Joseph Manners
Joseph "Joe" Manners, 84, born Feb. 2, 1924, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, gently passed away on Sunday, May 25. Joe attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt University, La Salle College and graduated cum laude with his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1954. While attending law school, Joe served as the Editor in Chief for the Miami Law Quarterly, The Barrister and The Lawyer. He also was a member of the Iron Arrow Honorary Society, President of Alpha Sigma Upsilon and Vice President of Omicron Delta Kappa. Joe served in the 106th Infantry Division during World War II, European Theatre, was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, and was taken as a prisoner of war. In his long and proud legal career, Joe served as the Assistant Attorney General, Florida; was a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida; Special assistant to the U.S. Attorney General where he headed a special Task Force on Organized Crime; and Special Counsel to Dade County Grand Juries. In his private practice, he served as the General Counsel of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Joe is survived by his beloved wife Sylvia Manners, son Jeffrey Manners, beautiful daughter Jean Anne, grandchildren Joseph Manners, Christina Monteiro, Nicholas Manners, Skyler Manners and great-grandchildren Joseph Manners, Victoria Monteiro and Nathan Manners. Joe is now joyfully reunited with his son, Joseph P. Manners, Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Goldcoast Chapter, American Ex-POW. Robert C. Peacon
Robert C. Peacon, went home to be with the Lord on May 16. He passed away unexpectedly due to heart failure. He is survived by his wife and life long soul mate, Barbara and his children, Melanie Ornowski (Bob), Brian Scott Cowin, Denise Duprey (Don), Daisy, Tynesha and Erick (Kelly). Bob adored his grandchildren, Leah, Kurt, Ali and Kylie. He is also survived by his mother, Helen Popp and brother, Bill (Barbara) and is predeceased by his father, Oscar and brother, Kenneth. He loved his family and the many nieces and nephews he entertained with his humor and wit. A Miami native, Bobby graduated from Coral Gables High School where he was a member of Ching Tang fraternity. He was an outstanding athlete who played varsity sports in high school. He attended St. Leo's College on a basketball scholarship. After college, Bob made aviation his life. He became a pilot with Eastern Airlines at the age of 26. Bobby was still flying when EAL closed their door in 1991. He then started his own business, RP Aviation, Inc., ferrying commercial planes around the world. His personal skills were exceptional and he was sought out for demonstration flights - notably at the Paris Air Show in 1999 and the Air Show in Moscow in 2005. There was a serenity within Bob that portrayed a man who was gentle and kind and enjoyed many things about life. The look on his face, the smile on his lips and the glow in his eyes seemed to tell an eloquent story of a great source of strength in his life. He was God's gentle friend. His family was a constant source of love and strength as well. That openness also went out to others. Bobby never met a stranger - they were only friends he hadn't met yet. He was a true gentleman of impeccable character. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 14401 Old Cutler Road. Carmen Zamora
Carmen Zamora, 90, died May 22 in Stamford, CT. She previously lived over 30 years in Coral Gables. She was predeceased by her husband Rafael R. Zamora. She is survived by her two sons, Rafael P. (Ralph), of Augusta Missouri, and Carlos A. Zamora of Stamford, CT. She is survived by her two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two step-great-grandchildren. Carmen is also survived by her two sisters, Consuelo and Dulce, and her brother, Isidoro Noriega, as well as her many nieces and nephews. She was well loved by her family and all of her friends. She will be greatly missed. A funeral mass was held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 2987 West Flagler St., Miami, on May 31 with burial following at Graceland Cemetery, 4420 S.W. 8 St., Miami.
