Raymond Hester

OCT. 24, 1911 -- JUNE 26, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Raymond H. Hester, 92, of Fairgreen Avenue, a general contractor and real estate broker, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Hester, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Munsfordville, Ky., and came to this area in 1945. He attended Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky.

He was a past president of the New Smyrna Beach Board of Realtors and the Committee of 100. Mr. Hester was twice named Realtor of the Year, was a director of the First Federal Savings and Loan and served on the first Planning Board for New Smyrna Beach. He was a member of the New Smyrna Beach Golf Association and served on its advisory board and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Raymond; two daughters, Gayle Lowry, Ocala, and Beverly Haverstock, Louisville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Angler's Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2720, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168. Baldwin Brothers is in charge.

Peter McLaughlin

FEB. 8, 1936 -- JUNE 29, 2004

PALM COAST -- Peter McLaughlin, 68, of Farraday Lane, former owner of F&M Canterbury Service, Rockville Centre, N.Y., died Tuesday at home.

Born in New York City, Mr. McLaughlin moved here in 1998 from Titusville. He was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, Flagler Beach, the Elks Lodge, Space Coast Miata Club and Gun Club of Palm Coast. As sports enthusiast, Mr. McLaughlin enjoyed golf, boating and snow skiing.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years Carolyn; two sons, Michael, Dayton, Ohio, and Peter; a daughter Mary Ann Sherlo, Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; two brothers, Thomas, Melbourne, and John, Wauwatosa, Wis.; two sisters, Mary Bonner, Lakehurst, N.J., and Betty Colleran, Stuart; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church Building Fund or Children's Learning Center, 915 N. Central Ave., Flagler Beach, FL 32136. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Roberta Mancuso

MAY 21, 1938 -- JUNE 28, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Roberta J. Mancuso, 66, of Chris Drive, a retired property manager, died Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Mancuso was born in Concord, Okla., and moved to this area in 1967 from Jay, Okla. She enjoyed sewing, reading and animals.

Survivors include her husband, Ernie; a son, Michael, Daytona Beach; four stepdaughters, Barbara Mancuso, Norfolk, Va., Nora Mancuso, Virginia Beach, Va., Terri Birky, Grover Beach, Calif., and Cathy Laguan, Creston, Calif.; a brother, Donald Allen, Kiowa, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Halifax Humane Society, P.O. Box 9035, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-9035. Phoenix Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Floyd Medders

SEPT. 4, 1955 -- JUNE 29, 2004

OAK HILL -- Floyd Steven Medders, 48, of Indian Creek Road, an aluminum installer in home construction, died Tuesday at South Lake Hospital, Clermont.

A native of Daytona Beach, Mr. Medders was a lifelong area resident. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include a son, Michael, South Daytona; his mother, Leona Medders, Oak Hill; two brothers, Dale, Edgewater, and Kenneth, Alaska; and a sister, Retha Medders, Oak Hill. Settle-Wilder, Edgewater, is in charge.

Helen Rounsevell

JULY 2, 1923 -- JUNE 29, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Helen Rounsevell, 80, of Sweetgum Drive, who retired in 1987 as an accountant, died Tuesday at Majestic Oaks at John Knox Village of Central Florida.

Mrs. Rounsevell was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to this area in 1999 from Athens, Ga. She was a member of Deltona Christian Church. She was also a volunteer at John Knox Village.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Richard; a son, Ronald, Shelby, Ohio; a daughter, Nancy Novy, Ladson, S.C.; a brother, Donald Bordenet, Lansing, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

Nancy Truitt

OCT. 28, 1958 -- JUNE 27, 2004

ORLANDO -- Nancy H. Truitt, 45, of Orlando, a Daytona Beach resident from 1989 to 1997, died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Truitt, a sales manager, was born in Virginia, and moved to Daytona Beach, from Virginia.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; a son, Robert, South Daytona; two daughters, Jamie Truitt, South Daytona, and Kellie Truitt, Orlando; her mother, Donna Hughes, Edgewater; two sisters; and a brother. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Noah Veira

JUNE 30, 2004 -- JUNE 30, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Noah Shawn Thomas Veira, the son of Paul Veira and Crystal Wharton, of 5th Street, was stillborn Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Additional survivors include his paternal grandparents, John Veira and Donna Mullins, both of Orange City; his maternal grandparents, Deborah Shiflett, Charlottesville, Va., and John Wharton Jr., Culpeper, Va.; paternal great-grandparents, Harold and Juanita Mullins, Orange City; and maternal great-grandparents, Sandy and Ruth Story, Charlottesville. Deltona Memorial is in charge.

