William Taylor

MARCH 24, 1920 -- MARCH 26, 2005

FLAGLER BEACH -- William Taylor, 85, of 27th Street, who retired as senior project engineer with the Bendix Corp., died Saturday at the Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Taylor, an officer with the Merchant Marines during World War II, was born in Charleston, S.C. He moved to this area in 1983 from Franklin Lakes, N.J. He attended the Academy of New London, Connecticut.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; a son, William, Wood Ridge, N.J.; two daughters, Robin Taylor, Flagler Beach, and Linda Henrich, Melbourne; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Eleanor Tooker

MARCH 4, 1931 -- MARCH 27, 2005

DELAND -- Eleanor Joan Tooker, 74, of North Amelia Avenue, who worked in sales for more than 15 years at the Orange City Wal-Mart, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in DeLand.

Mrs. Tooker moved to Central Florida in 1979 from her birthplace, Long Branch, N.J. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Jr., a daughter, Kathryn Tooker, and two brothers, John and Anthony Celli, all of Deltona; a sister, Shirley Pesano, DeBary; and four grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32119. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Jeanne West

JULY 28, 1930 -- MARCH 27, 2005

DELTONA -- Jeanne M. West, 74, of Melshire Avenue, who moved here in 1992 from Feeding Hills, Mass., died Sunday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City.

Mrs. West, a homemaker, was born in Springfield, Mass. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and enjoyed sewing and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Sherman, Deltona, Elaine Markham, Winter Park, and Marilyn Harkins, Enfield, Conn.; a brother, Roland Caplette, Chicopee, Mass.; a sister, Claire McConnell, La Crescenta, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Karen Whittaker

MAY 28, 1953 -- MARCH 26, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Karen Elaine Whittaker, 51, of North Beach Street, a bookkeeper at Daytona Brick and Stone, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mrs. Whittaker moved here in 1993 from Bristol, Conn., her birthplace. She was a member of the Ormond Beach Moose Lodge and enjoyed motorcycles.

Survivors include her husband of six years, Russell; and a brother, Wilbur, Bristol. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Joan Witherwax

AUG. 31, 1930 -- MARCH 27, 2005

EDGEWATER -- Joan L. Witherwax, 74, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a resident since 1980, died Sunday at Bert Fish Medical Center, New Smyrna Beach.

Ms. Witherwax, a former secretary, was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and moved here from Martha's Vineyard, Mass. She was a member of Crosswalk Church, Edgewater, and attended church services at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Smyrna Beach. Mrs. Witherwax enjoyed needlepoint, crochet and baking.

Survivors include a son, David Cushman, Chesapeake, Va.; four daughters, Tracy Harmon, Stuart, Sandra Cushman and Beth Erickson, both of Martha's Vineyard, and Rebecca Vincello, Towanda, Kan.; a brother, Arden Witherwax, Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; a sister, Shirley VanDerbogart, Poughkeepsie; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, co Resident Council, 2810 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Winton Dalton

JUNE 2, 1929 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Winton C. Dalton, 75, of Iron Horse Road, who served 23 years in the Army before retiring as a staff sergeant, died Monday at Halifax Medical Center.

A native of Meadows of Dan, Va., Mr. Dalton, a Korean War veteran, moved here from Virginia in the 1960s. He was a member of First Baptist Church of DeLeon Springs.

Survivors include a son, Dennis, Daytona Beach; three daughters, Peggy Clark, DeLeon Springs, Brenda Thornburg, Astor, and Charlotte Gosslen, Osteen; a sister, Loel Draper, Wentworth, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Hannah Cremation, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Beulah Jacobs

JAN. 31, 1929 -- JUNE 8, 2004

DELAND -- Beulah P. Jacobs, 75, of Stonington Way, a retired bookkeeper, died Tuesday at Oakwood Garden of DeLand.

A native of New York City, Mrs. Jacobs moved here in 2003 from LaGrange, N.Y.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Rodman; a son, Lee, Hockessin, Del.; two daughters, Ellen Purchell, the Bronx, N.Y., and Sue Schwartz, Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Tri-County Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Henry Jankowski

NOV. 13, 1919 -- JUNE 9, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Henry Thomas Jankowski, 84, of Frederick Avenue, a corrections officer for the Erie County Correctional Facility, Alden, N.Y., died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Jankowski moved to this area in 1979 from his native Buffalo, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; five sons, H. Thomas, Dennis and Jeffrey, all of Port Orange, John, Alden, and David, Hampstead, Md.; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Hannah Cremation, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Margaret Kish

APRIL 21, 1916 -- JUNE 8, 2004

SILVER SPRINGS -- Margaret Kish, 88, of Silver Springs, a former longtime Orange City resident, died Tuesday at Palm Park East, Ocala.

Mrs. Kish, a homemaker, was born in Cleveland, and moved to Silver Springs from Orange City in February. The first female street car driver in Cleveland, she was given the nickname "Trolley Gal."

Survivors include a son, Robert Bondy, Silver Springs. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Kenneth Landrum

JAN. 16, 1921 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Kenneth Charles Landrum, 83, of Palm Drive, a mechanic for Sunrise Olds before his retirement, died Monday at home.

Mr. Landrum, a Navy Reserve veteran, moved here in 1954 from his birthplace, Covington, Ky. He was a member of Daytona Beach Christian Church. He was a musician.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmie, Bunnell, and Larry, Glenwood; a brother, Gordon, Covington; two sisters, Ilene Murray, Ohio, and Marjorie Landrum, Covington; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Pinello is in charge.

Eleanor Mack

FEB. 12, 1903 -- JUNE 7, 2004

DELAND -- Eleanor V. Mack, 101, of Villa Villar Court, a former master grapho analyst, died Monday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Mack was born in Methuen, Mass., and moved to this area in 1973 from Charleston, S.C. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church of DeLand, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Charleston.

Survivors include a daughter, Grace Sayers, DeLand; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Louis Rego

JULY 31, 1927 -- JUNE 9, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Louis D. Rego, 76, of Greenwood Avenue, who owned and operated G&L Plumbing before his retirement in 1982, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Mr. Rego, an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, who was awarded the Bronze Star, moved here in 1969 from his native Johnston, R.I. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Elks Lodge No. 2193, and Eagles Lodge No. 3800. He enjoyed volunteer work.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Rose; a son, Louis Jr., Orlando; a daughter, Anna Hartling, Ormond Beach; a sister, Theresa Ferrante, North Providence, R.I.; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge No. 2193 Scholarship Fund, 285 Wilmette Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Volusia Memorial, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Avis Sweeney

MAY 11, 1918 -- JUNE 9, 2004

DELAND -- Avis D. Sweeney, 86, of North Woodland Boulevard, who worked in the Volusia County Schools Finance Department before her retirement, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Sweeney, who previously lived in Volusia County, was born in Bethel, Vt., and moved here in 1998 from Winter Haven. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting and playing bridge.

Survivors include a son, Bruce, Springfield, Tenn.; a daughter, Shelley Johnson, DeLeon Springs; a brother, Charles Dwyer, and a sister, Edith Momaney, both of Brattleboro, Vt.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.