Mack H. Barnes
Mack H. Barnes, Jr., 89. This great man died of congestive heart failure at his home in Coral Gables, May 23, his wife Virginia by his side. His nickname was "Red" but he was called by many "the last of the great Southern Gentlemen." Always impeccably dressed, Red was a handsome man; deeply religious, so kind, soft-spoken, a bit shy, affectionate, generous to a fault, a great story teller, he loved to sing (albeit off key) and he was a big tease. Born in Savannah, GA, son of Mack and Hilda Einsfeld Barnes, he was preceded in death by his sisters Grace B. Wier and Frances B. Evans, also brother Leonard Barnes. Convinced of the growing importance of formal education in the accounting field, Red was instrumental in getting the GA Accountancy Act amended to include a college degree as a requirement for taking the CPA exam. For many years, most of the CPA certificates issued in GA were signed by Mack H. Barnes, Jr. Red became an active member of the National Assoc. of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) for which he chaired many committees, and was a lifetime member of the Georgia Society of CPAs. He was a partner of Deloitte Touche when he retired in the 70s. Red and Zora Barnes resided at Pine Meadow in Atlanta, GA for many years and there he was a charter member of the Cherokee Club, also a member of the Downtown Atlanta Kiwanis, the Commerce Club, Capital City Club and the Oglethorpe Club in Savannah. The Barnes family which now included a son, Mack III, moved to Conyers, GA in 1968 where they owned and operated Red Holly Farms, one of Georgia's largest Arabian horse farms. In Conyers, Red served on the Rockdale County Hospital Authority, was a member of St. Simon's Episcopal Church and for many years he served on the national board of the Campfire Girls. A vacation home in Highlands, NC at Wildcat Cliffs Country Club was Red's favorite place to play golf and spend his summers although he managed to add world travel to his busy agenda until "911" when he decided home was the place to be. Zora Barnes died in 1993 and in 1997 Red married
Virginia Breece Jones of Miami. The couple moved to Coral Gables and were members of Riviera Country Club, Coral Reef Yacht Club and the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. In addition to wife, Virginia, he is survived by son Rev. Mack H. Barnes, III (Martha), daughter, Carol Morgan (Ron), grandchildren, Jim Barnes, Edith B. Catherine Bates
Catherine (Mildred) Bates, 95 of Coral Gables, formerly of Louisville, Ky. Died Sunday May 18, after losing her battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, in 2002, her only son Kenneth L. Bailey and her stepdaughter Beverly Shockey in 2007. She is survived by 6 beloved grandchildren: Karen Brummel, Eileen Bailey, Janice Goldschmidt, Kathleen Bailey, Michael Shockey and Kevin Shockey , and 7 great-grandchildren. In the year 2002 after the death of her husband, she relocated to Coral Gables, to live with her widowed sister, Agnes Schwartz. Mildred was a member of St. Hugh Catholic Church, The Stars of St. Theresa of the Little Flower, and Becky's Communion Group, and was blessed with many friends. The funeral will be held at St. Hugh Catholic Church, 3460 Royal Road, Coconut Grove, May 29 at 1 p.m. Donations may be given to Catholic Hospice in her memory.
Virginia Davison
Virginia "Ginny" Davison, passed away May 27. Born in Comer, GA, her family moved to Coral Gables in 1934. She graduated from Miami High (in those days, you could go to the school of your choice). At the age of 16, she went to Duke University. After graduation, she joined her parents in their business endeavors. In 1952 she married
prominent attorney and civic leader, Thomas Davison, III. They were active in many religious, civic, and social activities - including the Miami Jaycees, Coral Gables Kiwanis Club, Metro-Dade Library Board, University of Miami Law School Alumni and the Century Club. Additionally, Ginny was involved with her sorority Zeta Tau Alpha (field secretary), University of Miami Women's Club, Miami Panhellenic Association, Gilded Lilies, Coral Gables Garden Club and the P. E. O. sisterhood (Chapter K). Ginny and Tom always thought one of the most enjoyable responsibilities that they shared was serving one year as entertainment Chairmen for Riviera Country Club. Additionally, they both thoroughly enjoyed traveling - usually making two major trips every year. They even flew around the world - before jets! When they were finally blessed with a son, their traveling slowed down temporarily. However, it wasn't long before their son, Thomas IV, joined them in their world travels. Their extended trip to Japan and Africa (especially Kenya and South Africa) were particularly memorable. Tragically, Ginny's husband died at the age of 52 when Tom IV was still in high school. Since then she devoted her life to raising her son as he graduated from Stetson University and the University of Miami School of Law. During the summers, they continued their world travels. Since they traveled on their own, this produced a multitude of unusually memorable experiences. In recent years Ginny has especially enjoyed playing bridge with various friends - her sorority sisters, several University of Miami groups and her many friends at the Riviera Country Club. She is survived by her son, Thomas Davison IV, his wife Kimberly and her beloved grandchildren Jaclyn and Thomas V. Visitation was held on May 28 at Van Orsdel Coral Gables. Nellie T. Diamond
Nellie T. Diamond, was born 06-11-1915 in Yorkville New York and raised in Clark Mills, New York. She moved to Miami in 1935 due to health reasons where she met and married
her late husband, Charles Diamond. During World War II Nellie worked as a technician in support of the war effort. After the war and death of her husband Charles; Nellie worked for the Archdiocese of Miami over twenty years as a Cafeteria Manager at Gesu School in downtown Miami. Upon retirement from the Archdiocese, Nellie was a longtime passionate volunteer at Doctor's Hospital in Coral Gables. She is survived by her three sons, Charles, William and Stephen Diamond, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family held a private service at Van Orsdel Funeral Home Coral Gables, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Joseph Armstrong
DELTONA - Joseph R. Armstrong, 80, a former steelworker for Boston Gear Works, Quincy, Mass., died Friday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial, Orange City.
Mr. Armstrong was born in Canada and came to this area 10 years ago from Brockton, Mass. He was a member of the Quincy Deaf Club.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Georgiana; three sons, Joseph Jr. and Robert, both of Deltona, and Gerard, Stoughton, Mass.; two daughters, Marybeth Ragucci, Reading, Mass., and Georgiana Fitzgerald, Franklin, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Arnold Bauer
DAYTONA BEACH - Arnold Bauer, 70, of Mason Avenue, a former music professor at Palm Beach Atlantic College, West Palm Beach, died Wednesday at Atlantic Medical Center-Ormond, Ormond Beach.
