Ada Hanson

JULY 24, 1913 -- AUG. 7, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Ada M. Hanson, 91, of North Center Street, medical secretary for the late Dr. Thomas Scott, the first neurosurgeon in Daytona Beach, before her retirement, died Saturday at Coquina Center, Ormond Beach.

Mrs. Hanson was born in Virden, Ill., and moved to this area in 1954 from Michigan. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach. Mrs. Hanson enjoyed reading and cats.

Survivors include her caregiver, Judith A. Brine. Memorial donations may be made to the Halifax Humane Society, P.O. Box 9035, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-9035. Pinello is in charge.

Lateaco Johnson

JULY 11, 1973 -- AUG. 6, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Lateaco S. Johnson, 31, a resident since 1985, died Friday at Halifax Medical Center following a long illness.

Ms. Johnson, a homemaker, was born in East Palatka and moved here from Bunnell. She graduated from Mainland High School. She enjoyed cooking, dancing and doing hair.

Survivors include three daughters, Rochelle Johnson, Marshay Emmons and Shaquanda Barnes, all of Daytona Beach; her father, Carl Johnson, Palatka; and her mother, Elizabeth Anderson and a brother, Tyrone Brown, both of Daytona Beach. Thompson is in charge.

Despina Pappadakos

FEB. 15, 1916 -- AUG. 8, 2004

ORMOND-BY-THE-SEA -- Despina Pappadakos, 88, of Starlight Drive, a retired seamstress, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Pappadakos was born in Nysirios Dodecanis, Greece, and moved here in 1980 from Boston. She was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and its St. Barbara Philoptochos women's group. Mrs. Pappadakos enjoyed knitting blankets for indigent people and was a caregiver for a neighbor for many years. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for the annual Greek Festival.

Survivors include a son, George, and a daughter, Yiota Kiriakes, both of Ormond Beach; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; or St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 129 N. Halifax Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. Haigh-Black, Ormond Beach, is in charge.

John Babey

JULY 8, 1913 -- AUG. 4, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- John Babey, 91, of Grand Plaza Drive, the owner of a home appliance store in Westbury, N.Y., before his retirement, died Wednesday at Oak Tree Healthcare Center, South Daytona.

Mr. Babey, an Army veteran of World War II, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, was born in Czechoslovakia and moved here in 1979 from Wantagh, N.Y. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where he was head usher, Knights of Columbus, fourth degree knight, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093, DeBary. He ran bingo for the Knights of Columbus for 24 years and was captain of the Tootsie Roll drive. Mr. Babey enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth; two sons, John, Haymarket, Va., and Jeffery, Northport, N.Y.; three grandsons; and four great-grandsons. Memorial donations may be made to Knights of Columbus Chapter 6584, 1385 Maximillian St., Deltona, FL 32725. Deltona Memorial, Orange City, is in charge.

Leo Cericola

APRIL 5, 1925 -- AUG. 5, 2004

BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Leo F. Cericola, 79, of Bethlehem Township, a part-time Daytona Beach resident since 1985, died Thursday at VNA Hospice of St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Cericola, a Navy veteran of World War II, who served aboard the USS George W. Ingram as a machinist mate second class, was born in Easton, Pa. He graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1951, and later owned and operated Cericola Chiropractic Clinic, Bethlehem Township, before his retirement in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Florence; two sons, L. Scott, Bath, Pa., and John, Lower Nazareth Township, Pa.; two daughters, Sheila Clarke, Lower Nazareth Township, and Jennifer Marakovits, Bath; a sister, Charlass Wyly, Daytona Beach; and eight grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of St. Luke's Hospital, 709 Delaware Ave., Bethlehem, PA 18015. Morello Funeral Home, Palmer, Pa., is in charge.

Sandra Douglas

MARCH 13, 1962 -- AUG. 6, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Sandra J. Douglas, 42, of Tracy Street, an accountant for Wal-Mart, died Friday at home.

Ms. Douglas was born in New Smyrna, Tenn., and moved here in 1974 from Altus, Okla. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Ms. Douglas enjoyed reading, especially the Bible, fishing and going on cruises.

Survivors include her parents, James and Georgina Douglas, Daytona Beach; a brother, James Douglas, DeLand; and four sisters, Beverly Douglas, Birmingham, Ala., Jo Anne Tucker, Lakeland, Debbie Hadley, Norwich, Vt., and Paula Bower. Woodward, Holly Hill, is in charge.

