Gerald Lane

JAN. 31, 1921 -- JUNE 17, 2004

DELAND -- Gerald Lane, 83, of North McDonald Avenue, a printer who retired from Court Square Press in Boston, died Thursday at Florida Lutheran Retirement Center.

Mr. Lane, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Nova Scotia, and came here in 1983 from North Scituate, Mass. An Adopt-A-Street volunteer, he was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, DeLand, and West Volusia Stamp Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel; three sons, Stephen and Richard, both of Canton, Mass., and Douglas, Plymouth, Mass.; two daughters, Cynthia Beglane, Stoughton, Mass., and Vera Kearns, Norwood, Mass.; three step-daughters, Helen Martin, DeLand, Anita Vrionides, Orlando, and Emily Snyder, Hendersonville, Tenn.; two brothers, Gordon, Satsuma, and Errol, Canton; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Charles Lindstrom

SEPT. 19, 1920 - JUNE 15, 2004

PALM COAST -- Charles Joseph Lindstrom, 83, of Westford Lane, a resident since 1985, died Tuesday at Florida Hospital-Flagler.

Born in Winchester, N.H., Mr. Lindstrom, an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, came here from Fairview Park, Ohio. He worked as an engineer for Iron and Coal Works. He was a member of Pine Lakes Golf Club, and the Ex-Prisoner-Of-Wars clubs in Palm Coast and Daytona Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Dorothy; two daughters, Christine Lindstrom, Berwin, Pa., and Janice Brose, Rockville, Md.; a brother, Paul, Bonita Springs; a sister, Marion Hutchison, Stratford, Conn.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Coastal Cremation, Palm Coast, is in charge.

Carolyn Mantor

AUG. 31, 1919 -- JUNE 17, 2004

DELAND -- Carolyn L. Mantor, 84, of East Howry Avenue, a retired bank auditor, died Thursday at The Cloisters.

Mrs. Mantor, a native of Cincinnati, came here from Coral Springs in 2002. She was a member of Stetson Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Frank; a son, Thomas, Middleburg; a daughter, Linda James, Coral Springs; a brother, Willis Neff, Powell, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Mary Jayne Myles

JULY 11, 1917 -- JUNE 6, 2004

PALM COAST -- Mary Jayne Woodworth "Susie" Myles, 86, of St. Johns Avenue, a school secretary before her retirement in 1973, died June 6 at home.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Myles moved to this area in 1991 from Long Island, N.Y. She was a member and historian with the Old Kings Highway Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the America Revolution. Mrs. Myles enjoyed going on casino cruises and playing cards and slot machines.

Survivors include a son, Chuck, Sloansville, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Jayne Murphy, Palm Coast; a sister, Dorothy Abbott, Peoria, Ariz.; and two granddaughters. Memorial donations may be made to Flagler Humane Society, 1 Shelter Drive, Palm Coast, FL 32135-5103; or to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head, N.Y., is in charge.

Whitford Nycum

APRIL 14, 1917 -- JUNE 16, 2004

DELAND -- Whitford E. Nycum, 87, of Sunshine Boulevard, a miner who retired from the U.S. Steel Co., Uniontown, Pa., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Nycum was born in Grays Landing, Pa., and came here from Uniontown in 1993. He was a member of First Assembly of God. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Nycum also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and lifetime member of AmVets, all of Pennsylvania.

Survivors include his wife Mildred; three sons, Kenneth, DeLand, and George and William, both of Minneapolis; two daughters, Sandra Stewart, DeLand, and Shirley Storch, Logan, Ohio; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Carmen Perez

NOV. 2, 1928 -- JUNE 15, 2004

DEBARY -- Carmen P. Perez, 75, of Bougainvillea Drive, a restaurant waitress, died Tuesday at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford.

Mrs. Perez was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and came here to this area in 1968. She enjoyed music and cooking.

