Clarke Hoagland

APRIL 21, 1923 -- APRIL 2, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Clarke L. Hoagland, 80, of Lake Fairgreen Circle, a native of Dearborn, Mich., died Friday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Hoagland, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, moved here in 1987 from Pleasanton, Calif. He formerly worked as a national sales manager with Bell & Howell Intel and as California state distributor with Anderson-Jacobsen Mini Computers. He attended Michigan State University. Mr. Hoagland was a member of Smyrna Yacht Club and was a former member of New Smyrna Beach Municipal Golf Course and Elks Lodge 1557.

Survivors include his wife, Leola; a son, Clarke Jr., Elk Grove, Calif.; four daughters, Susan Hoagland, Pound Ridge, N.Y., Sandy Ingle, Elmhurst, Ill., Ean O'Neill, Sacramento, Calif., and Dale Wolfe, Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister, Lois Powers, New Smyrna Beach; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Debora Hutchinson

JAN. 12, 1959 -- MARCH 30, 2004

WELAKA -- Debora Lynn Hutchinson, 45, of Welaka, a former Ormond Beach resident, died Tuesday at home.

Ms. Hutchinson was born in Gainesville, and moved to Welaka five years ago from Ormond Beach. A registered nurse. she also enjoyed boating, motorcycles, animals, the beach and horseback riding.

Survivors include her fiance, Bill Mannilla; a son, Bryan Day, Ormond Beach; her father, Gilbert Goshorn Jr., Gainesville; a brother, Bruce Goshorn, Orlando; and a sister, Kathy Babcock, Ormond Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County Humane Society, P.O. Box 188, Hollister, FL 32147. Watts Funeral Home, San Mateo, is in charge.

Kaethe John

AUG. 23, 1916 -- APRIL 1, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Kaethe John, 87, of Live Oak Street, a retired maintenance janitor for Flagship banks in Ormond Beach and other Volusia County branches, died Thursday at Ocean View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. John was born in Berlin and moved to this area in 1970 from Plainfield, N.J. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, New Smyrna Beach.

Survivors include a daughter, Heidemarie Spisso, Glenwood, Md.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Dudley, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

William LaJoy

OCT. 3, 1937 -- APRIL 2, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- William F. LaJoy, 66, of Deer Lake Circle, a resident since 1982, died Friday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mr. LaJoy, a retired consultant for aircraft manufacturing, was born in Sea Cliff, N.Y. He moved here from Stratford, Conn. He was a member of Indigo Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara; two daughters, Deborah Merrill, Longwood, and Dawn Williams, New Port Richey; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Daytona Funeral Home, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Flora Monk

FEB. 15, 1914 -- APRIL 2, 2004

DELAND -- Flora H. Monk, 90, of South Brooks Avenue, a cashier for 17 years at the Stetson University Bookstore before her retirement, died Friday at Woodland Terrace.

Mrs. Monk moved to this area in 1949 from her birthplace, Waycross, Ga. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She also served on the church's board and was president of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include two sons, David, DeLand, and R. Franklin, Palm Beach Gardens; three daughters, JoAnne Kinney, Lake Helen, Bonnie Camp, Suwanee, Ga., and Marion Monk, Duluth, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Miriam Optekar

APRIL 16, 1916 -- APRIL 2, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Miriam Optekar, 87, of Columbus, a former 20-year Volusia County resident, died Friday at a nursing home in Columbus.

Born in White Plains, N.Y., Mrs. Optekar moved to Columbus in 1999 from Volusia County. She was a home economics teacher and was a past president of the Bergen County Home Economics Extension Service in New Jersey. She enjoyed dancing, entertaining and making beef stroganoff.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Philip; two sons, David and Michael; three daughters, Susan Bunevich, Tamara Valdez, and Tanya Optekar; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Ohiohealth Breast Cancer Services, co Grant Riverside Foundation, 111 S. Grant Ave., Columbus, OH 43215. Epstein Memorial Chapel, Columbus, is in charge.

Ronald Russell

APRIL 24, 1942 -- MARCH 30, 2004

DELTONA -- Ronald Lee Russell, 61, of Northvale Street, a computer technician for National Cash Register Co., died Tuesday at Central Florida Regional Medical Center, Sanford.

