MARCH 18, 1911 -- AUG. 9, 2004

ST. AUGUSTINE -- Jennie Viola Corson, 93, of St. Augustine, a former DeBary resident, died Monday at Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine.

Mrs. Corson was born in Sunbury, Pa. She was a member of Orange City First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, St. Augustine, and Edgar Jr., Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Krohn, Lewisburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine, is in charge.

Delores Funkey

MAY 24, 1926 -- AUG. 9, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Delores K. Funkey, 78, of Veterans Memorial Parkway, a resident since 1984, died Monday at Majestic Oaks.

Mrs. Funkey, a homemaker, was born in Chicago and came here from Higgins Lake, Mich. She was a member of The Chapel At John Knox Village. Mrs. Funkey attended the University of Michigan and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Jack; a son, Robert, Rochester, Mich.; and six grandchildren. Newlife Cremation, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

James Goss

APRIL 12, 1938 -- AUG. 9, 2004

CLERMONT -- James Michael Goss, 66, of Clermont, who worked at The Daytona Beach News-Journal for 19 years retiring in 1998 as safety director, died Monday at South Lake Hospital.

Mr. Goss was born in Flint, Mich., where he also retired as a foreman with General Motors. He moved to Clermont four months ago from Vero Beach. He was a member of the United Auto Workers and Brevard County Golf Course.

Survivors include three sons, Tom, Clermont, William, Eaton Rapids, Mich., and Robert, Linwood, Mich.; two daughters, Mary Wilson, Melbourne, and Cathy McRorie, Flushing, Mich.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to STAR WTeens, P.O. Box 560074, Rockledge, FL 32956. Becker Funeral Home, Clermont, is in charge.

Hattie Jones

MAY 9, 1915 -- AUG. 6, 2004

MARIANNA -- Hattie Vera Jones, 89, of Marianna, a former Bunnell resident, died Friday at Sunland Center.

Ms. Jones was born in Espanola.

No known immediate relatives survive. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Edith Morgan

SEPT. 9, 1925 -- AUG. 10, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Edith N. Morgan, 78, of Silver Palm Drive, a resident since 1998, died Tuesday at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Smyrna Beach.

Mrs. Morgan, a homemaker, was born in Olyphant, Pa., and moved to this area from Holyoke, Mass. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach, and enjoyed music and bingo.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, Falls, Pa., and Richard, Lake Orion, Mich.; six daughters, Sandie Hodgkins, Edgewater, Elizabeth Rosato, Hazelton, Pa., Edith Gilley, Wales, Mass., Margaret Morgan, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Nancy Jordon, Aston, Pa.; and Lois Plummer, The Netherlands; four brothers, Joseph Nixon, Boca Raton, Hugh Nixon, Farmville, Va., John Nixon, Simpsonville, S.C., and Robert Nixon, Medford, N.J.; three sisters, Monica Kenney, Olyphant, Joan Guinane, Somerville, N.J., and Betty Javick, Hockessin, Del.; and 14 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Miami, FL 33136. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Michelle Nathan

JAN. 16, 1985 -- AUG. 6, 2004

DELTONA -- Michelle Ann Nathan, 19, of Fayson Circle, who worked on the management team at Burger King, was killed on Friday at a home on Teleford Lane in a case still under investigation.

Miss Nathan, who served in the Army, was born in Tulsa, Okla., and moved here in 1989 from Oklahoma. She attended Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was very artistic.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Kay and Mark Shukwit, Deltona; her father, Stephen Nathan; four brothers, Mark Shukwit Jr., Deltona, Adam Nathan, Sanford, Hunter Henry, Casselberry, and Micah Nathan, Oklahoma; three sisters, Amber Nathan, Deltona, Danielle Nathan, Arkansas, and Dominique Nathan, Oklahoma; her maternal grandmother, Claire Nathan, Casselberry; her paternal grandmother, Althea Nathan; and her grandparents, Edward and Madeline Shukwit, Pennsylvania. Baldauff, Orange City, is in charge.

Jeanne Preston

MARCH 28, 1911 -- AUG. 7, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Jeanne Margaret Kurtz Preston, 93, of LPGA Boulevard, who taught art and home economics in the Grand Rapids Public School System in Michigan, died Saturday at Bishop's Glen.

A native of Sebewaing, Mich., Mrs. Preston graduated in 1933 from Rockford College, Rockford, Ill. Before she moved to this area from Grand Rapids in 1978, she was a member of the Women's City Club, Ladies Literacy Society and served as a volunteer for the Blind Guild of Service League and the Grand Rapids Public Library. Mrs. Preston also was a member of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Garden Club of the Halifax Country and the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences Guild.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah "Katie" Dodd, Daytona Beach; two brothers, Raymond Kurtz, Brackettville, Texas, and Walter Kurtz, Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Harriet Norris, Daytona Beach, and Margaret Tansey, Port Angeles, Wash.; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons. Memorial donations may be made to Scholarship Fund of the Garden Club of the Halifax Country, 333 Ocean Shore Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL 32176; or to Ormond Art Museum Endowment Fund, 78 E. Lillian Selcke

AUG. 4, 1906 -- AUG. 11, 2004

DELAND -- Lillian L. Selcke, 98, of Chipola Avenue, a telephone operator who retired after 35 years with LucentWestern, died Wednesday at home.

