FEB. 1, 1916 -- JULY 1, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- John Jerry Santanello, 88, of Williamson Boulevard, a retired papermill worker, died Thursday at Indigo Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Santanello moved to this area in 1990 from his native New Haven, Conn. He attended St. Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosalie Pascarelli, Port Orange; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Volusia Memorial, Port Orange, is in charge.

Harold Shuster

AUG. 11, 1922 -- JULY 1, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Harold W. Shuster, 81, of Cooper Street, who retired as a salesman for a machinery dealership, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Shuster, an Air Force veteran, was born in Apollo, Pa., and came here in 1983 from Delmont, Pa. He was a member of the Port Orange Presbyterian Church and its Men's Work Club, the Masonic lodges No. 437 and 149 F&AM, Crankin A's Ford Model A Club and the Antique Auto Club of America. He enjoyed woodworking, listening to organ music and being a private pilot.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick, Purcellville, Va., and Richard, Trophy Club, Texas; two daughters, Karin Musselman, Charleston, S.C., and Patricia Singer, Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Edgar, Tehachapi, Calif.; and James Vandergrift, Pa.; two sisters, Virginia Goodrich, Concord, Calif., and Dorothy Coleman, Atlantic, Iowa; and five grandsons. Memorial donations may be made to Port Orange Presbyterian Church, 4662 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange FL 32119; or to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Edward Starker

JULY 25, 1941 -- JULY 1, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Edward Lee Starker, 62, of Ocean Shore Boulevard, who retired as the owneroperator of King Edward Trucking in Indianapolis, died Thursday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Starker moved to this area in 2002 from his birthplace, Beech Grove, Ind. He was a member of South Minster Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. Mr. Starker enjoyed bowling, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Shirley; three sons, Edward Jr., Holly Hill, John, Ormond Beach, and Michael, Holly Hill; a daughter, Cynthia Harmon, Indianapolis; his father, Vernon, Beech Grove; and eight grandchildren. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

Arthur Trank

NOV. 20, 1935 -- JUNE 30, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Arthur W. Trank, 68, of Leslie Drive, who retired as a marine worker, died Wednesday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Trank came to this area in 1994 from his native Damariscotta, Maine.

Survivors include a son, Brandon, Port Orange; two daughters, Joy Bowles, Wilmington, N.C., and Susan Trank, Nobleboro, Maine; and three grandchildren. Shannon, Port Orange, is in charge.

Richard VanAtta

MARCH 6, 1931 -- JULY 1, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Richard George VanAtta, 73, of South Sparkman Avenue, who retired in 1994 as a bridge tender working for the Department of Transportation, died Thursday at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.

Mr. VanAtta, a Coast Guard veteran, was born in Olean, N.Y., and came here in 1976 from Corry, Pa.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Barbara; five sons, Kevin, Orange City, Michael, DeLand, Richie, Rutherford, N.J., Marritt, De Ridder, La., and Richard, Stuart; a daughter, Kimberly Sparkes, Asheville, N.C.; two sisters, Muriel Lingenfelter, Ohio, and Cheryl Smyth, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, Orange City, is in charge.

Gene Waters

OCT. 21, 1946 -- JULY 1, 2004

ORLANDO -- Gene B. Waters, 57, of Orlando, the relative of several Volusia County residents, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Waters, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Orlando and where he was a lifelong resident. He was a service agent for Delta Airlines. Mr. Waters was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church, Winter Park.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Paula; two sons, Jason, Live Oak, and Joshua, Orlando; a daughter, Shannon Murray, Live Oak; a sister, Darlene Cassaro, Deltona; and two grandchildren. Collison's Howell Branch Funeral Home and Crematory, Winter Park, is in charge.

Milton Beck

FEB. 9, 1965 -- FEB. 24, 2005

FLAGLER BEACH -- Milton M. Beck, 40, of Snowbird Lane, a former boat crewman in Jeffersonville, Ind., died Thursday at home.

Mr. Beck moved here in 1982 from Star Lake, N.Y., his birthplace. He enjoyed the outdoors, the woods and being on the water.

