Saunders Welch Jr.
DULUTH, Ga. - Saunders Percy "Sammie" Welch Jr., 40, of Duluth, formerly of Daytona Beach, died Wednesday at Chrisp Medical Center, Cordele, Ga.
Mr. Welch, an Air Force veteran, moved to Georgia 15 years ago from his native Daytona Beach. He was a legal asset recovery manager. He graduated from Father Lopez High School and attended Bethune-Cookman College, both in Daytona Beach, and enjoyed music.
Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Welch, Huntsville, Ala.; and his father, Saunders Welch, Miami. Thompson, Daytona Beach, is in charge.
Gladys Williams
ORMOND BEACH - Gladys D. Williams, 74, of Malayan Sun Bear Path, a former registered nurse, died Friday at home.
Mrs. Williams, a native of Dowling Park, moved to this area in 1998 from Ocala. She graduated in 1946 from Mound Park Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for the Pinellas County Public Health Department for 19 years, where she began the first glaucoma screening program. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Ormond Beach, and a former member of the Childs Park United Methodist Church, where she was president of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She also was a member of the American Nurses Association.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Robert; three daughters, Barbara Riddle, Jacksonville, Beverly Yerby, Seminole, and Betty Smith, Ormond Beach; two brothers, Leslie Dicks, Stigler, Okla., and Reid Dicks Jr., Smyrna, Tenn.; and three sisters, Eloise Hammel and Mattie Long, both of St. Petersburg, and Jonnie Corsignia, Ocala; and six grandchildren. Arthur J. Gallow
Arthur J. Gallow, SR., retired Colonel of United States Army, died on Dec. 9 at his residence in Fort Lauderdale. Colonel Gallow, a native New Yorker, was born on Aug. 26, 1915, graduated from Fordham University, New York City, where he was in the ROTC. He attended the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. His thirty-one year military career included tours of duty in Germany, Vietnam and various stateside assignments. After retiring from the military in 1968, Colonel Gallow initially lived in Miami. He later moved to Ft. Lauderdale and shared time at his home in Blowing Rock, NC. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Ft. Lauderdale and Epiphany Catholic Church in Blowing Rock. He was a trustee for The John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC. His memberships include the Military Order of the World Wars, the Knights of Malta, the Retired Officers Association, the Army Navy Club of Coral Gables, the Blowing Rock Country Club, the Coral Ridge Yacht Club of Fort Lauderdale and the Surf Club in North Miami Beach. He was one of the founders of the Florida Grand Opera and a life member of the Florida Philharmonic. His first wife, Alice T. Gallow, whom he married
in 1944, died in 1978. His second wife, Amy Guest Gallow, whom he married
in 1981, died in 1998. Survivors include his three children, Arthur J. Gallow, Jr. (Diane) of Crofton, MD, Ann Marie Gallow (Steve Gillilan) of Baltimore, MD and Andrew J. Gallow of Miramar, FL; two grandchildren, A.J. Gallow and Tenley Gallow both of Baltimore, MD and a great-grandchild, Gianni Gallow. Charles Aleno
DELAND -- Charles Aleno, 85, of Marion Court, who played baseball for the Cincinnati Red Legs from 1939 to 1943 and in various leagues until the 1950s, died Monday at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center.
Mr. Aleno, who formerly owned Aleno Interiors, was born in St. Louis and moved here in 1937 from Nanuet, N.Y. He was the concessionaire for DeLand ball parks for more than 40 years and was a charter member of Rockland County (N.Y.) Professional Sports Hall of Fame.
Survivors include three sons, Mick and Randy, both of DeLand, and Chuck, Lyman, S.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.
Adolfo Artesona
DELTONA -- Adolfo A. Artesona, 86, of Randolph Street, a resident since 1988, died Monday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.
Mr. Artesona, a retired welder, was born in Jiguani, Cuba. He moved here from the Bronx, N.Y. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing, birdwatching, history and Cuban music.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anna; three sons, Rudolph, Deltona, Alfred, Coral Springs and Gerardo, Union, N.J.; three daughters, Eileen Stripling and Janette Maxwell, both of Deltona, and Ivelisse Bertin, the Bronx; two brothers, Peter, Yonkers, N.Y., and Charles Henry, Port Chester, N.Y.; five sisters, Ursula Delgado, Deltona, Carmen Goytia, Orange City, Rachel Yearwood, New York City, and Helen Martinez and Dominga Fernez, both of the Bronx; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. LAKE HELEN -- David Paul Barker, 49, of West Pennsylvania Avenue, a native of Burlington, Vt., died Tuesday at home.
Mr. Barker, an electrician, moved to this area from Lake County.

EDGEWATER -- Claude Wayne Bassham, 64, of Umbrella Tree Drive, a retired machinist for General Motors, Flint, Mich., died Monday at home.
Mr. Bassham, a Navy veteran, was born in Columbia, Tenn., and moved here in 1986 from Flint. He was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 659, Flint.

ORANGE CITY -- Koreen Travis Alcock Campbell, 87, of Southlake Drive, a 23-year resident, died Thursday at home.
Born in Jeffersontown, Ky., Mrs. Campbell moved to this area from Miami. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeLand.

DELAND -- Mary Elizabeth Desso, 86, of Village Green Road, a resident since 1983, died Monday at home.
Mrs. Desso, a homemaker, was born in Ambridge, Pa., and came here from Pittsburgh. She collected dolls.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Manuel R. Garcia, 88, of Huntington Village Circle, who retired in 1992 from Heller & Usdan in New Jersey after 20 years of service, died Monday at Huntington Village.
Mr. Garcia, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Cuba. He came here in 1996 from Teaneck, N.J. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.

PORT ORANGE -- Ben Hewitt, 88, of Cedar in the Wood, formerly an executive secretary for Bethlehem Steel, where he worked for 39 years, died Monday at Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Hewitt was born in Baltimore and moved to this area in 1987 from Maryland. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Super Singles. He enjoyed reading, ballroom dancing, duplicate bridge, music and writing.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Michael "Frank" O'Boyle, 80, of Cedar Dunes Drive, a retired executive for DDB&N Advertising in Manhattan, N.Y., died Sunday at home.
Born in Crossmolina, Ireland, Mr. O'Boyle came here in 1989 from Kings Park, N.Y., where he was a Democratic Committee member. Here he was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He enjoyed New York professional sports teams.

ORMOND BEACH -- Laura Pelicano, 82, of Seabreeze Drive, who retired as owner of the Oceanic Motel, died Sunday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., Mrs. Pelicano came here in 1966 from Cranford, N.J. A member of the Seabreeze Thursday Quilting and Quilting by the Sea groups, she was a quilting instructor at the Daytona Beach Recreation Center whose work was displayed in a library.
