Albert Atwood

JULY 8, 1919 -- JUNE 11, 2004

DELTONA -- Albert E. Atwood, 84, of Elkcam Boulevard, a retired owner of a real estate business that owned and rented rooming houses in Massachusetts, died Friday at home.

Mr. Atwood, who served in the Merchant Marine, was born in Eliot, Maine, and moved to this area in 1988 from Wilmington, Mass. He also worked for Ronson Lighter Co. for 18 years and owned a tavern, both in Massachusetts. Mr. Atwood enjoyed carpentry, boating, water skiing, travel and country music.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nina; two sons, Albert and Bobby, both of Deltona; a daughter, Donna Hoeft, Weston; and a grandchild. FourTowns Cremation, Orange City, is in charge.

George Buchhalter

SEPT. 1, 1898 - JUNE 12, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- George J. Buchhalter, 105, a machinist for Westinghouse Corp. in Philadelphia before his retirement, died Saturday at Olds Hall-Good Samaritan Center.

Mr. Buchhalter was born in Danville, Pa., and moved here in 1995 from Media, Pa. He was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Port Orange. He enjoyed working out and keeping physically fit.

Survivors include a niece, Louise Gearhart, Daytona Beach, who provided for his care. Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Lutheran Church, 751 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange, FL 32127; or Olds Hall-Good Samaritan Center, 325 S. Segrave St., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Cardwell & Maloney, Port Orange, is in charge.

Gino Cantele

MAY 24, 1933 -- JUNE 2, 2004

HERNANDO BEACH -- Gino Luke Cantele, 71, of Hernando Beach, the father of DeBary resident Sandra Chestnutt, died June 2 at home.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Cantele was a retired businessman in the aviation field. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association. Mr. Cantele enjoyed golf, flying, boating, flying model airplanes and was an All American football player at Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, Ill.

Additional survivors include his wife, Audrey; three daughters, Ann Converse, Maitland, Susan Beltran, Howey in the Hills, and Cathy Siano, Dublin, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Homecare, 13027 Cortez Blvd., Brookville, FL 34613. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Brenda Gray MARCH 6, 1959 -- JUNE 10, 2004

DELAND -- Brenda Gray, 45, of West Hogle Avenue, a native of Hartford, Conn., died Thursday at home.

Mrs. Gray, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1987 from Ledyard, Conn. She was an avid New England Patriots fan.

Survivors include a son, Christopher Ajemian, Deltona; a daughter, Samantha Ajemian, DeLand; her mother, Mildred Doolan, Hebron, Conn.; a brother, Thomas Doolan, Amston, Conn.; a sister, Cheryl Harduby, Sebastian; and her grandmother, Cora Hannington, Morrill, Maine. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Clifford Hallam

NOV. 30, 1918 -- JUNE 8, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Clifford Hallam, 85, of Golden Gate Circle, a mechanical engineer for Whirlpool for 30 years before retiring, died Tuesday at home.

Mr. Hallam was born in Crossville, Ill., and moved here in 1981 from Green Cove Springs. A semi-professional golfer in the 1950s, he was a member of Green Cove Springs Country Club. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a son, Charles "Joe, " Martinsville, Ind., and six grandchildren. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Daniel Haney

JUNE 26, 1958 -- JUNE 7, 2004

FLAGLER BEACH -- Daniel Vincent Haney, 45, of North Oceanside Drive, a welder, died Monday at Florida Hospital-Flagler, Palm Coast.

Mr. Haney was born in Wayne County, Mich., and moved here in 2000 from Blountsville, Ala.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Waggoner, Sterling Heights, Mich. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Johanna Hemminger

JULY 26, 1913 -- JUNE 12, 2004

DELAND -- Johanna C. Hemminger, 90, of Chipola Avenue, a native of New York City, died Saturday at Woodland Terrace Extended Care.

Mrs. Hemminger, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1977 from Altamonte Springs. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, South Congregation, and a former member of the Home Bureau, an arts and crafts organization in Patchogue, N.Y., and New Fane, Vt. She won many prizes for her arts and crafts.

Survivors include a son, Charles, Ocala; a daughter, Susan Gunderman, Lake Helen; a brother, Joseph Lindenmayer, Pearce, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, South Congregation, 713 W. Cincinnati Ave., DeLand, FL 32720. Carpenter-Curry is in charge.

