Hugh Cash
ORMOND BEACH -- Hugh Cash, 79, of Bryant Street, who retired from the Army, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.
Mr. Cash was born in Kentucky, and moved to this area in 1991 from Indiana. He enjoyed traveling, the races and playing bridge.
Survivors include his companion of six years, Elfriede Carter, Ormond Beach; two step grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Flanner & Buchannan Funeral Home, Carmel, Ind., is in charge.

Helen Connally
ORMOND BEACH -- Helen Joyce Connally, 83, of Ann Rustin Drive, a retired Realtor and former mayor of Villa Rica, Ga., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Connally moved here in 1996 from Villa Rica.
Survivors include a son, Sharon III "Bud, " Rossville, Ga.; two daughters, Lynn Dodson and Amy Sweeter, both of Ormond Beach; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Irene FeDora
DELTONA -- Irene Grace "Sally" FeDora, 69, of Captain Drive, a native of Geneva, N.Y., died Wednesday at Mariner Health Care, Orange City.
Mrs. FeDora, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1972 from Vestal, N.Y.
Survivors include three sons, Pilgrim, Orange City, and Mickey and Marty, both of Deltona; a daughter, Suzanne FeDora, Orange City; a brother, Patrick O'Toole, Margate; and a grandson. Deltona Funeral Home, Orange City, is in charge.

LeRoy Garman
HOLLY HILL -- LeRoy L. Garman, 93, of Walker Street, who owned and operated Garman Electronic Sound, Rockford, Ill., died Tuesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.
Mr. Garman, who also worked for RCA in communications at Cape Canaveral, was born in Ogle County, Ill. He moved to this area in 1981 from Cocoa. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ormond Beach, and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed bowling, billiards and stock car racing.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three daughters, Darlene McGrew and Elaine Yates, both of Rockford, and Phyllis Knorr, Rockton, Ill.; a stepson, Thomas Zeller, Hemet, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Teresa Zeller, Hemet, Calif., Patricia Kreamelmeyer, Savannah, Ga., and Janet Dunn, Evanston, Ill.; a sister, Jane Price, Rockford; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Raymond Groat
PORT ORANGE -- Raymond Michael "Snookie" Groat, 68, a resident since 1989, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center.
Mr. Groat, an Army veteran, was born in Albany, N.Y., and moved here from New York. He installed overhead doors. He attended the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles. Mr. Groat enjoyed sports, particularly football and horse racing.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond Jr., Michael and John; three daughters, Donna, Christine and Danette; his father, Raymond Groat; his mother, Pauline Vellano; four brothers, Bobby, Gene and Verne Groat and James Vellano; and a granddaughter. Cardwell & Maloney, Port Orange, is in charge.

Mildred Newkirk
DEBARY -- Mildred Belle Newkirk, 92, of Ramada Drive, a former cook for the Missouri State Mental Hospital, Farmington, Mo., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial, Orange City.
Mrs. Newkirk, also a farmer, was born in Missouri and moved to this area in 1989 from Glenwood, Ark. She was a member of the United Church of God. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and writing songs.
Survivors include three sons, Don Tompkins and Ronald and John Boyd, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Betty Tompkins, DeBary, and Mary Sue Bowes, Deltona; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Altman-Long is in charge.

Bettye Price
ORANGE CITY -- Bettye Jo Price, 47, of South Volusia Avenue, a native of Troy, Tenn., died May 26 in an empty building on Lucie Avenue.
Mrs. Price moved to this area in 1997 from Michigan.
Survivors include a son, David, Enterprise; and a daughter, Brandy Price, DeLand. Memorial donations may be made to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, P.O. Box 6299, Enterprise, FL 32728. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Ernest Sekunna
DELAND -- Ernest Myrick "D.D." Sekunna, 64, of Cassadaga Road, a minister in the spiritual community for 35 years, died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Sekunna, founder of the Universal Center in Cassadaga, was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and moved to Cassadaga in 1987 from Deltona.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Florence; four sons, Matthew, Orange City, Alfred, Deltona, Mark, St. Augustine, and Rick, Orlando; three daughters, Deborah, Kissimmee, Suzanne Alderman, Ocoee, and Tina Barnes, Fayetteville, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 218-A E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32724-5554. Allen-Summerhill, Orange City, is in charge.

Bessie Starke
DELAND -- Bessie Earnestine Starke, 57, of South Adelle Avenue, a retired nurse's aide, died Wednesday at home.
Mrs. Starke, a native and lifelong resident of DeLand, was a member of Greater Union First Baptist Church, DeLand, where she was a deaconess.
Survivors include her husband the Rev. Nehemiah Starke; a son, Nehemiah III, DeLand; two daughters, Michelle Broughton and Lawanda McClendon, and three brothers, Paul Reed, Sanford Cutts, and Melvin Moody, all of DeLand; and 13 grandchildren. Mack is in charge.

