.O.E. and the German American Club. Ken was Past President of the Southwest Miami Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a former member of the Coral Gables Country Club and Past President of the 10th Holers, a former member of Business Incorporated and a member of the Beech Mountain Club. He was the founder and former owner of A Falls Paper Company. He was an avid golfer who thoroughly enjoyed playing many South Florida and North Carolina courses. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Tina; son, Kurt (Joanne Martinez, fiancée); daughter, Kimberly VonGonten Groome (Tom) and loving twin brother, Eugene. Ken lived his life the way he wanted - to the fullest - until the very end. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mahi Shriners Transportation Fund, 1480 NW North River Drive, Miami, 33125 (305) 325-0411. Funeral Services were held on June 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 11295 SW 57 Avenue. Visitation was held June 5 from at: Stanfill Funeral Home 10545 S Dixie (305) 667-2518.
