Van Houten, who was 57, was a partner at Van Houten & Ponder. He collapsed during his weekly Sunday jog.

"He loved watching his children play sports and never missed a game or match, " said Eileen, his wife of 23 years from their Ormond Beach home on North St. Andrews Circle.

He worked for other local firms before opening his own Daytona Beach office on South Palmetto Avenue. He worked there for almost 10 years before asking Stephen Ponder to go into partnership with him.

"Today would be exactly 11 years to the day that we started working together. Michael Van Houten was the best man I ever met. He was a hardworking, good man, " Ponder said in a phone interview Monday.

A member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Van Houten also was a member of the Iowa, Illinois and Florida bar associations, Father Lopez School Board and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar Association. Van Houten enjoyed running, traveling and golf.
