Fred Holmes

AUG. 8, 1917 -- JUNE 9, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Fred Holmes, 86, of Iowa Street, who retired in 1987 from Dunn Lumber & Supply, died Wednesday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mr. Holmes, an Army veteran, moved here in 1958 from Grand Ridge, his birthplace. He enjoyed wrestling and baseball.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Bertha; four sons, Ted, Daytona Beach, Willie and Samuel, both of New Orleans, and Fred Jr., Boston; five daughters, Cheryl Smith, and Evetta and SaBrenda Holmes, all of Daytona Beach, and Betty Raines and Inez Davis, both of Sneads; 41 grandchildren; and 60 great-grandchildren. Thompson is in charge.

Mary Hubbert

FEB. 11, 1938 -- JUNE 2, 2004

BUNNELL -- Mary Lois Hubbert, 66, of West Elm Avenue, a resident since 1961, died June 2 at South Fulton Regional Medical Center, East Point, Ga.

Mrs. Hubbert, a homemaker, moved here from her native Cogdell, Ga. She was a former member of St. James Baptist Church and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Homerville, Ga.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Dunston and Alvin Hubbert Jr., both of Atlanta, and Saul Hubbert, New York City; a daughter, Rhonda Hubbert, Bunnell; a stepson, Alvin Hubbert, Palatka; two stepdaughters, Wendy Ford, Palm Coast, and Alberta Hubbert, Palatka; a brother, Ranson Dunston, Willingboro, N.J.; two sisters, Elizabeth Johnson, Bunnell, and Hattie Williams, Atlanta; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Karl N. Flagg Serenity Memorial Chapel, Palatka, is in charge.

Ralph Huskey

JAN. 13, 1928 -- JUNE 9, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Ralph Hubert Huskey, 76, of North Causeway, a former owner and operator of a mechanical contracting company, died Wednesday at Bert Fish Medical Center.

Mr. Huskey, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Gaffney, S.C., and moved here in 1992 from Newport News, Va. He was a member of Benn's United Methodist Church, Smithfield, Va., and attended Coronado Community United Methodist Church. He also was a member of James River Rod & Gun Club, Charles City, Va., and the Masonic and Moose lodges of Newport News. An avid Atlanta Braves fan, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Anne; two sons, Jody, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Rodney, Yorktown, Va.; four daughters, Penny Huskey, Poquoson, Va., and Chris Clarke, Read Williams and Curtis Higgins, all of Newport News; two brothers, Cleo, Gloucester, Va., and William, Newport News; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or to Coronado Community United Methodist Church, 201 S. Marie Hyde

MARCH 14, 1920 -- JUNE 6, 2004

DELAND -- Marie Hyde, 84, of Chipola Avenue, a factory worker at General Electric in Daytona Beach before her retirement in 1983, died Sunday at Woodland Terrace.

Born in Ilion, N.Y., Mrs. Hyde moved here in 1974 from Mohawk, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Richard, Little Falls, N.Y.; three daughters, Dianne Markwardt, Mohawk, Cynthia Bruce, Denver, N.C., and Suzanne Lockhart, Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Lealand Land

SEPT. 22, 1919 -- JUNE 9, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Lealand J. Land, 84, of Roslyn Avenue, a retired policeman in Washington, D.C., died Wednesday at Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans Nursing Home, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Land, a Marine veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was born in Oriental, N.C., and moved here in 1954 from Washington, D.C. He was a member of New Smyrna Beach Seventh Day Adventist Church and a 57-year member of Masonic Lodge 270, Daytona Beach. Mr. Land enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Wilma; five sons, Ron Helgemo, Ormond Beach, Thomas Janeczko, Daytona Beach, David and John Janeczko, both of California, and James Janeczko, Georgia; two daughters, Terry Janeczko, Maryland, and Mary Barber, Jacksonville; a stepson, Greg Wooten, Maitland; a stepdaughter, Linda Reichard, Harrisonburg, Va.; a brother, Frank, Ohio; a sister, Imogene Dunbar, New Bern, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Florida, P.O. Box 549, Daytona Beach, FL 32115. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Donna Levittan

NOV. 3, 1937 -- JUNE 10, 2004

DELEON SPRINGS -- Donna Levittan, 66, a legal secretary, died Thursday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Levittan was born in East Orange, N.J., and moved here six months ago from Hyannis, Mass. She enjoyed arts and crafts and dancing.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Johnson, and a son-in-law, Michael Johnson-Jonzun, DeLeon Springs, both of whom provided for her care; her mother, Wahnatusa Oston, DeLeon Springs; a sister, Suzanne Oston-Brooks, East Falmouth, Mass.; and three grandchildren. Mack is in charge.