Mr. Bauer, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Pittsburgh and moved to this area five years ago from Lake Worth. He played organ for several churches and enjoyed reading.

Joyce Cade
PIERSON - Joyce Cade, 67, of North Pine Street, a retired schoolteacher at Pierson Elementary School, died Sunday at home.
Mrs. Cade, a native and lifelong resident of Pierson, was a member of United Methodist Women, ESA Sorority, Volusia Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; two sons, Greg, Pierson, and Jeffery, Hastings; a daughter, Melody Hunter, DeLand; her mother, Viola Hallman; and seven grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.
Louise Edwards
DELAND - Louise L. Edwards, 81, of East George Avenue, a dispatcher for Yellow Cab Co., Willimantic, Conn., before her retirement in 1969, died Monday at Memorial Hospital-West Volusia.
Mrs. Edwards was born in Atlanta and came here in 1969 from Willimantic. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed movies.
Survivors include a son, William Davoll, Kentucky; a daughter, Cathy Ward, Connecticut; and three grandchildren. Volusia County Cremation, Daytona Beach, is in charge.
Laura Nelson
DEBARY - Laura Theresa Nelson, 58, of Angeles Road, a personal banker for 25 years for First Union, Deltona, died Saturday at home.
Mrs. Nelson, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., moved to this area in 1970 from Miami. She was sergeant-at-arms for the West Volusia Woman's Bowling Association, a PTA mother for Enterprise School and a cub scout den mother and leader. She enjoyed fishing, roller skating and knitting.

Bessie Spradley
LAKE CITY - Bessie L. Spradley, 73, of Lake City, a former resident of New Smyrna Beach, died Sunday at Alliance Nursing Home, Lake City.
Mrs. Spradley, a homemaker, was born in Ellenton, Ga., and came to this area in 1928, moving away in 1987. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Isaac Stanton III
DELAND - Isaac Anderson "Ike" Stanton III, 82, of Deerfoot Run, an engineer for Pan-American Airlines for 41 years before his retirement, died Monday at home.
Mr. Stanton was born in Social Circle, Ga., and came to this area in 1985 from Miami.

Annetta Wilson
DELAND - Annetta Denease Wilson, 37, of South High Street, a cashier for Publix Supermarket, died Wednesday at Bowman's Health Care Center.
Mrs. Wilson was a native and lifelong resident of DeLand.
Survivors include her father, Ramon Howell, her mother, Jewel Rice, her paternal grandmother, Lois Johnson, and her maternal grandmother, Jeanette Harris, all of DeLand. Charles P. Bailey & Sons is in charge.
Agneta Christensen Heldt
Agneta Christensen Heldt, 1911-2008 Agneta graduated in 1932 with a B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Iowa. She later earned an M.A. in History from Boston University. In 1942 she married
Henning Heldt, the first Florida Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. The couple moved to Miami when Henning became political writer for the Miami Herald. After Henning died in 1950, Agneta went to work as a high school registrar, first at Coral Gables Senior High School and then Killian High School. She was active in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami, which she and Henning had joined in 1943. She co-chaired the Religious Education Department, and for five years served on the Church's Board of Directors. In 1992 she was named to the Clara Barton Sisterhood of the Women's Federation in recognition of long service to Unitarianism. Agneta helped for many years at the Docent Guild of the Lowe Art Museum and the Friends of Art at the University of Miami. In addition, she volunteered in the Friends of Fairchild Tropical Garden and the Horticulture Study Society. She played the recorder and worked on the organization of various workshops of the American Recorder Society. A lifelong liberal, she belonged to the NAACP. Agneta moved to South Bend when she turned 90 and joined the Unitarian Church there. She is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Heldt Zuckert and Lucia Heldt, and by her four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on May 31, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami. William A. Cooper
William A. Cooper, 79, of Coral Gables, passed away June 16. He was born on April 12, 1929 in Miami to Bahamian immigrants Benjamin Leon Cooper, Sr. and Louise Bethel Cooper. He was a graduate of G.W. Carver High School in Miami (Class of 1946) and attended St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, NC. Mr. Cooper retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier in 1989. He was a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove and had served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Vestryman, Men’s Club (past president), Choir member and Stewardship Committee chairperson. He was also active in several organizations, including the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association of Coral Gables (president/founder), Coral Gables Crime Watch Committee (past president), National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees (local past president) and the Letter Carriers Union. Cooper was predeceased by his parents, son Adam, brothers Benjamin Leon Cooper, Jr., Clement T. Cooper and Austin R. Cooper, Sr. and sisters Una Thompson, Marietta Cooper, Laura Westberry and Mary Taylor. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Leona H., daughters Clarice, Wilhemina and Leslie and son William Paul (LaTeesha), sister Leona C. Baker, grandchildren Austin , Leigh, Carlin, Qianna, Toni and Emily, and many other in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Viewing was held on June 18 at Range Funeral Home, 3384 Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove. Funeral service were held on June 19 at Christ Episcopal Church, 3481 Hibiscus Street, Coconut Grove, followed by burial at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th Street, Miami.