Survivors include a son, Ramon Jr., Orlando; two daughters, Yvonne D'Auria, Deltona, and Virginia Perez, Orlando; a brother, Guellarmo Rosado, and a sister, Delia Rosado, both of New York City; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Ann Piazza

OCT. 9, 1926 -- JUNE 16, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Ann L. Piazza, 77, of Farmbrook Road, a native of Manhattan, N.Y., died Wednesday at Horizon Healthcare, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Piazza, a homemaker, moved here in 1994 from Staten Island, N.Y. She enjoyed cooking, football and making floral arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Frances Pegues, Port Orange. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Stephen Raksnis

NOV. 2, 1912 -- JUNE 17, 2004

PALM COAST -- Stephen G. Raksnis, 91, of Cottonwood Trail, a draftsman for FMC Corp., Marcus Hook, Pa., before his retirement in 1976, died Thursday at home.

A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Raksnis moved here in 1978 from Aldan, Pa. He also worked as a draftsman for Baldwin Locomotive Works in Chester, Pa. Mr. Raksnis was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles and enjoyed the dog track.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita Rohr, Palm Coast; three sisters, Josephine Minot, Miami, Emily Yocum, Pinellas Park, and Lucille Smith, Baton Rouge, La.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or to Flagler Humane Society, 1 Shelter Drive, Palm Coast, FL 32135-5103. Olof Swenson

OCT. 30, 1925 -- JUNE 16, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Olof J. "Smiley" Swenson, 78, of Mariposa Avenue, a retired golf course maintenance mechanic, died Wednesday at home.

A native of Wisconsin, Mr. Swenson came to this area in 2000 from Madison, Wis., where he was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Dorothy; a son, Eugene, Port Orange; a sister, Lillian Edgerly, Richland Center, Wis.; six step-children; 16 step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Matthew Troy

JUNE 14, 2004 -- JUNE 14, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Matthew Paul Troy, the infant son of New Smyrna Beach residents, Matthew and Jennifer Troy, was stillborn Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Additional survivors include his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Katherine Troy, Edgewater, and his maternal grandparents, Paul and Mary Bickelman, Staten Island, N.Y. Volusia Memorial, Port Orange, is in charge.

Shawn Veira

OCT. 12, 1979 -- JUNE 16, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Shawn E. Veira, 24, of Fifth Street, a native of DeLand and lifelong resident of West Volusia, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Veira was a member of Volusia County Baptist Church. He collected Coke memorabilia and any type of gold items. He enjoyed riding dirt bikes.

Survivors include his father, John, Crystal River; his mother, Donna Mullins, Orange City; two brothers, Paul, Orange City, and Johnny, Crystal River; two sisters, Tracy Veira, Orange City, and Kristi Veira, Crystal River; and his maternal grandparents, Harold and Juanita Mullins, Orange City. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Wanda Walsh-Atkinson

JAN. 28, 1928 -- JUNE 17, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Wanda W. Walsh-Atkinson, 76, of Rio Pinar Trail, a Central Florida resident since 1968, died Thursday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Walsh-Atkinson, a homemaker, was born in Hempstead, N.Y. She was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church and a Red Cross volunteer.

Survivors include two sons, David Walsh, DeBary, and Patrick Walsh, Casselberry; a daughter, Kelly Walsh-Klicker, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; a sister, Betty Woodworth, Santa Maria, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Floyd Williams

APRIL 5, 1919 -- JUNE 16, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Floyd B. Williams, 85, of Gardenia Drive, a former truck driver for Panning Lumber Co., died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.

Mr. Williams, an Army veteran of World War II, who received the American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Overseas Service Bar with Service Stripe, was born in Waterloo, Iowa. He moved to this area in 1981 from Dennard, Ark. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, both of Orange City. Mr. Williams enjoyed camping and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn; three sons, Donald Stevens and Floyd and Curtis Williams, and a daughter, Dorreen Griffen; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

John Zabolusky

MAY 14, 1919 -- JUNE 15, 2004

UMATILLA -- John Anthony Zabolusky, 85, of Umatilla, an Ormond Beach resident for 28 years, died Tuesday at home.

Mr. Zabolusky, a retired plumber, was born in Broad Brook, Conn., and came to Ormond Beach in 1972. He moved to Umatilla in 2000.

Survivors include a son, Gary, Seattle; three daughters, Carol Hill, Ormond Beach, and Susan and Karen Zabolusky, both of Umatilla; a brother, Stanley Zabolusky, St. Petersburg; and six grandchildren. Central Florida Cremation, Tavares, is in charge.