Anne Link

FEB. 7, 1910 -- JUNE 8, 2004

DELAND -- Anne K. Link, 94, of East Beresford Avenue, a retired chemist, died Tuesday at home.

Mrs. Link was born in Germany, and moved to this area in 1971 from New York. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Mrs. Link was a graduate of New York University.

Survivors include, Margie and John Mott, DeLand, who provided for her care. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Clarence Pierce

JAN. 10, 1920 -- JUNE 9, 2004

DELAND -- Clarence F. Pierce, 84, of South Hill Avenue, the owneroperator of a tire company, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Pierce, an Army and Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Willoughby, Ohio, and moved to this area in 1997 from Delray Beach. He was a 1938 graduate of DeLand High School. Mr. Pierce was a 32nd degree Mason in Delray Beach.

Survivors include a daughter, Patrice Shramko, Boynton Beach; a brother, Lawrence, Delray Beach; a sister, Ruth Brazell, Lubbock, Texas; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 12502 Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Thelma Shimano

APRIL 25, 1930 -- JUNE 9, 2004

DELTONA -- Thelma Ada Shimano, 74, of Lydia Drive, a retired bookkeeper, died Wednesday at Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Shimano was born in Woodbury, N.J., and moved to this area in 1993 from Levittown, Pa. She was a member of Deltona Christian Church and its Disciples of Christ, and was a past president of the Parent Teachers Association and Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania. She enjoyed reading, cards and playing mah-jongg.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Louis; a daughter, Toni-Ann Rich, Deltona; a brother, Stephen Stillwell, Mount Holly, N.J.; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, West Volusia Unit, 218-A E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32724; or to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. National Cremation Society, South Daytona, is in charge.

Jack Tolson

FEB. 23, 1926 -- JUNE 8, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Jack D. Tolson, 78, of Evergreen Street, a retired realtor, died Tuesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Born in Clinton, Iowa, Mr. Tolson, an Air Force veteran of World War II, who marched in the Franklin D. Roosevelt funeral procession, moved here in 2000 from Longwood. He formerly owned a printing company in Clinton. He was a member of Wekiva Presbyterian Church, Longwood, and was a past member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. He also was a member of the Masonic Order.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; two sons, David, Chicago, and Robert, Guilford, Conn.; two daughters, Jill, New York City, and Sue Bowers, Walker, La.; two stepsons, James Schnaiter, Princeton, Ill., and Jeffrey Schnaiter, Amboy, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Scott, Princeton, Minn.; a brother, James, Fort Myers; a sister, Joyce Munson, Lansing, Mich.; and 13 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Bonnie Tucker

OCT. 30, 1942 -- JUNE 9, 2004

DELAND -- Bonnie Sue Tucker, 61, of Euclid Avenue, a native of Miami, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Tucker, a homemaker, was a resident of the area since her childhood. She enjoyed arts and crafts, drawing, and dogs.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth, DeBary, and Robert, DeLand; two daughters, Deborah Daudelin and Kellie Tucker, both of DeLand; a brother, Marty Weeks, Port Orange; a sister, Carol Sheppard, DeLand; and eight grandchildren. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Henry Berman III

JULY 8, 1947 -- JUNE 8, 2004

DELEON SPRINGS -- Henry "Buddy" Berman III, 56, of Valley Drive, who retired from the Navy, died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Berman, a veteran of the Vietnam War, who was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Navy Commendation Medal, was born in Washington, D.C. He moved here in 2002 from Fruitland.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Paula; his father, Henry Berman Jr., North Fort Myers; and his mother, Harriett Saxer, Odenville, Ala. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Robert Allen
JULY 12, 1928 -- SEPT. 17, 2004

DELAND -- Robert Edward Allen, 76, of Violetwood Road, a retired maintenance employee with the Volusia County Agricultural Center, died Friday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

A native and lifelong DeLand resident, Mr. Allen was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and also served 20 years in the Coast Guard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and 50-year member of St. John's Masonic Lodge. Mr. Allen served on the board of directors for the Volusia County Fair. A master gardener, he also enjoyed volunteer work at the city tree farm garden.

Survivors include a son, David Hartley, Sanford; and a sister, Katherine Hahl, Deltona. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 115 E. Howry Ave., DeLand, FL 32724. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.