Mr. Russell, an Air Force veteran, was born in Ashland, Ky., and moved here from Key West in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; a son, Brian, Deltona; two brothers, Gary, Catlettsburg, Ky., and Bill, Fairfield, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Adkins, Walker, La., and Becky Hable, Milford, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Leland Simms

FEB. 14, 1927 -- APRIL 1, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Leland William "Pete" Simms, 77, of Hopkins Avenue, a native of Hornell, N.Y., died Thursday at home.

Mr. Simms, a Navy veteran of World War II, moved here in 1988 from Wellsville, N.Y. A retired farmer, he also was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Mr. Simms enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Genevieve; a son, William, Wellsville; two daughters, Kathryn Conte, Ormond Beach, and Linda Stark, Wellsville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Claire Smith

MARCH 5, 1932 -- APRIL 1, 2004

PALM COAST -- Claire Smith, 72, of Becker Lane, a resident since 1994, died Thursday at home.

Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, moved to this area from her native Philadelphia. She was a member and volunteer for the Pennsylvania Club, Women of the Moose, People Who Need People, Red Hat Society and a singles club.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Zwibel, Fort Lauderdale, and Richelle Friedrich, Rydal, Pa.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Marjorie Stewart

MAY 31, 1921 -- APRIL 1, 2004

DELTONA -- Marjorie Dora Stewart, 82, of Worthington Drive, who retired as a cosmetic consultant for Estee Lauder in Ivey's and Burdines department stores in Central Florida, died Thursday at home.

Born in Denver, Mrs. Stewart moved here in 1980 from Orlando. She attended Deltona Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary No. 8093 and Eagles Lodge 4414. She also was a member of Women of the Moose Four Towns Chapter 655, where she was in the College of Regents and received the Red Stole Degree, she also was in its Academy of Friendship and held numerous chairs within the lodge. Mrs. Stewart enjoyed traveling, crafts and gardening.

Survivors include her husband of five years, Hank Parker; three daughters, Linda Novak, Parker, Colo., Donna Cullen, Streamwood, Ill., and Marlene Cooper, Ann Arbor, Mich.; six stepsons, Kirk Stewart, Mims, Larry Parker, Deltona, Jim, Chester and Stephen Parker, all of Lake Wales, and Kent Stewart, West Minster, S.C.; a brother, Clarence Boyle, Cincinnati; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Carole Taylor

OCT. 9, 1952 -- APRIL 1, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Carole Taylor, 52, of Julie Drive, a resident since 2002, died Thursday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mrs. Taylor, who was self employed in the trade show industry, was born in Ypsilanti, Mich., and came to this area from Hoover, Ala.

Survivors include a son, Jonathan Taylor, and her father, Hubert Stallin, both of Ormond Beach. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Gordon Townsend

JUNE 21, 1928 -- APRIL 1, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Gordon H. Townsend, 85, of Crane Point Drive, a supervising engineer for 30 years with Ford Motor Corp. in Walton Hill, Ohio, before his retirement, died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Townsend was born in Wales and moved to this area in 2001 from New Smyrna Beach where he was a resident since 1985. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 2723, Moose Lodge 1263, Ormond Beach, and a past secretary and member of Crane Lakes Men's Golf Association. He enjoyed traveling and dancing.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; a son, Michael, Hudson, Ohio; two daughters, Carol Scott, Parma, Ohio, and Eileen Glista, Diamond, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Jo-Ann Cyr, Bristol, Conn.; a brother, David, and a sister, Joan MacMillan, both of Elliott Lake, Ontario; and eight grandchildren. Virginia Almberg

MARCH 15, 1939 -- MARCH 31, 2004

BUNNELL -- Virginia Almberg, 65, of Moody Boulevard, who co-owned with her husband, Radio Shack in Palm Coast, died Wednesday at home.

Mrs. Almberg moved here in 1984 from her birthplace, Rochester, N.Y. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Palm Coast, Order of Eastern Star and the Palm Coast RV Club.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, John; two sons, Aaron and Brian, and a daughter, Barbara Almberg, all of Palm Coast; a brother, Donald Kingston, Edgewater; a sister, Sandra Kingston, Brockport, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