John Strasser II
EDGEWATER -- John Richard Strasser II, 59, of Silver Palm Drive, who retired as a lathe operator in Detroit after 30 years of service, died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Strasser, a Navy veteran, was born in Highland Park, Mich., and moved here in 1996 from Michigan. He was a member of Interior System Local 1045 in Michigan. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Linda; two sons, Jeffery and Jeremy, and a daughter, Shannon Strasser, all of Ecorse, Mich.; a brother, Terry, Trenton, Mich.; and a grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. All State Cremation, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Claire Condon
AUG. 19, 1921 -- JULY 24, 2003
ORMOND BEACH -- Claire Lois Condon, 81, of Bristol Lane, a resident since 1968, died Wednesday at home.
Mrs. Condon, a homemaker who also taught ballet, was born in New York City. She moved to this area from Virginia Beach, Va. She was a 35-year member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was a graduate of Hunter College. Mrs. Condon enjoyed swimming and walking on the beach.
Survivors include three sons, Robert, Honolulu, Ronald, Haleiwa, Hawaii, and Rodney, Palm City; a daughter, Barbara Coleman, Ormond Beach; a brother, Donald Lanergan, Allentown, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 201 University Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32118.

Vernard Gardner
MAY 25, 1913 -- JULY 25, 2003
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Vernard J. Gardner, 90, of Turnbull Street, a quality control manager for 44 years with Joy Manufacturing Co., Claremont, N.H., before his retirement, died Friday at home.
A Navy veteran of World War II who served with AirSea Rescue Service of the Naval Air Operations Training Command in New Smyrna Beach, Mr. Gardner was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and move here in 1998 from Claremont. He served on the Goodwin Community Center Commission, Claremont.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Lenore; two sons, Vern Jr., Kittery, Maine, and L. Christopher, Tigard, Ore.; two daughters, Virginia Frawley, Hooksett, N.H., and Sylvia Sivret, Claremont; a sister, Barbara Cox, Tinton Falls, N.J.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Athelyn Hale
AUG. 13, 1916 -- JULY 24, 2003
DELAND -- Athelyn Doris Hale, 86, of Chipola Avenue, a native of New London, N.H., died Thursday at Woodland Terrace.
Mrs. Hale, a homemaker and part-time rural route mail carrier, was a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ, Lake Helen and a 62-year member and officer of the Order of Eastern Star, Elkins, N.H. Mrs. Hale was an officer, member and professional player in the Lake Helen, Orange City and Edgewater Shuffleboard Clubs and covered tournaments, games and other events for local newspapers. She sang with the LH Villa Harmonettes barbershop group, the Colby Junior College Glee Club, and chapel and church choirs.
Survivors include three sons, Robert, Richmond, Va., Alan, Chapin, S.C., and David, Hooksett, N.H.; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Moore, Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Doris Hale, Providence Forge, Va.; a brother, Donald Gay, Fort Myers; a sister, Kathleen Moran, Lake Helen; 18 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Music Ministry, First Congregational Church of Christ, 107 S. Ella Hines
DEC. 2, 1948 -- JULY 25, 2003
DAYTONA BEACH -- Ella Mae Jackson Hines, 54, a resident since 1972, died Friday at Halifax Medical Center.
Mrs. Hines, a former beautician, was born in Otter and moved here from Fort Myers. She was a member of Tabernacle of Praise Church. She attended the Daytona Beach Beauty School. Mrs. Hines enjoyed bingo and fishing.
Survivors include four sons, Freddie Riley, Freddie Scott, Albert Pinkney Jr. and Edward Hines, all of Daytona Beach; two daughters, Charlene Archer, Holly Hill, and Clesha Pinkney, Daytona Beach; her mother, Rebecca Jackson, Daytona Beach; seven brothers, Willie, Joe, Anthony, John, Vernon and Johnas Jackson Jr. and Nathaniel Smith and four sisters, Betty Williams, Rebecca Pierre, Debra Jackson and Gloria Shaheed, all of Daytona Beach; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Helen Lust
SEPT. 20, 1927 -- JULY 23, 2003
DELAND -- Helen Alfreida Lust, 75, a native of Philadelphia, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.
Mrs. Lust, a former retail sales clerk, moved here in 1996 from Great Bend, Kan. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, DeLand.
Survivors include three sisters, Alice Gerwin, Mildred Bukowski and Emma Kasavage, all of Philadelphia. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, West Volusia Unit, 218-A E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32724. Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, Kan., is in charge.

Ferba Nashlund
DEC. 6, 1916 -- JULY 25, 2003
EDGEWATER -- Ferba L. Nashlund, 86, of Juniper Drive, a resident since 1972, died Friday at Bert Fish Medical Center.
Mrs. Nashlund, a homemaker, was born in Irvine, Ky., and moved to this area from Erlanger, Ky. She enjoyed sewing.
Survivors include a daughter, Selma Pietrobono, Edgewater, and three grandchildren. Dudley, Edgewater, is in charge.