William Johnson

SEPT. 4, 1918 -- JUNE 12, 2004

DEBARY -- William J. Johnson, 85, of Volusia Drive, an expeditor for American Cyamid before his retirement, died Saturday at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford.

Mr. Johnson, an Army veteran of World War II who participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, moved to this area in 1991 from his native Staten Island, N.Y. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Enterprise, and the Pelican Athletic Club and American Legion in New York. Mr. Johnson enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Pauline; three daughters, Anne Lyon, DeBary, Margaret DeRosa, Staten Island, and Katherine Benjamin, Aberdeen, N.J.; three brothers, Floyd, Spotswood, N.J., Robert, Staten Island, and Arthur, Cairo, N.Y.; two sisters, Gertrude Stern, and Carol Pavin, both of Staten Island; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Altman-Long is in charge.

Robert Marcatos

DEC. 29, 1960 -- JUNE 12, 2004

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Robert Allen Marcatos, 43, of Greenville, a native of Daytona Beach, died Saturday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on I-95 near the Flagler-St. John counties line.

Mr. Marcatos, a master craftsman with Goodyear Tire Co. for 10 years, moved to Greenville in 1990. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and graduated from Mainland High School.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby Wilson, Greenville, and Robert Roberts, Aynor, S.C.; a daughter, Melissa Antoncci, Palm Coast; his parents, Robert and Juanita Marcatos, Daytona Beach, a sister, Kathi Phillips, Ormond Beach; and two grandchildren. Donna Messner

NOV. 8, 1939 -- JUNE 12, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Donna D. Messner, 64, of Smokerise Boulevard, a resident since 1980, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center.

Mrs. Messner, a homemaker, was born in Bradford, Pa., and moved here from New Windsor, N.Y. She was a member of Port Orange Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Terry; a son, Robert, Port Orange; a daughter, Wendy Gonzalez-Rio, Miami; a brother, Dean Nolf, Lake Orion, Mich.; a sister, Cynthia Camp, Fort Myers; and two grandchildren. Felix Simanowski

AUG. 21, 1913 -- JUNE 12, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Felix Edward Simanowski, 90, of Sabal Palm Drive, an engineer with the New York Central Railroad before his retirement, died Saturday at Bert Fish Medical Center, New Smyrna Beach.

Mr. Simanowski moved to this area in 1978 from his native Syracuse, N.Y. He was a member of St. Gerard's Catholic Mission, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Men's Club, New Smyrna Beach, and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Courtwright, Chittenango, N.Y.; a sister, Rose Szkolnik, Syracuse; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Baldwin Brothers, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

May Sowinski

FEB. 4, 1911 -- JUNE 12, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- May L. Sowinski, 93, of Mount Vernon Drive, a retired retail sales clerk, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Sowinski, who also was a homemaker, was born in Kane, Pa., and moved here in 1979 from DuBois, Pa. She was a member of the DuBois Country Club and the American Legion and Knights of Columbus auxiliaries.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Theodore, and a daughter, Sue Ann Sowinski, Ambler, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 111 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Baldwin Brothers, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Vasil Tydir

SEPT. 8, 1921 -- JUNE 11, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Vasil Tydir, 82, of Fisherman's Circle, a retired butcher and restaurant owner, died Friday at Kindred Hospital, Green Cove Springs.

Born in Sherbovec, Ukraine, Mr. Tydir moved here in 1978 from Toronto. He was founder of the Ukrainian American Society of Daytona Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Alice; two sons, Peter and Paul, both of Ormond Beach; a brother and a sister; and five grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Ukrainian American Society of Daytona Beach, 1328 Hurst St., Holly Hill, FL 32117. Haigh-Black is in charge.

Joseph Williams

MAY 5, 1938 -- JUNE 11, 2004

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Joseph H. Williams, 66, of Poughkeepsie, a native of Glenwood, died Friday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Williams was a maintenance supervisor for ABM Co. He enjoyed mechanics and listening to music.

Survivors include his stepmother, Rosie Williams, DeLand; three brothers, Francis Williams, Daytona Beach, and Eddie and Tommie Williams, both of DeLand; and four sisters, Etta Casminski, Rosemary Lewis and Sharon Williams, all of DeLand, and Joann Bryant, West Palm Beach. Mack, DeLand, is in charge.