Carl Baker
FEB. 5, 1924 -- JUNE 30, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Carl W. Baker, 80, of Regent Street, who retired as a barber after 23 years at Country Barber Shop, died Wednesday at Bert Fish Medical Center, New Smyrna Beach.

Mr. Baker moved here in 1986 from his native, Washington, D.C. He enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Wilhelmina; a son, Carl Blankenbaker, Maryland; a daughter, Donna Stuart, Oregon; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. Elza Brodel

JUNE 8, 1920 -- JUNE 30, 2004

DELAND -- Elza Brodel, 84, of North McDonald Avenue, a resident since 1989, died Wednesday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Brodel, a homemaker, was born in New York City and came to this area from East Meadow, N.Y. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Providence, Deltona. Mrs. Brodel enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking, cooking and needlework.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Albert; a son, Charles, Miami; a daughter, Susan Gueci; and two sisters, Bobbie Pierandozzi and Olga Pocsik, both of Fort Lauderdale. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

John Cataneo

SEPT. 17, 1958 -- JUNE 30, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- John N. Cataneo, 45, of Center Avenue, who owned and operated John Cataneo Service Co. for over 10 years, died Wednesday at home where he was shot to death.

Mr. Cataneo moved to this area in 1990 from Staten Island, N.Y., his birthplace He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge and the local pipefitter's union. Mr. Cataneo enjoyed yard work and his pool.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; two sons, Louis and Charles, both of Holly Hill; his mother, A. Phyllis Cataneo, Edgewater; and three sisters, Nancy Chapman, Edgewater, Lou Ann Cataneo, Dover, N.J., and Barbara Candrilli, Wallkill, N.Y. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Robert Herb

JAN. 19, 1920 -- JUNE 28, 2004

JACKSONVILLE -- Robert Edward Lee Herb, 84, of Jacksonville, a former DeLeon Springs resident, died Monday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Herb, an Army veteran of World War II, where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, was born in Macon, Ga. He retired as an office assistant for Georgia Pacific.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruby; two daughters, Caroline Duvall, DeLand, and Susan Brown, Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Billie Johnson

APRIL 28, 1960 - JUNE 30, 2004

ORLANDO -- Billie Leigh "Leah" Johnson, 44, of Orlando, a native of DeLand, died Wednesday at home.

Mrs. Johnson, a retail sales person, was a lifelong resident of Central Florida.

Survivors include two sons, Joshua Walker, DeLand, and Shane Walker, Orlando; daughter, Jessica Walker, DeLand; her stepmother, Christine Heuser, Orlando; and a brother, Durwood Walker, Brooksville. Collison's Howell Branch Funeral Home and Crematory, Winter Park, is in charge.

Elva Lewis

MAY 13, 1930 -- JULY 1, 2004

DELAND -- Elva May Lewis, 74, of Hunters Creek Road, who retired as a bartender in Jackson, Mich., died Thursday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mrs. Lewis was a native of Brooklyn, Mich., and moved here in 1992 from Jackson, Mich., where she was a member of the Eagles. Mrs. Lewis enjoyed reading and card games.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Robert; three sons, Zane Lewis, DeLand, Richard Lennox, Parma, Mich., and Robert Lewis, Jackson; six daughters, Jodie Ross and Robin Boody, both of DeLand, Judy Lennox, Jackson, Bunny Reecer, Concord, Mich., Pamela Vreeland, Michigan Center, Mich., and Roxanne Buccos, Fair Haven, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Dayspring Church of DeLand Building Fund, 1379 W. Taylor Road, DeLand, FL 32720. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.
