Joseph Torzillo

FEB. 28, 1928 -- JULY 20, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Joseph A. Torzillo, 76, South Atlantic Avenue, a Sears service manager in Connecticut before his retirement, died Tuesday at Bert Fish Medical Center.

A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Torzillo moved here in 1996 from Guilford, Conn. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and Elks Lodge 1557. Mr. Torzillo also was a member and past president of the Bahamian Club Condo Association.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Stella; two sons, Joseph, North Branford, Conn., and David, Cromwell, Conn.; three daughters, Diane Gallegos, Middletown, Conn., Linda Bradford, Tunbridge, Vt., and Lisa Patenaude, New Port Richey; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174; or to American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Ada Watson

SEPT. 13, 1926 -- JULY 20, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Ada Ruth Watson, 77, of Interchange Boulevard, a resident since 2002, died Tuesday at Alterra Assisted Living Facility of Ormond Beach.

Mrs. Watson, a homemaker, was born in Old Hickory, Tenn., and moved to this area from Dearborn, Mich. She was a member of the Allen Park Church of Christ, Dearborn, the Optimist civic organization and the Plum Hollow Golf Club, Southfield, Mich., where she golfed and bowled.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Watson, Palm Coast, and Beverly Bernard, Birmingham, Mich.; and three grandchildren. Newlife Cremation is in charge.

Dora Brown

MARCH 15, 1909 -- JULY 18, 2004

TITUSVILLE -- Dora Bell Brown, 95, of Titusville, a native of New Smyrna Beach, died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Brown, a fifth generation Floridian and a member of the Bell and Galbreath pioneer families, moved to Titusville from New Smyrna Beach in 1928. She was a former secretary of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rockledge, and Our Savior Catholic Church, Cocoa Beach. Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Titusville. An avid bridge player, she also was an accomplished violinist.

Survivors include a sister, Evelyn "Fliss" Bell, Titusville, four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care Foundation, 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Suite 280, Melbourne, FL 32934. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Marie Brown

OCT. 9, 1919 -- JULY 19, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Marie E. Brown, 84, of Natchez Lane, a former school library aide in New York, died Monday at Atlantic Shores Nursing Home, Melbourne.

Mrs. Brown moved here in 1985 from her native Syracuse, N.Y. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Christian Women's Association and Fideles, all of New Smyrna Beach, the Friendship Force, Daytona Beach, and Order of the Eastern Star in Syracuse. A former Sunday school teacher, she also was a literacy volunteer. Mrs. Brown enjoyed creative writing, travel, camping and volunteering at the library.

Survivors include a son, Gerald, Palm Bay; two daughters, Nancy Papaleoni, Syracuse, and Kathy Heller, Hampton, Va.; a brother, Harwood Strobeck, Eagle Bay, N.Y.; five sisters, Harriet Rose, Liverpool, N.Y., Kathleen Fales, Isle la Motte, Vt., Laura Arthur, Syracuse, Beverly Weaver, Mattydale, N.Y., and Carol Brann, Hastings, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 214 Sams Ave., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168; or Weusthoff Brevard Hospice, 8060 Spyglass Hill Road, Melbourne, FL 32940. Robert Burns

SEPT. 24, 1931 -- JULY 17, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Robert Camp Burns, 72, of Merrimac Drive, Ponce Inlet town manager from 1990 to 1997, died Saturday at home.

A native of St. Augustine, Mr. Burns was served as a director of the Space and Aeronautical Defense Mapping Agency before his retirement from the Air Force in 1981. During his military career, he received the Bronze Star, Air, Defense Superior Service and Meritorious Service medals. He was Ponce Inlet clerk-treasurer from 1983 to 1990. A 1953 graduate of the University of Florida, Mr. Burns also graduated from the Armed Forces Staff and Air War colleges. He was a member of Port Orange Presbyterian Church, Volusia League of Cities, Volusia City Managers Association and was a past director of the Ponce Inlet Community Center. Mr. Burns also served 14 years on the Port Orange Fire Pension Board.

Survivors include his wife Catherine; two daughters, Lynne Tiner, St. Augustine, and Sandy Jarrett, Jacksonville; a stepson, Shawn Jenkins, Charleston, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Caren Koehn, Daytona Beach, and Susan Akins, Apopka; six grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Port Orange Presbyterian Church, 4662 Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange, FL 32129. Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine, is in charge.

Muriel Colligan

FEB. 24, 1913 -- JULY 17, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Muriel K. Colligan, 91, of Birdie Drive, the recreation director for the New York City Parks and Recreation Department before her retirement, died Saturday at Bert Fish Medical Center.