Survivors include four brothers, John, Florida, Francis, Gouverneur, N.Y., Paul, Clayton, Ga., and Robert, Amarillo, Texas; and three sisters, Teri Blevins, Holly Hill, Rebecca Durham, Louisiana, and Mary Ward, Oswegatchie, N.Y. Hannah Cremation, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Richard Bruno

MAY 28, 1953 -- FEB. 27, 2005

DEBARY -- Richard A. Bruno, 51, of Angeles Road, a master electrician at the Volusia County Courthouse, DeLand, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Bruno was born in Cincinnati and moved to this area in 1998 from Covington, Ky. He was also an amateur radio operator.

Survivors include his wife of five years, Betty Jo Aman; two daughters, Christine Helinski, Albany, N.Y., and Rachel Schipano, Greenville, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Christy Aman, DeBary, and Valerie Aman, Utica, N.Y.; his mother, Virginia Tehan, Covington; four brothers, Gerald and David, both of DeBary, and Daniel and Michael, both of Ormond Beach; and 10 grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

John Covais Jr.

NOV. 12, 1955 -- FEB. 27, 2005

BUNNELL -- John Covais Jr., 49, of Kentucky Avenue, a former employee of Boeing Aircraft, died Sunday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Covais, a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, was born in Amityville, N.Y. He moved to this area in 2000 from Seattle.

Survivors include a son, Robert, Seattle; a daughter, Meghann Covais, Riverside, Calif.; his mother, Rose Morsellino, Bunnell; four brothers, Gary, Palm Coast, Lenny, Sarasota, Alan, Flanders, N.Y., and Dean, Sound Beach, N.Y.; and a sister, Linda Covais, Oak Hill, N.Y. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Mary Crocker

MARCH 31, 1918 -- FEB. 21, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mary Rogers Crocker, 86, of North Halifax Drive, who retired in 1977 as a librarian, died Feb. 21 at the home of her daughter, Marilee Crocker, Brewster, Mass.

Mrs. Crocker was born in Atlanta and moved to this area in 1977 from Demarest, N.J. She attended Agnes Scott College, Atlanta. She was a member of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, where she served as a church elder, and was a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club, the Garden Club of the Halifax Country and the Garden Club of America. An environmentalist, Mrs. Crocker enjoyed sailing, tennis, gardening, bridge and walks on the beach.

Additional survivors include three sons, Joseph, Cambridge, Minn., LeRoy, St. Helena Island, S.C., and David, Seattle; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32176, or to Halifax Urban Ministries, P.O. Box 6053, Daytona Beach, FL 32122. Coutinho-Boisse Funeral Home, Harwich, Mass., is in charge.

Rogelio Cruz

JULY 16, 1928 -- FEB. 27, 2005

DELTONA -- Rogelio Cruz, 76, of Anderson Drive, a former printing apprentice, died Sunday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City.

Mr. Cruz, an Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Puerto Rico, and moved here in 1989 from the Bronx, N.Y. He was a member of the Forest City Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church. Mr. Cruz enjoyed sports, fishing, Yankees baseball and playing dominos.

Survivors include his wife, Maria; a son, Eliesel, Puerto Rico; two daughters, Margie Leinberger and Evelyn Anania, both of Deltona; two brothers, Van, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jose, Puerto Rico; a sister, Rosita Rivera, Brooklyn; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Altman-Long, DeBary, is in charge.

Geraldine Erbe

FEB. 13, 1922 -- FEB. 28, 2005

DELTONA -- Geraldine R. Erbe, 83, of North Normandy Boulevard, a medical transcriptionist for 13 years in DeLand before her retirement, died Monday at home.

A native of Wilton, Conn., Mrs. Erbe moved here in 1971 from North Haven, Conn. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in DeBary.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Weeks, Deltona; a daughter, Deborah Lehner, Sanford; a stepson, Joseph Jr., Ormond Beach; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Eric Erickson

JAN. 14, 1926-FEB. 26, 2005

ORMOND BEACH -- Eric Olaf Erickson, 79, of Riverwood Drive, a retired self-employed accountant, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Erickson, an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, was born in Boston and moved to this area in 1975. He enjoyed flying.

Survivors include two sons, John, Cincinnati, and Thomas, Houston; two daughters, Christina Reid, Sugar Land, Texas, and Jane Howard, Burleson, Texas; and eight grandchildren. Haigh-Black is in charge.