Mrs. Selcke moved to this area in 1979 from Chicago, her birthplace. She was a member of Holy Name Society.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth, Lemont, Ill., and Lawrence, Benton, Ill.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Lankford, DeLand, is in charge.

Blanche Tucker

APRIL 6, 1916 -- AUG. 9, 2004

HAW CREEK -- Blanche Tilton Tucker, 88, of State Road 11, a co-owner and bookkeeper of the Haw Creek Ranch, died Monday at home.

Mrs. Tucker was born in San Mateo, and moved to the Flagler County area in 1943 from Putnam County. She graduated from the Latter Day Saints Business College in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Tucker was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bunnell Ward, where she played the piano and was a three-time president of the Women's Relief Society. She also was a past member the Florida Cattleman's and American Quarter-Horse associations.

Survivors include six daughters, Brenda Boyd and Denise Barton, both of Haw Creek, Allida Heaton, Alton, Utah, Colleen Sorenson, Glendale, Utah, Eve Bundy, St. George, Utah, and Teresa Robinson, Cedar City, Utah; a brother, Jack Tilton, San Mateo; a sister, Edith Herrington, Palatka; 37 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge.

Celia Youngblood

APRIL 6, 1940 -- AUG. 10, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Celia Hickson Youngblood, 64, of Brentwood Drive, a native of Bartow, Ga., died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center.

Mrs. Youngblood, a homemaker, came to this area in 1965 from her birthplace. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and reading.

Survivors include two sons, Tommy Tillman, Daytona Beach, and Cecil Youngblood, Sanford; a daughter, Patricia Youngblood-Douglas, Daytona Beach; a brother, Robert Hickson, Bartow; two sisters, Elizabeth Johnson, Atlanta, and Mattie Hickson, Orlando; and a grandchild. Gainous is in charge.

Andrew Ashton

MAY 1, 1930 -- AUG. 8, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Andrew Jackson Ashton, 74, of Sandra Circle, who retired after 20 years as a sergeant in the Marine Corps, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Ashton was born in New Smyrna Beach. He attended Daytona Beach Community College and Florida Technological University where he majored in art education. He was also an artist, builder and draftsman. Mr. Ashton was a member of American Legion Post No. 17. As a young man, he played minor league baseball and was a cartoonist for the DBCC school newspaper.

Survivors include a son, Daniel, Gainesville; a daughter, Fran Ashton, New Smyrna Beach; a brother, E.K., Edgewater; and two sisters, Polly Morris, New Smyrna Beach, and Betty Rash, Fort Myers Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Glen Averyt

AUG. 4, 1925 -- AUG. 7, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Glen Eugene Averyt, 79, of Starboard Avenue, an accounting manager with Johnsmanville Accounting from 1958 to 1982, died Saturday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

A native of Lindsey, Okla., Mr. Averyt was an Army veteran of World War II who received the Purple Heart. He moved to this area in 1995 from Panama City, where he had resided since 1982. He was a member of Edgewater Alliance Church and the National Association of Accountants. Mr. Averyt enjoyed working on his computer and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Adah; three sons, Raymond, Gainesville, Arlan, Tustin, Calif., and Ronald, Severn, Md.; a brother, Virgil, Edgewater; a sister, Lorraine Vincent, Lynn Haven; and three grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Edgewater Alliance Church Mission Fund, 310 N. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, FL 32132. Settle-Wilder, Edgewater, is in charge.

Nellie Bell

DEC. 26, 1922 -- AUG. 10, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Nellie W. Bell, 84, of Hudson Street, a retired cook, died Tuesday at home.

Mrs. Bell was born in Selma, Ala., and moved here in 1944 from Mobile, Ala. She was a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Louis and John, both of Daytona Beach; two daughters, Nellie Baldwin, Valdosta, Ga., and Gladys Shells, Miramar Beach; two brothers, Charles Gary, Daytona Beach, and Roosevelt Gary, Fort Lauderdale; 22 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Thompson is in charge.

Richard Bradley

NOV. 14, 1923 -- AUG. 9, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Richard Moore Bradley, 80, of Kingbird Circle, a retired professor emeritus for Clarion State College, Clarion, Pa., died Monday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mr. Bradley, a Navy veteran of World War II, was born in Lancaster, Pa., and moved here in 1979 from Shippenville, Pa. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange. Mr. Bradley earned his bachelor's degree from Millersville State College, and his master's degree and doctorate from Temple University, both in Pennsylvania. He enjoy golf, fishing, bowling, dancing and playing the guitar. He wrote and directed an educational film, "The Parent's Role as Teacher."

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Blanche; a daughter, Jean Wilt, Salisbury, Pa.; a brother, Roger, East Petersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Lois Weaver and Faye Jones, both of Millersville; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Association of Greater Daytona Beach Inc., 111 N. Frederick Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Cardwell & Maloney, Port Orange, is in charge.