Mrs. Colligan moved here in 1977 from her native Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of the Council of Catholic Women and the church board of education. Mrs. Colligan served on the New Smyrna Beach Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and was a member of the Fairgreen Golf Association and the American Association of University Women.

Survivors include a son, George III, Turin, N.Y.; a brother, James Kiernan, Miami; a sister, Rita Devine, Chevy Chase, Md.; two grandchildren; and a step-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart School Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 729, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170. Dudley, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

T. Richard Fahey

MARCH 26, 1912 -- JULY 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- T. Richard Fahey, 91, of Gull Drive South, a native of Newark, N.J., died Sunday at The Terrace of Daytona Beach.

Mr. Fahey, a retired engineer, moved here in 1981 from Chatham, N.J. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange, and the Pelican Bay Country Club. He enjoyed painting in water colors and travel.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine. Baggett & Summers is in charge.

Theodora Fisher

AUG. 31, 1921 -- JULY 18, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Theodora Fisher, 82, of South Ridgewood Avenue, a native of Minneapolis, died Sunday at Bridgeview Nursing Home.

Mrs. Fisher, who worked in retail sales before her retirement, moved to this area in May from Deerfield Beach. She was a past president of the Cancer Aid Society in Washington, D.C., and a hospital volunteer for 27 years in Fort Lauderdale. Mrs. Fisher enjoyed baking and ceramics.

Survivors include two sons, Jack, Port Orange, and Marc, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Sidney and Donald Levin, both of Minneapolis; a sister, Zora Marks, Ormond Beach; and a granddaughter. Eric Foster

MARCH 21, 1984 -- JULY 17, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Eric Michael Foster, 20, of East Cherokee Avenue, a native of Winter Park, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-Waterman, Tavares, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Eustis.

Mr. Foster, an Army National Guard veteran, was a lifelong Central Florida resident. He enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Douglas and Tracy Foster and two brothers, Brett and Devin, all of Orange City; and his paternal grandparents, Lewis and Dolores Foster. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Mary Gipe

DEC. 29, 1925 -- JULY 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Mary Elizabeth "Mazie" Gipe, 78, of North Halifax Avenue, a resident since 1984, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Gipe, a homemaker, was born in Toledo, Ohio, and moved here from Oregon, Ohio. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach and its Seekers Class, and the Shuffleboard Club and Senior Center, both in Ormond Beach.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Kenneth; three sons, Kenneth, Port Clinton, Ohio; David, Charlotte, N.C., and Douglas, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; and eight grandchildren. Sarah Greven

APRIL 4, 1915 -- JULY 19, 2004

DELAND -- Sarah Hawkins Greven, 89, of Chipola Avenue, a native of Birmingham, Ala., died Monday at home.

Mrs. Greven, a homemaker, moved to this area in 1971 from Medford Lakes, N.J. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its Altar Guild and Claudia Circle, and the Orchid Circle of the DeLand Garden Club.

Survivors include two sons, John, Portland, Ore., and Phillip Jr., Highland Park, N.J.; two daughters, Julia Fareri, Stratford, N.J., and Nancy Van Laan, Doylestown, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Odis Hampton Jr.

DEC. 17, 1942 -- JULY 17, 2004

DELTONA -- Odis Hampton Jr., 61, of Corrigan Drive, a math teacher and Warner Christian Academy and professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, died Saturday at home.

Mr. Hampton, an Army retiree who flew Cobra helicopters in the Vietnam War, was born in Fountain Inn, S.C. He moved here in 1990 from Edgewater. For his military service, he received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Hampton was a member of Disabled American Veterans and Retired Military Officers Association. He enjoyed fishing, travel and playing pinochle.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Yvonne; four sons, Jonathan, Deltona, David, Port St. Lucie, Christopher, San Diego, and Michael, Strawberry Plains, Tenn.; a brother, Robert, Boynton Beach; and six grandchildren. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Russell Harden Jr.

JUNE 9, 1927 -- JULY 17, 2004

ORMOND BEACH -- Russell J. Harden Jr., 77, of Hickory Hills Circle, a retired chef, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Harden, an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, moved to this area in 1976 from his native Fond du Lac, Wis. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 26, Fond du Lac. An avid reader, he also was a stock car racing and Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mae; a son, Russell III, Ormond Beach; a daughter, Sharon Davis, Broomfield, Colo.; two brothers, Gene, Castle Rock, Colo., and John Harden, San Diego; and a sister, Muriel Svec, Los Angeles. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.
