Lizandra Betancourt

JULY 22, 1959 -- AUG. 8, 2004

DEBARY -- Lizandra Betancourt, 45, of South Pine Meadow Drive, a federal judge for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in New York, died Sunday at Florida Hospital-Altamonte Springs.

Ms. Betancourt was born in New York City, and moved here in 1996 from New York. She earned a bachelor's degree from Hofstra University and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Ms. Betancourt was a member of the New York Bar, Latino Law, New Jersey Bar and the American Bar associations. She enjoyed baseball, football and reading.

Survivors include her parents, Manuel and Virginia Betancourt, DeBary; and a sister, Marlene Thyer, New York City. Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3659 Maguire Blvd., Suite 110, Orlando, FL 32803. Carpenter-Curry, DeLand, is in charge.

Frank Biondi

MARCH 29, 1916 -- AUG. 7, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Frank J. Biondi, 88, of Rogers Avenue, who retired after 20 years as an industrial mechanic for Armstrong Rubber Co., West Haven, Conn., died Saturday at Port Orange Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Biondi, a Navy veteran of World War II, moved here in 1980 from his native New Haven. He was a member of the American Legion Post 270 and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3282.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; a son, Frank Jr., New Hampshire; two step-sons, Richard Carlson, Tolland, Conn., and Marshall Onofrio, Hamden, Conn.; a brother, Angelo Jr., West Haven; two sisters, Grace Secki and Raephel Conzo, both of Edgewater; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 555 W. Granada Blvd., Suite A-1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Cardwell & Maloney is in charge.

John Calabro

JUNE 15, 1933 -- AUG. 8, 2004

SOUTH DAYTONA -- John Calabro, 71, of Eastern Road, a retired air traffic controller, died Sunday at the Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mr. Calabro, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, was born in Ogdensburg, N.J. He moved to this area in 1978 from Richmond, Va. He was a past commodore of the Daytona Beach Boat Club and member of the Moose Lodge, Ormond Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ann; two sons, Mathew Calabro, Tampa, and Mark Norman, Titusville; a sister, Josephine Roskelly, Franklin, N.J.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Alavon Direct Cremation is in charge.

Jean Dubois

APRIL 8, 1910 -- AUG. 8, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Jean C. Dubois, 94, of South Atlantic Avenue, a retired welder, died Sunday at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Dubois was born in Bay St. Paul, Quebec, and moved here in 1973 from Central Park-Dover, N.H. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He enjoyed planting roses at the church and around town and was the "beach handyman, " fixing the steps for beach walkways.

Survivors include two sons, Donald, Somersworth, N.H., and Richard, Rochester, N.H.; a daughter, Doris Lucier, Pompano Beach; two brothers, Joseph, Dayton, Maine, and Henry, Biddeford, Maine; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 4000 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Myrtie Erickson

OCT. 4, 1909 -- AUG. 8, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Myrtie Erickson, 99, of Eighth Street, a resident since 2000, died Sunday at home.

Mrs. Erickson was born in Rockport, Maine, and moved here from West Palm Beach.

Survivors include three sons, George Lindahl, Maryland, and Richard and David Lindahl, both of Maine; four daughters, Nancy Leonard, Maine, and Ethel Bamford, Patty Collins and Margaret Hallgren, all of Florida; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. National Cremation Society, Melbourne, is in charge.

Richard Furtado

APRIL 29, 1922 -- AUG. 7, 2004

DELAND -- Richard P. Furtado, 82, of North Stone Street, a purser for the Steamship Authority for 47 years before his retirement, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-DeLand.

Mr. Furtado, who worked on the last steamship, the Nobska, was born in New Bedford, Mass., and moved here in 2001 from Vineyard Haven, Mass., where he was a member of St. Augustine's Church.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas, Falmouth, Mass., and Richard, Nashua, N.H.; a daughter, Barbara Baldwin, DeLand; a brother, Sylvester, Williamsport, Md.; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2568, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs, Mass., is in charge.

Pamela Griffis

APRIL 28, 1949 -- AUG. 7, 2004

HOLLY HILL -- Pamela Susan Griffis, 55, of Hammock Drive, a Daytona Beach native, died Saturday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Ms. Griffis, a factory worker, was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, Daytona Beach. She enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening and computers.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Manning IV; a daughter, Bridget Turner; a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Linda Manning and Leah Cantrell. Memorial donations may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 777 Colfax Drive, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Albert Habegger

OCT. 15, 1930 -- AUG. 8, 2004

LAKE HELEN -- Albert Raymond Habegger, 73, of East Kicklighter Road, a custodian for West Volusia county schools, died Sunday at Oakwood Garden of DeLand.

Born in White Plains, N.Y., Mr. Habegger moved here in 1980 from Orlando. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include a sister, Lorraine McGinnity, Lake Helen. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Ada Hanson

JULY 24, 1913 -- AUG. 7, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Ada M. Hanson, 91, of North Center Street, a medical secretary for the late Dr. Thomas Scott, the first neurosurgeon in Daytona Beach, before her retirement in 1991, died Saturday at Coquina Center, Ormond Beach.

Mrs. Hanson was born in Virden, Ill., and moved to this area in 1954 from Michigan. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach. Mrs. Hanson enjoyed reading and cats.

Survivors include her caregiver, Judith A. Birnie. Pinello is in charge.

Elwood Holloway

APRIL 1, 1944 -- AUG. 7, 2004

DELAND -- Elwood B. Holloway, 60, of South Amelia Avenue, a native of Orange City, died Saturday at Oakwood Garden of DeLand.

Mr. Holloway enjoyed watching sports and news on television.

Survivors include two brothers, Kenneth, Eustis, and Bobby, Michigan. Carpenter-Curry is in charge.

Mary Landis

MAY 30, 1915 -- AUG. 9, 2004

PALM COAST -- Mary S. Landis, 89, of Poinsettia Lane, an Avon representative for more than 50 years in Forrest Park, Ga., died Monday at Grand Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Ms. Landis was born in Chattahoochee, and moved here in 2003 from Forrest Park. She was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, Forrest Park. An Atlanta Braves fan, Ms. Landis enjoyed fishing and travel.

Survivors include a son, Forrest Jr., and a daughter, Mary Lou Mathen, both of Palm Coast; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

James McCants

MAY 2, 1917 -- AUG. 8, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- James McCants, 87, of Winchester Street, a former truck driver, died Sunday at Avante At Ormond Beach.

Mr. McCants, who worked for Mayflower Trucking, Allied Trucking and Daytona Paving Co., was born in Dooley County, Ga. He moved here in 1969 from Brunswick, Ga. He enjoyed watching football and basketball.

Survivors include six sons, Eddie, Willie and Grady, all of Daytona Beach, Thomas and Claude, both of Atlanta, and Essie, Bishop, Ga.; five daughters, Ruby Gillam and Sindy McCants, both of Daytona Beach, Beulah Johnson, New Smyrna Beach, Betty McCants, Tampa, and Roxie Porter, Washington, D.C.; 50 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Gainous is in charge.

Elizabeth MacKenzie

JULY 11, 1953 - AUG. 7, 2004

DEBARY -- Elizabeth MacKenzie, 51, of Enterprise Road, a former nursing assistant, died Saturday at Orange City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, DeBary.

Ms. MacKenzie was born in Calais, Maine, and moved to this area in 1995 from Maine.

Survivors include a son, George, Orange City; and two brothers, Robert and Gerald MacKenzie, and a sister, Georgia Carter, all of Maine. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.