Robert Gallagher

AUG. 6, 1950 -- AUG. 3, 2004

Sandra Gallagher

AUG. 24, 1949 -- AUG. 3, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Robert Martin Gallagher, 53, and his wife, Sandra T. Gallagher, 54, both of Mason Park Drive, were found dead at their home Tuesday. Autopsy results are pending.

Mr. Gallagher was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and Mrs. Gallagher was a homemaker. The couple moved here in 1995 from their native Elizabeth, N.J.

Their survivors include her daughter and his step-daughter, Shelley Brito, Daytona Beach, and her three children. Mr. Gallagher is also survived by three brothers, John, Clearwater, Dennis, Valrico, and Fred, Lexington, S.C.; and a sister, Kathleen Campbell, Valrico. Additional survivors for Mrs. Gallagher include her mother, Genevieve Alpaugh, two brothers, James and John Alpaugh, and two sisters, Linda Santoli and June Morgan, all of New Jersey. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Ethel Goodwin

DEC. 27, 1913 -- AUG. 4, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Ethel Goodwin, 90, of Ridgeport Lane, a native of Cleveland, died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange.

Mrs. Goodwin, a homemaker, moved here in 1995 from her birthplace. She was a member of Beachside Baptist Church. An avid bridge player, she was a follower of Goren Bridge in the newspaper, and enjoyed golf.

Survivors include a son, John, Edgewater; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

William Grubbs

SEPT. 6, 1928 -- AUG. 7, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- William T. Grubbs, 75, of Rasley Road, owner of Grubbs Wholesale Nursery, died Saturday at St. Luke's Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville.

Mr. Grubbs moved here in 1954 from his native St. Augustine. He began his nursery business in Port Orange.

Survivors include two sons, Gary, Port Orange, and Tad, Marathon; a daughter, Gwen McDowell, Port Orange; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Shannon, Port Orange, is in charge.

Edna Hall

NOV. 26, 1926 -- AUG. 6, 2004

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Edna M. Hall, 77, of Old Mission Road, a retired waitress, died Friday at home.

Mrs. Hall, who also was homemaker, was born in Princeton, W.Va., and moved here in 1946 from Cleveland. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Ladies of the Elks and Sandspur Riding Club, all in New Smyrna Beach. Mrs. Hall enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Donald "Nookie"; two daughters, Donna Shinner and Linda Espy, both of Edgewater; and two grandsons. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Harry Hardy

SEPT. 14, 1930 -- AUG. 5, 2004

ASTOR -- Harry Dillard Hardy, 73, of West Highway 40, who, with his wife, owned and operated the Astora Motel for the past 18 years, died Thursday at home.

Mr. Hardy, an Army and Navy veteran, was born in Bassett, Va., and moved here in 1986 from Myrtle Beach, S.C. He also owned and operated the Tangerine Motel in Crescent City from 1978 to 2001. An avid car collector, he owned 63 1940 Ford automobiles during his life. Mr. Hardy was a member of Chicora Antique Car Club, Myrtle Beach, and enjoyed stock car racing and the New York Yankees.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Cretty; a son, Wayne, DeLand; a daughter, Dee Gay, Pierson; a sister, Shirley Holcomb, Snydorsville, Va.; and five grandchildren. Clayton Frank & Biggs Funeral Home, Crescent City, is in charge.

Hugh Harmon

AUG. 4, 1936 -- JULY 31, 2004

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Hugh Roger Harmon, 67, of Florida Boulevard, a retired computer analyst, died July 31 at home.

Mr. Harmon, a 20-year Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War, was born in Falcon, Ky. He moved to this area from Kentucky in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Roger, Nebraska; a daughter, Lori Danford, Colorado; a sister, Lucille Ratliff, Kentucky; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Alavon Direct Cremation is in charge.

Dorothy Hendrick

FEB. 9, 1913 -- AUG. 6, 2004

PORT ORANGE -- Dorothy Mae Hendrick, 91, a retired school teacher, died Friday at Hospice Care Center.

Mrs. Hendrick, a member of Port Orange Church of Christ, was born in Victoria, Ill., and moved hereinm 1986 from Galesburg, Ill.

Survivors include a brother, Ivan Welch, Gamaliel, Ark. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia - Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Lohman-Daytona, Daytona Beach, is in charge.
